Universal OS v1.10, Julien Muchembled Defeats HW2 Limit
Posted by Nick on 27 February 2000, 21:48 GMT

Imagine the euphoric shock I received when I got an ICQ from Francois Goldgewicht telling me that a new version of Universal OS had been released by Julien Muchembled.
Now multiply that by several googols and you have the ultimate pleasure overload that I experienced when I found out that a patch had been written by the same person to fix the 8 KB limit on assembly programs on Hardware v2.00 calculators running AMS v2.03.
That's right, folks. Now time for some documentation quoting:

If you have:
- a TI89 Hardware 2 and AMS 2.03: launch "ti89_203"
- a TI92 Plus Hardware 2 and AMS 2.03: launch "ti92p203"
The TI92 Plus version has not yet been tested. If people can confirm that it works, email me.
After that, the 8 KB limit should still be there. If you install DoorsOS II or Universal OS, though, things will be just hunky-dory.

Use this at your own risk. If you have any successes, email me. Good luck! :)

Update (Nick): Belated props to Ti.Fr for breaking this and posting the files. I've been busy with lots of real life stuff lately, so sorry for the late update, Francois :)

"Hunky-dory"

Gee Nick, nice choice of words. :)

Oh and this is cool too... even though my 89 is HW1 and I'm never putting 2.03 on it, unless they port every game. 700k isn't worth it to me with nothing to put in it.

For hv 1.0 you don't get 700k, you don't get any more user-accesible memory. flash apps go in the space between 380-700k, so all you get is archive retention and a slightly better shell.

Let me get some things straight : I have a TI-89 hw1 (hw1 calcs do not display the hardware version in the about screen, right?) with AMS 2.03.
a) I don't get 700kb of ram, archive or otherwise?
Then why does my mem screen say Flash ROM free 720884? Do I not get to use the area from 380kb to 700kb except for flash apps?
b) What is this "software limit" on the memory? AMS 2.03 on my hw1 calc seems to be great, I can play games just fine, except for the rare crash.
c) What is with the archived RAM buisness? I have a chance of archive mem recovery?
d) Do hardware version 2 calcs get to use the extra RAM? If so, why can't hw1 calcs use the RAM

I guaruntee eternal life to anyone who can answer my questions.

I don't no if I really want eternal life but I can answer some of you're questions.
I don't no if HW 1.00 calcs have the version in the about menu. I have a TI-92+ with HW 2.00.
A)Correct, I know it's stupid, I did the same thing so now i can't run ASM programs.
B)Software limit doesn't allow ASM programs over 8k to be ran. Another stupid thing that can't be fixed on my TI-92+ because of HW 2.00.
C)If you have anything archived and your calc crashes if you reset it (not taking out the batteries) you an recover it, but don't ask me how.
D)No. Well only for flash apps.
If you have any other questions please e-mail me.

P.S. I'm pretty sure i don't want eternal life, but thanks anyway.

HW1 calcs don't say their hardware version in the about screen.
For HW1 AMS 2.03 calcs, the extra archive memory (about half of it) only works for flashapps. HW 2 calcs can use all of the memory for anything.
The 'software limit' on memory is why HW 1 calcs have only half of the archive to store programs and data.
In AMS 2.03, after a crash or mem reset, the archive memory is restored. I have heard of cases were it did not compleatly work, but that has not happend to me.

Huh... it can't be explained in one or two sentences.
You need to know a lot of HW2 and AMS2.03 to understand how Julien breaked the protection. It is terribly dirty trick.

The trick IS "dirty" but NOT "little". Even the explanation of the basic idea only would take a whole page of text...

In other words, he doesn't know how Julien did it

btw, awesome work Julien, it is only a matter of time before we start manufacturing our own TI's that come with our choice of Universal OS, DoorsOS built in:P

YEAH!! I got it to work... somehow phoenix doesn't work though, it just freezes... anyway i have a question: which is better, universalos or doorsos?

I think doors os is better; I actually got it running on a hw2 calc (uos ran, but it kept giving my friend "memory" errors, even though he had 90% of his ram free)

does universal os have an interface like doors or is just a kernel?

I think you have to use a "third party shell" as the uos readme says

well, it should be allowed, it IS (at least, stated) fully compatible with doorsos; I don't think the shift+on shortcut to doors works though, correct me if I'm wrong

never mind about phoenix... it works on doorsos.
