Underwater Calculators?
Posted by Nick on 4 July 2000, 19:48 GMT

I have absolutely no idea what value this would actually have in the consumer marketplace, but it looks like an underwater calculator has been developed by Roberto Guerra. I'd love to see someone try this with an old piece of junk, like an 81 or a 92 :) I heard a little about electrically inert substances such as 3M's Fluorinert from Slashdot a few days back... a good link exists on the subject, as does information on the Cray 2, which used Fluorinert to cool it.

The downside to Fluorinert? It's $500 a gallon. Dang.

There have been underwater laptops for years now. In fact you can take a standard laptop running Micro$oft WinDoze 2000 and it will work as well underwater as well as it will out.

I should probably add that no special hardware is required - you just need the usual 2 Gigs of RAM, a 700MHz Pentium III and 100 Gigs of hard disk space.

He he. That depends on how much you overclock it, doesn't it? I've seen a ti80 running at ~6GHz. OK, it blew up (literally) after a few seconds (I'm surprised it lasted that long) but still... Looking at it the other way, anyone not using a real operating system (see also: Linux, Red Hat, Zoot, KDE) has turned their laptop into a calculator.

When did KDE become an operating system? :)

If you really want to be correct:

Linux isn't an OS, it's a kernel
Redhat isn't an OS, it's a GNU/Linux distribution

And as for Zoot, I haven't the foggiest of clues as
to what *that* is.

Zoot is a build of Red Hat.

I am sorry, you can not burn your processor by overcloking it. It just looses the frequency and stop. Let get cooler and change the crystal frequency to a normal one.
If you have done it properly, your calculator should start again.

Some chips will die if you put too high frequencies through them. One of the old 68k chips had an undocumented opcode that would toggle all the I/O pins on and off as fast as possible. You could melt the insulation on the wires inside old Macs doing this...

The calc definitely doesn't work now. The screen has a huge black mark behind it and a load of resistors, capacitors and so on look extremely sorry for themselves.

Is anyone daring/stupid enough to test that undocumented opcode on an 89/92/92+? Personally, I would recommend testing on an old 92 if someone has an almost dead one around.
