News System Updates
Posted by Magnus on 23 July 2000, 19:03 GMT
We have updated our news system with a bunch of new features. Most of the changes are "under the hood" and invisible to the user, but they should contribute to faster response times if nothing else. The most visible change is that the comment pages are split into parts when they grow large, to provide for shorter load times. Each page will link to previous and next page for navigation between the different parts.
For those linking to articles from other sites, the news article directories are now hashed, so the URL template for articles have changed. Links to our old articles will continue to work with the old address format for backwards compatibiltiy, but new articles will be in the new format.
Please answer the current survey and let us know what you think about the new format. Update (Nick): On Tuesday, I'm going to be gone for surgery. Yes, it's bad. No, it's not a life or death situation. Yes, I could probably live with it up to a certain point. No, I don't mind this happening. Yes, I'm used to having surgery. No, I shouldn't be gone long. The point: I won't be able to answer emails, AIM, ICQ, whatever - and updating this, that, and the other will be pretty much nonexistent - until I get better. It could take anywhere from three days to a week. I don't need a billion emails and/or comments and/or AIM messages telling me to get well soon, or any of that: it's really not that bad. Don't worry. :)

I don't mind the 5 minute download... if i could start seeing the top of the messages before waiting for the bottom messages.
Is the split done in the tables on a single page?
or broken into multiple pages.
anyway, another option for letting us read your news quickly would be to specify cell widths and heights.. along with the table.
The problem lies with tables, mainly, then the size.

You need to be able to jump to any specific page.
You also need a way to show all the comments.

Hey, I found something wrong w/ the Next Page thing. In the 89 Games PUD's, it doesn't work!
I wanted to update what I was doing on my Gundam Wing RPG for the 89, but I can't! A demo should be out in the week. Thanks!

I sure hope this fixes the bad law when seing the huge pages (Like the stats page). It wouldn't mater if you had a 1Meg modem or a 56K, that page was extremelly slow to load and would hang Netscape for a little while until it was able to display it all.

It always pains me to see an ignore TI user, much less a ticalc.org user. In case you havn't noticed, IE is a piece of crap, which does not render HTML properly, does not let you know in a timely fashion if you have coded something wrong, and all those *feature* Mr. Bill has been talking about are really new bugs that won't exactly work correctly, and will most likley crash you computer soon enough. I happen to run Netscape and/or Mozilla on linux on my computer, and you know what, I don't/can't crash it. BTW, you DO know how much hard drive space IE eats away from your drive right?

The reason that IE loads faster is that you are most likely using Windoze 98/98se, which has MSIE built in, making it load faster because it is integrated into the OS. Netscape is an enemy of Micro$loth, so Windoze will naturally do all it can to slow down Netscape. Also, AOL and Netscape don't get along very well, although AOL owns Netscape. For some reason, MSIE comes with AOL, despite this. I personally prefer Netscape, but my parents won't get rid of AOL, so I'm stuck using MSIE.

dude,
why do you insist on making this site your own personal news venue? I don't really care to know "what's new in Nick's life" when I scan the main page for updates. And I say this out of all respect; I think you do a great job keeping the news updated and such; I also happen to think you're a pretty cool guy. But again, as I ranted previously, I think you personalize this thing *way* too much. Couldn't you have left the "no calls, pages, or e-mails" notice on your personal site? Perhaps I'm being an anal-retentive bastard (and I'm sure there are those who won't hesitate to tell me so).. I like the flair you add to the news, just not all the "what's new in my life today" bits you tend to throw in there rather liberally.

Well, I had the option of dedicating an entire news item to this, and I didn't. I think that this entire thread is offtopic imo... but it's really my fault that I bothered to post this in the first place.
See, a big news item is getting put out tomorrow, and I won't be around to see it being posted or anything. Also, there could be other programs released that I don't know about. I do think I have a responsibility to the users of this site to notify them of a leave of absence. I don't know if I shouldn't have posted about my surgery, but usually many people get worried when one mentions that word and you get "good luck" and "hope it goes well" and all that. I don't need that, because hopefully this won't be that bad a leave of absence.
But I'll still be gone. People on AIM, ICQ and IRC will wonder where I am. This explains it.
Sorry if I irked you, and I didn't mean to make my previous comment sound like a flame.
