Universal OS v1.10, Julien Muchembled Defeats HW2 Limit
Posted by Nick on 27 February 2000, 21:48 GMT

Imagine the euphoric shock I received when I got an ICQ from Francois Goldgewicht telling me that a new version of Universal OS had been released by Julien Muchembled.
Now multiply that by several googols and you have the ultimate pleasure overload that I experienced when I found out that a patch had been written by the same person to fix the 8 KB limit on assembly programs on Hardware v2.00 calculators running AMS v2.03.
That's right, folks. Now time for some documentation quoting:

If you have:
- a TI89 Hardware 2 and AMS 2.03: launch "ti89_203"
- a TI92 Plus Hardware 2 and AMS 2.03: launch "ti92p203"
The TI92 Plus version has not yet been tested. If people can confirm that it works, email me.
After that, the 8 KB limit should still be there. If you install DoorsOS II or Universal OS, though, things will be just hunky-dory.

Use this at your own risk. If you have any successes, email me. Good luck! :)

Update (Nick): Belated props to Ti.Fr for breaking this and posting the files. I've been busy with lots of real life stuff lately, so sorry for the late update, Francois :)

Hi,
I just want to point out that the address posted for the patch mentioned in the article is incorrect. You can find the actual address by clicking on (webpage) above.

Am I missing something? Didn't DoorsOS "defeat the HW2 limit" quite some time ago?

... and it also solved the HW2 problems on rom 1.05. But HW2 + rom 2.0x was still not fonctionning.

uh this is kind of irrelevant..but whoever put up the new programs, i think put TI-89 Chat 1.0 in the ti-86 basic category...

This is all good and well, but it doesn't work for the 92+ HW2 AMS2.03, so all isn't well with the world just yet...

Please check whether my "Classic text adventures V1.1" works on TI-92+ HW2 OS-2.03. I hope so, but I can't check this because I have not TI-92+...

this goes to show you that, no matter how TI tries to stop the programmers, they always find a way around it (except for the 80/81, the missing link ports tend to boggle even the best programmer :P). Therefore, TI should really stop acting like a child, stop these games, and give us what we need to program for these calculators (I hear the 92+ version of the patch doesn't work though, so they might've stopped us there). I also read on the board here at ticalc about the Bomberboy 1.0 release that the ~380k archive limit for hw1 calcs was a software limit. If that's true, then TI is really being an a$$ for trying to make us switch to hw2 calculators

Exactly. Like it said in that fake news item a while ago about the next 100 years of ticalc.org (remember that?), TI should open source all their calculators, and we'll make even more leet programs.

And I can't wait for someone to make a computer-to-calc infrared link for the 80 and 81. I'll bet you someone will. You never know, considering all the obstacles the TI programming community has leaped over.

That would involve dismantling the ti80 - it has no linkport (except the OHP version?).

Hmm... I thought the IR link plans involved dismantling the calculator the IR link was attached to! I didn't know they could plug into the link port...

Not checked, but they can probably use the linkport.

That might work for the 80 but the 81 has no linkport.

I just thought I'd mention...You know, TI doesn't do anything specifically to piss you, or anyone else off. When they do something, there is a reason (generally a pretty good one) behind it. Whether you approve of the reason is something else altogether I suppose. All I'm meaning to say is that there's no reason to take TI like its the ultimate evil trying to oppress the goodness of the programmers. Whenever I hear people talking about TI (seems to hold true with microsoft as well) they talk like TI is just some selfish child playing annoying games. It's just not true. (That doesn't mean that I don't share in your frustration however...)

Yea your right, that would be plain stupid for TI to release their source to their calcs. That would be like AOL releasing their source for young vb programmers.

Right, except no one in their right mind would ever want anything to do with AOL, including the source :)

There are a number of 'hacks' for the ti80. You can get it to display a list of every function on the calculator by doing something with L6. You can also program assembly on them using something like L1+L6->L6 (or similar...). However you are limited to very few opcodes...

would it be possible to find a loophole for assembly programs if you had the overhead model of the ti80? (note I'm not technically inclined to make a guess on whether my question is okay or really stupid)
