Harper Maddox Releases Punchout! Demo
Posted by Nick on 25 April 2000, 23:29 GMT

Punchout! DemoHarper Maddox of The Void Productions has created a demo of his upcoming game, Punchout!, for the 83 on SOS. This is one of the better games I've seen for the 83/83+ calculators in a while. If you're unfamiliar with the greatness of Nintendo The Elder's games, Punchout! was a boxing game where you tried to (surprise surprise) knock out your opponent. Strict adherance to the old game's controls, graphics, and opponents has made the on-calc version just as addictive. Try it out!

Also, if you are attending Science Olympiad's state tournament in Illinois this Friday and Saturday, email me post-haste.

Update (Steve): Sam Heald ported Punchout! to the TI-82. You can get it here.

Update's Revenge (Nick): Sam has once again ported Punchout! to the 83 and the 83+ for Ion. Grab these if you've got the itching to.

Wow! What a great game. A game that finally makes me jealous of the 83. I had to steal my friends for awhile so I could play it. Great job Harper, keep up the good work, I might have to save up for an 83 now.

Im a ti-89 user and i think that 83 people should have a chance at good games. so dont think of the stereotype that ti-89 users are spoiled brats and that want every game for their calculators and this stereotype may offend ti-89 users,
Peace man, no discrimination :)
We should be happy with what we have.

anybody who uses the word "hick" is not one. If you live in the deep south, like I do, "redneck" is the only word to use when dealing with such "folks".

Not true. I live in the deep south and I commonly refer to the imbreeding, sheep loving, pervert farmers as hicks. Your comment is not true for all southerners.

Remember the usage of "Your"... not "You're." Just my two cents... :-)

Well I WOULD be going to Science Olympiad State, but for one minor detail - we don't HAVE a Science Olympiad team (at least that I know of)... although i'm going to some state math thing this friday...

Unlike Science Olympiad, however, I will _not_ be at said math thing.

Though I would certainly like to be... :)

Are you sure that isn't Saturday? I'm going to a state math contest on Saturday at ISU. What school are you from?

BTW, Macomb is sweeping the precalc team event!

Well, we're leaving Friday morning for ISU, but yeah, Saturday... I'm from Stevenson High School. Where is Macomb anyway?

Macomb is the home of Western Illinois University. We're in the smaller division, how about you? We're also the team that took home a lot of awards; I personally got first in precalc individual, team, calculator team, and 2 person team. We got 5th overall.

I have my TI 89 and a lot of the programs on this site to thank for helping me with that.

Are the graphics compressed?

not in this version.

but in the final version the sprites are going to be ZCP compressed. However that does not mean that all of the graphics are going to be compressed, because of the speed loss.

If the demo is on 16 K.
Is it possible to do a full version to 83 ?

the graphics for each enemy take up somewhere around 4k uncompressed, and i guess 3k uncompressed... so yes it is definitely possible to have 4 new enemies.
