MaxMem, TurboBreakOut, SolarStriker, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree
Posted by Nick on 26 June 2000, 03:09 GMT

Many apologies for the total lack of news items lately: many things in meatspace took place the past week, ranging from the occasional bowling outage (oh, by the way, I got a 199) to a visitation from Mike "I Came To Chicago Just So I Could Say I Typed On Heatfactory" Knapp (of former #ti fame).

With that Update From Nick Disabato's Personal Life(TM) out of the way, here's "Der Neusposten:"

Julien Muchembled, I KISS YOU!!! Looks like the crafty little guy released a version of Maxmem for the 89 and the 92 Plus that works on AMS v2.04. Check it out if you enjoy procuring such fine games that happen to be obnoxiously oversized.

Flavien Racine decided, one fine summer day, to release TurboBreakOut 68K v1.80 onto an unsuspecting world. New features include French documentation, an enhanced appearance, bugfixes, bigger (by twofold) levels, a new backwards-compatible level format, and one extra set of external levels. Want it? I know I'd be drooling right now: to this end, 89, 92 (Fargo ][), and 92 Plus have been lovingly, painstakingly prepared for your consumption.

Benoit Scherrer and Brian Tribondeau have released this program - I think it's called "SolarStriker" - 89, 92 (Fargo Deux), and 92 Plus versions exist for you to "madly leechx0r." Rumor has it that this is the last (hence the word "Final") version to be created, unless something goes seriously hardcore horrorshow awry. *sob* Their programming talents will be missed.

I was wondering why the news and prgms weren't being updated. Why aren't there any memory adders for the TI-83+? Is it possible to make one?

Normally, TI-OS blocks users of old TI-89s from using half of their archive memory. MaxMem allows users of old TI-89s to use all of the archive memory they currently have. I don't think there is any "extra" unused archive memory like that on the TI-83+, so you couldn't make a version of MaxMem for the TI-83+. You couldn't even make a version for Hardware 2 TI-89s, because you can already use all of the archive memory on those.
P.S. I'm still wondering why the programs aren't being updated. Surely more has been uploaded to ticalc.org in the past week or so than has been posted! I know my program hasn't been posted yet.

Why are they stopping programming on Solar Striker? Is it because they are done or because they don't want to work on it anymore?

They might decide to make a new version like DoorsOS. Remember DoorsOS 0.96 "Final Edition"? We thought that was the end of DoorsOS, but then we hear "DoorsOS 0.97 Prelease" from Xavior. So, maybe it wont be the end of Solar Striker.

Don't worry. TI's little goof-ups have a way of encouraging program development. It's commonly known as an AMS "upgrade" :)

Because the authors finished the game, that means to get a game as near as the gameboy game version.

Oh my god, now we all know where Nick's kisses go...

Just kidding. But there's that German again, built right into the article. And it's not even readable. I actually had to translate it back to English in my head to find out what you meant.

Putting it right is pretty hard, too. "News," for one thing, can be translated to "Nachrichten." "Post," well, that I find hard to translate. My suggestion is to either leave it away and write "Here are 'Die Nachrichten'." Or you can use Genglish or whatever you want to call it and write "Here is 'Das Nachrichten-Update'." Perfectly legal, too. Next time I'll just leave it. Do whatever you want.

And you probably know I'm just fulfilling my role at this site. So you also know I don't want to insult you. :-)

Better luck next time, I say.

Actually, "der neusposten" is a reference to the gaming humor web site Penny Arcade.

Oh, OK. But how was I supposed to know that? I mean, I kind of thought that you probably did it on purpose. But I thought you just ran it through Babel Fish or something, and that's what came out. I tried that just now, and it wasn't far off: "Der Nachrichtn Pfosten"
The news pole, huh? :-)

Nah :) Babelfish is notoriously unreliable, and if I wanted to create an exact translation I would _so not ever use that piece of garbage_ :)

Anyway, this proves to you, I, and the rest of us all that you should be reading Penny Arcade much more often than you do.

GO! :)

(Stupid regexp's, I haven't used them before, so I hope I am interpreting this correctly...)

Ah, wrong again! "This proves to me..." is correct since you shouldn't be using the reflexive form. It _is_ proper, however, to say "I prove to myself..."

Come on, Nick! Even I knew that.

But I did make a spelling mistake. It's supposed to say "Nachrichten." Sorry. :-)

It's for HW1 only, which have a silly restricTIon on usable archive memory. So it won't let you...
