Phoenix v5.0
Posted by Nick on 18 April 2000, 23:36 GMT

Phoenix v5.0Patrick Davidson has released version 5.0 of his now-classic game for 68K calcs, Phoenix. Some of the new features include random bugfixes, extensive internal documentation, many new comments in the code, slightly improved guided bullets from enemies and some optimizations in the code. Download this delectable new version for the 89, the 92 and the 92 Plus.

Update (Nick): Patrick has updated Phoenix v5.1 to fix a lot of the bugs he inadvertently created in the old version. Apologies for any problems this might have caused. The links are the same as above, so just keep on clicking those.

On an unrelated note, I'm looking for an IDE hard drive of at least 2 gigabytes in size that you wouldn't have any qualms with never seeing again. If you have said hard drive and you would like me to take it off your hands, please contact me. Thanks! *g*

Update II (Nick): Patrick has updated Phoenix (AGAIN!) to v5.2. This version keeps the user from buying more extra shields than they have, wraps the shields left to each side of the screen, and some other random bugfixes.

You don't have first comment (boy am I getting tired of saying this - doesn't it say in the rules that you can't say first comment?)...

Wow, at least 5 people think that they got a first comment, that is funny!

One of my proposals to the staff was to have an elaborate AI script analyze comments for people who /thought/ they got first comment, but really didn't.

It would then send emails to the appropriate people with the following:

<email>
Yousuxbad!

Warmest regards,
the ticalc.org project

It was shot down :(

Form the informal Ticalc.org Comment Gestapo and have them email all who claim first post telling them how dumb they are. Then, Echelon them 'till they go away!

You know, it wouldn't take an elaborate script at all. Just a few lines of Perl or PHP.

But the problem is if somebody said "I'm tired of 'first comment posts' the program would delete the person's comment thinking that they had a first comment boast.

true, but if most people said that, would they really care that the post got deleted?

now, if they had something important to say about, say, assembly, and said "the first comment in the assembly source program on my website shows how to...", THAT would be a problem.

I wish first comment posts would be deleted; one time, though, for the Lotus 86/Teos/Bomberman news item, I put "lotus 86....sweet" as my comment, and it got deleted too :P

Well, I'm the only one who's posting time is actually tied with the time of the comment listed fist. :P

I think it'd be funny to post "first comment" comments on day-old topics, just to irritate people... But then, I have a strange sense of humor. And it violates TI-Calc policies.

(commenting on the previous version, but apparently what i'll say is still the same)

I like the game, I liked it since I saw it. But it's kind of short. Despite all the weapons you have, it's quite short. Galaxian for the 83 was a lot longer a lot funnier because of that. And more interessting graphics to. I mean, driving an M? Please... :) And the ships exit formation to atack you in galaxian, which is great, well, it's just not as repetitive as Phoenix... I'll be puting it on calc tonight, though.
And, people, neither of you got first post and we are all laughing at you, so stop it.

Play a little longer...it's not as repetitive, plus the ships *DO* exit formation to attack you, plus turn on some weird evasive action while shooting innumerable bullets at you. It's quite fun. Plus I don't see how you can compare Galaxian to this game at all. Besides the same game type, that is. You can buy stuff to upgrade your ship in this game. You ROCK Patrick Davidson!!!

Then the game would be called Galaxian , not Phoenix.
anyway, the graphics can be improved. But I was thinking in my old Atari 2600, and I remembered that phoenix was a little different. This phoenix for TI89 is a mixing of space invaders or something like that. What do you think?

well, I finally tested the game with my HW1 ams2.03 calc, I got the same bugs that other people got, but the game is great, just when the triangles come to attack me, I said "yes, it's a good game".Very fast and playable. I like it. YES, it's like phoenix, but in the Atari 2600 the graphics were diferents, not triangles, but animals, like eagles, and robots(?).
