Tanks v0.53, PANG v1.01, SolarStriker v1.00 Pre-Final
Posted by Nick on 29 May 2000, 02:39 GMT

Tanks v0.53As usual, there have been a plethora of new releases of nectareous things this weekend, so I'll be covering a lot in this one:

Tanks v0.53, by Andy Dufilie, is a game like (duh) Scorched Earth, Worms, or the classic Tanks. There's not much else to say about this one except a job well done - the graphics are great (see screenshot) and it looked essentially bug-free when I tried it out.

A new TSE Compiler for the TI-83/TI-83 Plus shell has been released by Alex Roper. It features a setup program, multiple windows, a .chm help file, and the obligatory bug fixes.

Loving it! Combes "eXor" Bertrand has released PANG v1.01 for the 89 and the 92 Plus. Thanks to the ever-so-friendly Babelfish, you now know that new features include bugfixes on the display and the keyboard. A new version is in the works that keeps the balls inside the 89's viewing display.

Everybody's favorite game, SolarStriker v1.00 Pre-Final (for the 89, 92 [Fargo II], and 92 Plus), has been unleashed. Authored by Benoit Scherrer and Brian Tribondeau, new features for this piece of entertainment include much code optimization and (I think) link play (my French isn't very good *g*). Also, a source code release has taken place.

Many other great things have been released in the past two days. You can check the latest updates list for more information.

It is a compiler for a shell for the 83+. There were a lot of games for it coming out in a few weeks time, but since people didn't like it right away, the creater of TSE sort of gave up.

Oh, the 86 people didn't know about that, but now they do. I believe that ASM isn't built into those calcs so that they have to use special shells.

P.S. Tell me if I'm wrong.

It is, but you have to write it in naitive hex.
eg:

AsmPrgm
215087EF7A41215000EF3943C9

(Will create program with name starting at 8751h)

No. Binary is fine too, unlike the 83.

The 83 allows programs to be stored in hexadecimal
The 83+ allows programs to be stored in hexadecimal and in binary (written off-calc)
In both cases the memory managment is inefficent and shells fix this problem.

OFFCALC! You see, hex is writeable on calc, then you can run it OR compile it. I've written MirageOS programs completly on-calc. (Crappy ones, but still :)

It wasn't that people didn't like so much as there seemed to be a general concensus among programmers that it was a bad idea. When ION v1.5 came out, there was suddenly very little advantage to using TSE. I have other projects to persue now...

Robin has since resigned from the TI-83+ and all calc programming to program a 'proper platform'.

I feel good....i started the 2 cence thing a long time ago, Tanks is my favorite game right now! I play it against people in my class all the time, some times lasting the whole period with out one round ending. This is why I plea for a Teacher Key! Or a save game feature, this way I can continue games whenever Im interupted by the bell. Doesnt matter if you can or not, I dont care, it is and will be a great game! Good job!

I know what you're talking about. In 1193, there was a Qbasic game calles Bannanas, I think. There were two gorillas throwing bannanas at each other at calculated angles and power, like Tanks. But Tanks has different weapons and is much better. Besides how many "Gorilla" games are there for the TI-89? =)

Whooooops! Well, that's what happens when you type with one hand while doing homework with the other! =) It's supposed to be 1993. There was a Qbasic game called bannanas, or something like that. It's like Tanks, only you throw bannanas at each other at different angles/powers. Sorry about the *confusion*.

I think the game was called "Gorillas." QBasic only compiled the files into memory, so you needed it to run it. It was basically a demo, not a real program.

The game is caled "QBasic Gorillas". I love that game and have been playing it since the 5th grade. It's made by Microsoft, and I stil have an original copy. And it isn't compiled. It's just multiple files inside a file to make a basic game, like the TIOS's basic on the 83 and 83+.

Actually, as far as I know, it's simply one large text file. QBasic just has a dialog to switch between all the subroutines, which makes it appear like a multi-file project. I liked QBasic a lot when I was younger, especially the way it put every BASIC command into uppercase. It also formatted every identifier exactly like its definition, so that you didn't have to use the shift key at all most of the time. Oh, those good old times...

QBASIC was the best! It had the best indexed help file ever created, and it was simple and fast to use. I programmed Tetris in it once. It was great for learning how to program.
