Dying Eyes 86, GlassCars v1.0, GtkTiLink v2.00_2.38-stable
Posted by Nick on 2 May 2000, 23:50 GMT

Glasscars v1.0Approximately three newsworthy items for you to consume this afternoon:

I love Dying Eyes. It's one of the best roleplaying games I've seen on any calculator.
I also, as many of you already know, love the 86 because it doesn't have any of that FLASH garbage that muddles things up so much for calc developers.
To this end, I was rather pleased (read: euphoric) to see that Alex Highsmith's famous game had been ported to the 86 by Andreas Finne and Sam Heald.
Download this. Now. Several times.
GO!

When you get back, let me tell you a little something about the graphics-light (see screenshot) Glasscars v1.0. Made by the previously unknown (there seems to be a lot of those "previously unknown" folk around recently) Matthew Roberts, this game for the 83 is a racing sim in 3-D. Featuring hills and such, this (demo) looks very promising as far as coding skills go. Download copies of this for Ion for the 83 and the 83 Plus.

There's a little program I like to call GtkTiLink and it looks like it's finally reached version two point oh oh. It supports all calculators and all currently available links. Download the old-school version for Unix or the new-school version for Windows - the latter version will require DLL's and additional files.

Yeah, i have to admit that the glasscar engine was nice. but, i wonder how the game would be if the author spiced up the graphics a little.

anyways, is GtkTIlink a good program for transfering files? since I already use WinTran from Sami Khawam

Well, GtkTiLink sorta supports the 83+ - it says 'maybe' next to the calculator chooser by 83+.

All I know is that GtkTILink crashes whenever I select TI83+, Black Link, and COM1. I use Win98, too..that maybe it (haven't tried it in Linux yet).

The TI83+ calc is not supported yet by GtkTiLink.

Unix is old school?
Matthew Sullivan

... compared to windows, most *ix are light years ahead. Windows 9x is still largely a 16 bit OS. NT/2k doesn't even support 64 bit cpus like ultasparc or alpha. Unix is the way of the future my friends.

GtkTiLink was initially released for Unix/Linux, then a Windows port was made later on.

Sorry for the confusion :)

What's interesting is that NT4 does run on alpha, but like win3.1, it was a 16 bit OS controlling a 32 bit cpu (32 bit OS on a 64 bit cpu) which negated almost all of the benefits of the CPU!

NT DOES run on Alphas. Okay, it's not really 64-bit, but neither is Linux.

Flash is not garbage!
Beta

Flash is not garbage! It prevents the need for purchasing a TI-89 Plus. Of course, it can be an obstacle for programmers, but as more people get AMS 2.0x, programmers will also switch to it, and it will become less of a problem.

Maybe... but anyway, some guy from TI e-mailed another TI user on the discussion boards that the SDK was coming out at the end of June.

What year, he didn't say... ;-)

OH I HAVE TO TELL ALL MY FRIENDS RIGHT AWAY!!

CLARIFICATION:

In fact it was not Jimmy and Stephanie C. that are rumoredly going steady, but Jimmy and Stephanie M.

Thank you.

don't mean to interrupt your important discussion, but I uploaded a program 6 days ago and it still doesn't show up. What's up with that?
(I also uploaed one 3 days ago,and I'm still waiting...

It's not the AMS that chafes me so much as the hardware. The "faults," as it would be, in the AMS; are fixable.

Hardware 2.00's grayscale problems are not.

If TI would give us the info we need about the hardware, we could use the hardware directly to refresh the screen and buffer whatever. Then there wouldn't be any flicker:(

Re: Re: Flash is not garbage!

Well, maybe sometime TI will be smart and please the programmers with a new hardware version!

Re: Re: Re: Flash is not garbage!
JaggedFlame

I REALLY doubt that another Hardware Version would please very many programmers.

Try developing programs for three hardware versions, times three rom versions, for a total of EIGHT calculators (HW2 doesn't support 1.00)!!!

3 x 3 = 8 ?????

Anyways, you can't prevent TI from making new hardware versions, and people are going to buy it, no matter what.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Flash is not garbage!
Beta

I agree with you. However, HW2 doesn't support AMS 1.00, and therefore the extremely complex equation would be 3*3-1=8.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Flash is not garbage!
JaggedFlame

Yeah, but I said that HW2 doesn't support AMS 1.00.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Flash is not garbage!
JaggedFlame

I never said I could prevent them; I merely said that it wouldn't please many programmers.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Flash is not garbage!
Beta

As I said before, the world is beginning to switch to AMS 2.0x, whether they know of the "dangers" or not. In time, the same thing will happen to "HW3". At first, some people (like me) were afraid to get Windows 98 because of its bothersome bugs and glitches. However, over time, people, whether they knew of the "dangers" or not, began to switch to it. Some of the bugs in the first edition were fixed and it became the new standards of PC's. The same thing could happen to "HW3". Who knows?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Flash is not garbage!
JaggedFlame

I agree, but if you were a programmer who programmed for all audiences, and Windows 95/98/NT/Me/2000 were significantly different, would you really want to make a program for all systems, or just, say, 2?

     4 May 2000, 03:22 GMT

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Flash is not garbage!
Beta

Sure, but life as a programmer is *tough* and sometimes you have to make sacrifices. It's a mess already with about 10 TI calculators and about 5 (or more, I don't feel like counting for no good reason) different formats.
