calc.org Updates, Heads Roll
Posted by Nick & Eric on 10 February 2001, 08:41 GMT

In a surprising twist of fate for all those involved, calc.org (formerly Dimension-TI) decided to actually update today, according to sources close to the calc.org administrators.

"When we actually realized that one could 'update,' or overwrite older files with newer, more complete versions, we went to work at trying to 'update' the site as much as possible," reports calc.org founder and editor-in-chief, Adam Berlinsky-Schinesteinbergiel. "We proceeded to 'update' all of the pages on our site, and finally we're all done. More or less, anyway. We're still trying to figure out how to 'update' that programs section of ours."

Prior to this calc.org "updating," no current members of the site had done any work whatsoever, instead using calc.org as a springboard for other more interesting jobs (*cough*, see Eric's profile). Comments a current calc.org staff member: "There's still a Dim-TI? I thought it died in the last round of dot-com layoffs."

Former ticalc.org editor Nick Disabato was unavailable for comment at the time, as he was reportedly last seen holding a half-empty glass bottle in a paper bag in an obscure alley on Lower Wacker Drive. When questioned, he threw the bottle at reporters, saying to "get off [his] porch."

As usual, our Security Chief did absolutely nothing to mark the occasion. "Crazy Americans," reports the hardcore Swede.

I'm not sure, but I think they got purchased by somebody (go figure, purchasing a free site) and some new site's gonna come up or something.

Out of all my friends, only one of them used to use the TI-files on a regular basis. their files were badly arranged and their archives were not very complete. The last time I saw them was when Nick D. pulled off his gag where there was a picture of the atomic bomb explosion and a text that said that he had taken over.

Yeah, they claimed to have the biggest archive but they didn't and they had 10 copies of every program.

When was that? It's not in the news archives, and I can't find that picture.

However, click the link above. ;-)

Hey...that was MY idea! It could actually be done, although you'd want to build an AC adapter for your calculator, and override the auto-shutdown routine, and find a way to have it automatically upload/download packets to and from your PC, and... bah! Forget it.

Has anybody else noticed that calc.org has expanded to the hp series. But I doubt that any self respecting hp programmer would upload to calc.org.

Yup, noticed that one. That went into the news item I posted on my site, too. I doubt that calc.org will ever really compete with hpcalc.org for any HP stuff, but at least it's a good gesture on calc.org's part towards HP users.

Now the real question remains..

Will calc.org support all three major graphic calculators by supporting the Casios in time?

Although I really like some of the Casio calcs (I own a CFX-9850g and learned how to program a lot of stuff in BASIC), the major hinderance I found was the huge expense of the computer link cables for it. The link software is free, but the cable costs somewhere around $50, or probably much more. The card I got with my calc quoted a $99(!!!) price for the cable. The general lack of popularity of the Casio calcs will probably also keep them off sites like calc.org. Remember, both the HPs and TIs can be programmed in assembly language, have relatively cheap link cables available, and have a lot of support in general from a lot of users. No other calcs have that. About the only thing that my Casio has an advantage in is statistics and sometimes speed of calculation.

A few people have suggested this, some joking, others quite serious. It is our goal to support major graphing calculators. When we decided this, we considered the "major" graphing calculators to be from TI and HP. But it is not out of the question - if there is a demand for such support, we will look into it.

Actually, although I do not own an HP calc (yet), I believe that this is a good thing. I mean, their domain _is_ calc.org. The domain does not specify what type or brand of calc they cover. To conclude, there is nothing wrong with them venturing out into HP territory, and if brings them a greater user base.

The site name was probably changed because of that letter they got from ti.

And I am not saying that there is anything wrong with having hp files. Most HP users would view calc.org as a kiddie site.

Anyways, calc.org is trying to go up against hpcalc.org the established and respected hp archive site and if history shows us anything, like when they tried to go against ticalc.org for archives they will loose.

Ticalc had about a year head start on calc.org, runs the assembly mailing lists, and the staff members were directly involved with the developement of zshell and fargo -the origional assembly platforms.

hpcalc has been around since 1997 so they have a four year head start on calc.org

Hpcalc.org is nothing as complete as ticalc or calc.org. They merely have file archives and sell their archive CD. That's all they actually do. They don't support programming contests, supportive hardware or any of the stuff that the top two TI fan sites offer.

Top *TWO*? Since when? calc.org just went kaput [dgi db went dead?], and ti-files hasn't existed for as long as I can remember. ticalc.org seems to be dominating the entire TI scene!!!

Maybe it's because they're the only ones that still update and manage their site...

I'll bet that that section of their site will die eventualy. Most HP users are engineers or in college (barring a few freaks like me) and most TI users are in high school (calc.org's primary users). Plus, nobody wants to take the time to learn RPN or RPL.
