Underwater Calculators?
Posted by Nick on 4 July 2000, 19:48 GMT

I have absolutely no idea what value this would actually have in the consumer marketplace, but it looks like an underwater calculator has been developed by Roberto Guerra. I'd love to see someone try this with an old piece of junk, like an 81 or a 92 :) I heard a little about electrically inert substances such as 3M's Fluorinert from Slashdot a few days back... a good link exists on the subject, as does information on the Cray 2, which used Fluorinert to cool it.

The downside to Fluorinert? It's $500 a gallon. Dang.

Such a hassle!

Why not just put the calculator in a Ziploc--I mean a non-brand-specific resealable clear plastic bag? Why go to all the trouble of oil and Saran--I mean generic brand-X clear plastic wrap?

Well...Maybe not a Ziplock, but a large underwater cellphone bag. The Ziplock is toi easy to open and too easy to rip. :)

Wouldn't it be kind of hard to press the buttons through a Zip-Loc bag?

Pressing the buttons wouldn't be much of a problem. I've tried it myself... Okay, I admit you get a little clumsy programming assembley snorkeling like I did. :) I had to trash the program in the end because it was all full of nasty, irrepearable bugs and glitches. :( Ooops...

Use a shrinkwrap machine.

Here is the explanation for not using plastic bags or shrink-wrapping it, quoted from Roberto's page (hope you don't mind, Roberto)

"Why oil? As my theory goes, an air filled shrinwrapped calc would seep in some water because of the high manometric pressure of water. An isolating liquid is needed inside, and oil is the material of choice to isolate and cool the windings of HV transformers in power substations. Also, oil repels water: H2O is kept out, and oil is lighter than water: it MAY make your calculator float. "

When shrink-wrapping, you're supposed to use a hot-air gun to make the plastic to stick to the object, thus leaving no room for mention of pressure.

A safer way is to NOT use use calculator underwater.

Underwater calculators?! Hell Yeah!! Just think of the possibilities. Underwater calculator gaming. You could play in the shower, play in a pool, or even when washing dishes.
This would be great for all the nerds in here who might actually decide to go out this summer like to the beach or a swimming pool but just can't get away from their calculators.
Underwater programming. Wow, the possibilites.

True, but what do you really need that for when you're underwater? Oh, wait... Underwater link play!! Hell Yeah! This problem must be fixed.

Why not some sort of sonar link? it wouldn't be too different from the IRlink, just with an underwater mic and speaker rather then the IR LED and photo-diode.

I'm building mass quantities od IR links now, so maybe I could try to incorperate a waterproof unit into my design plans. When I build it, I'll test it to see in the infared rays make it to the other unit and if the thing will even work at all.

It is enough to be water resistant. I had digital translator with 26 languages and I carried it whenever I had trips in Europe.

One night the rain entered my tend, the translator became wet and LCD ceased to work. Of course, the same model is not longer available.

think of the possibilities of underwater palmtops. those tiny little things are so much less bulky (correct usage?) than laptops. easier to record info and do calculations if you're a diver or what not. =)

how about- size of bait*number of sharks = probability that this will be you last dive. but really could there really be a use for underwater handhelds. hey if the diver gets bored bring the freaking game boy down with ya' (air permitting)

Is this message board broken or something? I posted a comment 30 minutes ago and it hasn't come up yet.

i think it is because last time i looked there were fifty something programs and now there is only thirty (maybe it was my fault) but i think it is. why are news/new files updates so rare now its like on every two days. o well keep up the good work TI-Calc!!!

news updates would likely lag because:

a. ticalc.org staff may be on vacation part of the time
b. less otherwise wasted time to program (slow/repetitive math classes)
c. programmers have other interests during the summer
