Otaku Programming Association: opa.ticalc.org
Posted by Nick on 10 January 2000, 03:33 GMT

Otaku Programming AssociationAnd you thought life couldn't get any better. You were so wrong. Otaku Programming Association is now hosted under ticalc.org. This hosted site is another programming group. They have released programs such as Fallup for the 83 and the 83 Plus (Ion) and Latin Translator II for the 89. They're currently accepting new members and they have some great programs in store for the future, so be sure to head there soon!

Game piracy?

Huh? Is fallup is legal alteration of falldown? I looked at the source code, and it seems like less than a dozen lines of code were altered (by altered I mean changing hl's offset in certain places to make the screen upside down). I don't think Ahmed would knowingly allow someone else to take sole authorship credit for his work. "Based on Falldown"...

Even if fallup is "legal", it definitely should not be a featured program...

if you are refering to ticalc.org, which I think you are, it isn't a featured program, however, I don't even think it should be on the site. It is just a moron that attempted to write his own program, but probably realized it was too hard, and copied somebbody else's. I made this game already and it took me about 2 seconds. All you have to do is turn your calculator upside down. It doesn't take a good programmer to figure that out.

It was not piracy,
Paras got permission to release it. He gives credit in the readme.

If you have questions about this for him, email him:

In that case, you (OPA) have a very strange method of appropriating credit. In the Fallup docs, it says:
Fall Up????? version 1
By Paras Baxi
Based on Fall Down by:
Ian Graf (port) (ian_graf@geocities.com)
Florent Dhordain (original) (flo.dh@usa.net)
Ahmed El-Helw (original) (ahmedre@bellsouth.net)

What it should read:
By: Ahmed
Florent
Ian (port)
Modified by: Paras

There is a huge difference. Falldown 83 was BASED upon Falldown 89, but no code was shared. SubHunt 8X was based on a palm pilot game, but no code was shared. Fallup hacked 8 lines of Falldown code and was recompiled. Just look at the ticalc.org program information page, and you'll see only one author is listed.

Was it a featured program? I'm not sure it was. By the way if that more information icon looks familiar (you know the magnifying things that are next to every file) it should because it is a smaller version of the Microsoft Word print preview button. I am almost positive it is just a smaller version of that.

Exactly. Fall Down isn't even that hard of a game to code in the first place. I had a working version for the Game Boy after one night's programming (yes, it's on ACZ).

Still I don't the idea of seeing like 20 falldown clones with just minor alterations with the source code which is the case with the TI-83/83+ basic race games where all the "authors" change is the car or the walls and then say it's "their" game.

Hey, you took my idea. I was planning on releasing a clone of Falldown of my own, called Fallover, where it scrolls across instead of down. Geez! I was 97% through hacking Ahmed's code when this idiot released this. Darn. Maybe I'll hack Don Barnes' SMQ and have an anti-gravity version where you have magnetic boots that only stick to ceilings. <g>

I'm planning to make a Ztetris variant where the blocks fall upward. After that, I will make a SQRXZ takeoff where you move from right to left (I'll even make a level converter). Then I'll make a version of Galaxian where the levels come in reverse order. Finaly, I will pass them all off as original programing.

Geez Ya'all!!! You took MY idea. But I was much more creative. I was going to switch the keys around on my version of "Falloff Man" where I add a pair of eyes to the ball so it's a man...

Now you know what would be cool... If when Falloff Man *didn't* make it, you could see his blood and guts spatter all over the place.

On a more serious note, is it possible to make a version of Falldown where you can actually move faster than the advancing screen. Perhaps a version more reminiscent of that one Super Mario level where the giant wall of death keeps on advancing towards you. I hate it when I can't move anymore, when I'm stuck at the bottom of the screen until a new level appears.

Yeah, but unlike Mario, there is no real danger present by moving faster than the screen. In SMB, you might get crushed by a granite rock or hit by a goomba or fall off something if you don't wait for the screen to show you what's ahead. In falldown, however, it doesn't really make the game much more interesting.

Back to fallup, sure it has new "options" (uh 2 speed settings), however it does contain a serious bug (well my version does at least) if you get around 1300 points your ball gets stuck and you can't move it. I tried both speed settings, and I always get stuck at around 1300. I never had that problem with falldown, so it's not only a copy it's even a bad one.

You are assuming the truth is being told. Do you really think that Paras asked ticalc.org and/or freshmeat for permission to copy their layout? What kind of site would give that kind of permission anyway? If he indeed got permission to change Falldown, I bet it was permission to /really/ change it... What author would give permission to change a game as little as this when a version already exists?

I am the [co-]author of the site.
That's right, the AUTHOR. I copyied no one's site and I altered no one's code. There is only so much that you can do with a page and that is the end of my artistic means.
Unless you have a crappy page that is bland and boring, somewhere on the net you will find someone with a similar layout.
Our current layout suits us best and I like it so deal with it.

About Paras' Falldown, a new version is being released with PROPER documentation.
