News System Updates
Posted by Magnus on 23 July 2000, 19:03 GMT

We have updated our news system with a bunch of new features. Most of the changes are "under the hood" and invisible to the user, but they should contribute to faster response times if nothing else. The most visible change is that the comment pages are split into parts when they grow large, to provide for shorter load times. Each page will link to previous and next page for navigation between the different parts.

For those linking to articles from other sites, the news article directories are now hashed, so the URL template for articles have changed. Links to our old articles will continue to work with the old address format for backwards compatibiltiy, but new articles will be in the new format.

Please answer the current survey and let us know what you think about the new format.

Update (Nick): On Tuesday, I'm going to be gone for surgery. Yes, it's bad. No, it's not a life or death situation. Yes, I could probably live with it up to a certain point. No, I don't mind this happening. Yes, I'm used to having surgery. No, I shouldn't be gone long. The point: I won't be able to answer emails, AIM, ICQ, whatever - and updating this, that, and the other will be pretty much nonexistent - until I get better. It could take anywhere from three days to a week. I don't need a billion emails and/or comments and/or AIM messages telling me to get well soon, or any of that: it's really not that bad. Don't worry. :)

This is completely and totally, without a doubt, super-terrific delicious stuff. Unfortunately, it comes less than a month before I go to college and get a decent internet connection there. I'm coming for you Nick, and your little toy too... aaahhahahahahahaaa

For us to vote, we have to see en example of this new system.
But, this is a good idea, as some of the larger survays WILL crash netscape, if loaded. (I think that the limit is 1 meg.)
But, possibly could this be a preference? You could select wether to split, and after how many messages/kilobytes.

Read the article prior to this one, if you have fake news turned off. It gives a rather fine example.

I agree. I often download the whole page to read the comments offline.

Now you have to download 25 pages instead of one.

Don't go KB/MB, go number of comments (and replies), so you don't have to flip pages back and forth to read a reply two miles down the page.

that is a good idea, and something like that could probably be worked out, like a preference to break at the end of all replies, but some threads can get huge.

This is exactly how it is done. It breaks after a maximum number of comments, and it only breaks at "top level". Size is never considered when chosing where to split.

It has been fixed now, sorry for the long delay.

PROBLEM!!!

PROBLEM!!!
When you post on, say, page 73 of an article, it says that it'll appear within 5 minutes, and then takes you back to page 1. Maybe you could use a hidden input field with the page number and a javascript function that made a dynamic link back to the page you were looking at before.

Whenever I post a comment, I always open the reply link in a new window, so I don't have to scroll back to where I was before. That's how I browse most of the time, actually. Though, I prefer to choose when to have a window pop-up, I do find automatic pop-ups annoying!

Is it just me, or has ticalc.org recently added a page and a half of crap to the comment posting page? I remember when it was just a few lines long...

They should do it like search engines do:

Previous 1 2 3 4 5 6 Next

(The info above says I can't use HTML tags, but they would help in demonstrating this)

My wisdom teeth happeneed last year. That was *real* fun. I posted an update on nickd.org recently that quoted an update I posted last year afterward... it involves some dirty language so I'm not quoting it here :)

This year's surgery involves my nose (bet you saw THAT one coming). The septum, the bone that separates your two nostriles (actually, it's a thin layer of bone and cartilage), is kinda, erm, bent towards my right nostril hardcore. It's also bent a little further up my airway, thus causing a lot of swelling and other bad things with my sinuses and lungs. Essentially, the doctor (THANK YOU DR. LERRICK! YOU ROCK MY SUBURBIAN WORLD) is going to break my nose, then put it back the way it's supposed to be. It's done purely for functional purposes, so I can, like, breathe again. :)

Like I said before - THIS IS NOT BAD SURGERY, IT IS PERFECTLY ROUTINE, ONE OUT OF SIX PEOPLE HAS THIS. It's just gotten bad enough with me that it needs to be corrected.

Hmmmm.... I'm a freak of nature! :) I was born without any wisdom teeth, grew up without any, and there just isn't anything there for those dentists to pull. It seemingly runs in my family...

Yeah, my dad is like that. I have yet to figure out if I have wisdom teeth or not, but I think I do. My cousin has Kitty Corners wisdom teeth,(one on top, one on bottom, opposite each other).

True, but 'nostriles' sounds much more 'sophisticated.' :-D

Or 'eccentric.' Take your pick. :-P

a friend of mine got that surgery. He was saying the same stuff, it's no big deal, etc., and then he had an allergic reaction to the anesthetic and went into a coma for two days.

I wrote about that on nickd.org's most recent update, you can enjoy my hilarious anecdote.

Hope it doesn't fry my brain. I'd take death over losing my intelligence, quite frankly.

Wisdom teeth? That's nothing!

a year ago, I had to undergo oral surgery (awake) when I had an impacted tooth, and
next year, I am going to have more oral surgery (this time asleep) to correct my bite. They are going to cut my lower jaw bone away from the skull and reattach it 4 millimeters ahead. At that time, I will be wired shut, and not be able to talk for about 1 - 1 1/2 months.

hey man I had the same thing that you had. Nothing like sitting in the dentists chair for and hour and a half, scrape scrape, drill drill, and than pull pull and than stitch, stich. It all sucks, during the surgery the doctor had run out of tubing and he had to send out his assistant to fetch some fromhe next door office. It took her fifteen minutesm while i was in the chair. Now my molars will never grow in corretly due to the infection that I got.......I feel your pain!

A few years ago i had seven teeth pulled, a year after that i had two teeth pulled, and a month ago i had to get one tooth pulled so i thought that was nothing. However, the tooth was embedded in the jaw bone and the dentist had to drill it apart and take it out in pieces. A tooth on my upper jaw was too far up, so he drilled through the gum, attached a small chain and will gradually bring it down over the next six months. Thank god for novicane!
