Patrick Releases Phoenix v6.0
Posted by Nick on 19 May 2000, 02:36 GMT
The delicious Patrick Davidson has released Phoenix v6.0. This was in the "experimental" phase for a few days but now it's in the form of a final release. *MANY* bug fixes and cosmetic game changes come in this version, so you'll definitely want to download it for your respective calculator. Good work on Patrick's part for clearing up all the bugs and such. I don't even notice any of them when I play, so it just looks like an already-good thing has been made better. Download Phoenix v6.0 for the 89, the 92, and the 92 Plus.

- Want a good server OS? Use Linux.
Why not
- Want a good OS for graphic design? Use BeOS.
Have you ever used BeOS? No applications, none. It's a neat toy, but not good for anything real. I do believe most graphic designers still use Macintosh :). The GIMP is good on UNIX. And I've heard Silicon Graphics machines are nice :)... I use one on occasion, but not for graphic design.
- Want a good, stable, overall fast and neat-o OS? Use Windows 2000 (what I have).
I suppose, but it really isn't that neat-o, and it isn't that fast, and it isn't that good :). I think you haven't had enough experience with other operating systems :)
- Have hardware that's not supported by any of the above? Enjoy frequent crashes? Don't have the budget to buy new hardware? Get Win98 :) or use win95 :)
I do believe you missed a few....
Doing a lot of programming/development/technical things?
Use UNIX
Don't want commercial software?
Use Debian Linux
Want to customzie everything every which way?
Write your own operating system... oh wait... use
Linux.
Want to have the easiest to use interface, but be subject to technical inferiority in terms of OS?
Use MacOS, but then again MacOS X will be very nice :).

One word: Realtime. Yes, no rendering- with just standard hardware. What other OS could open up a 1.3Gig Avi file and start playing it without skipping in 1 sec? Certainitly not Linux. Note machine 266 with 96meg ram.

And what would you suggest? Windows2k offers the best comprimise, runs most 98/5 applications and games, offers much better stability then win98/5, easy to setup, support for most hardware (a burdon with Linux), more control then 98/5 but nicer interface then Linux.

Lol, who says you have to have a budget? I'm running Win2k Adv Server. ;]
-Doing a lot of programming/development/technical things?

Yes Linux/Unix is a good choice for that, unless your developing for Windows (majority of developers).
-Don't want commercial software?
Use Debian Linux
Um...Ok why make your job tougher?

True you have much control over Linux like good old command promt stuff (don't get me wrong, the command prompt is usefull, just not for the average user)
Also if you call customizing making your own drivers so that your unsupported hardware works then you are right, use Linux

I personaly haven't used gnome (I've _only_ worked with KDE) but every single GUI I've seen, has tried to copy many of the similarities that win95 has. KDE has the _exact_ same display properties as win98.
-Hey! the main difference is that linux is free!!!
Lol, but you paid 30 bucks (or more) for Red Hat? For what the services? lol, Linux has its uses, but those are limited by many factors, ie. lack of certain software (Microsoft office mainly), GUI is still not near as _clean_ as windows, lacking hardware support (and a lot of hardware it can support you have to manually configure), sometimes too much control- can get overwhelming to non-techies (majority of computer users), getting to be too many versions out there- needs to be one clear Linux, one standard. That is why Linux won't ever take over for windows, because it has no clear developer- yea Linus, but one man is a little slim.

KDE is awful, it's almost windows. Give a try to gnome.
My Redhat came with a magazine, that's 5 U$S here in my country. Office? I can download StarOffice, but the best option is to get it from a CD, another 5 U$S if avaible in a magazine(very possible). They say it has same power as Microsoft Office(!!!!!).
Actually, you can consider RedHat as the standar Linux.
I think 80% of Linux users has redhat. If you want an easy to install/use linux, get the corel linux version. But SuSE linux, Caldera, Corel, Redhat are like the most importants distributions. Wait a year to get a real linux as you want. My 5 $ redhat has a lot of software, including netscape 4.7 .Entering the internet was very easy.I could open over 5 netscapes in a 5x86 133Mhz!!! and the speed didn't decrease!! I was amaze!! Delicious OS!!
HEY!!! what about those minilinux for 68k machines??
Can somenone(a programer, mainly) port that to the TI89/92+???
