Phoenix v5.0
Posted by Nick on 18 April 2000, 23:36 GMT
Patrick Davidson has released version 5.0 of his now-classic game for 68K calcs, Phoenix. Some of the new features include random bugfixes, extensive internal documentation, many new comments in the code, slightly improved guided bullets from enemies and some optimizations in the code. Download this delectable new version for the 89, the 92 and the 92 Plus. Update (Nick): Patrick has updated Phoenix v5.1 to fix a lot of the bugs he inadvertently created in the old version. Apologies for any problems this might have caused. The links are the same as above, so just keep on clicking those.
On an unrelated note, I'm looking for an IDE hard drive of at least 2 gigabytes in size that you wouldn't have any qualms with never seeing again. If you have said hard drive and you would like me to take it off your hands, please contact me. Thanks! *g* Update II (Nick): Patrick has updated Phoenix (AGAIN!) to v5.2. This version keeps the user from buying more extra shields than they have, wraps the shields left to each side of the screen, and some other random bugfixes.

The Super Weapon Button

Dangit, I find it quite annoying how the "super weapon" button for the two new ships must be located on the 0 (space) key. It would've been better if the super weapon key was to be located on some key like the diamond key so that way you can quickly access it without having to break your fingers (ok ok it's not that serious but still...pressing 0 when you're in deep action is still somewhat a nuisance).

Phoenix 5.1 released

I've just now uploaded version 5.1 of Phoenix on my web page. It includes the following four fixes: (1) it now works in Universal OS, (2) the 2nd line of the screen is no longer corrupted on the TI-89, (3) the shop display is fixed on the TI-89, and (4) you won't die if you get a larger ship while on the bottom of the screen. Even Fargo II users have a reason to get this new version: it's 16 bytes smaller!

I can't be positive, but from extensive (okay, maybe that's a slight exageration) testing, I've come to the conclusion that it's not that the shield doesn't go down; you just don't see it. I think you have 20 hits worth of shield on the screen, and 10 off. Another thing this means is that you can buy back those 10 extra shields, but you can't be sure you have them.
Why does this happen? Hmmm... looking at the numbers, it's interesting that it's a 2[on screen]:3[total] ratio. Just like the TI-89's 160 wide screen to the TI-92(+)'s 240 pixel wide screen! Also, from basic ASM experience, I know that the TI-89 has memory for the full LCD screen, even though it only uses part of it. My guess is that the author just left it using the whole 240 pixels. But *hint hint* I think that it might be nice to scale down the sheild so that the whole thing can be displayed on an 89...
