More Games for AMS v2.0x
Posted by Nick on 13 December 1999, 23:20 GMT

More games are coming out with support under AMS v2.0x. These will function under the new kernel. You can download Falldown v0.1 and BoulderDash v1.1b5. If you have any other success stories with getting games to work on AMS v2.03, please email me.

just a quick question on apps:

do apps on the 89 fill up the same space (16k) as an 83+'s app does even if it doesn't fully use that much memory?

No, TI-89/92+'s have a 68k processor that can handle more than 16k (unlike z80's). That is the only reason that 83+ FlashApps are limited to 16k "chunks."

DArn, 2nd.
Anyway:
I dont know why you people are so jumpy over the asm 'crisis'. The Basic games work and always will. Some basic games are pretty darn good. Anyone up for monopoly? I think that TI SHOULD upgrade the sys mem for fixes, etc even if it means TEMPORARY loss of asms. TI makes CALCULATORS!!! NOT GAMEBOYS!!! Now: I dont think they should release updates too often if it causes certain existing functions to work inccorectly. But these guys are here for us. We should be glad 89 has a flash feature. If you want your asms, dont upgrade! Its that simple.

I don't know how often a game of monopoly really keeps you from being bored in math class, or any BASIC game for that matter. ASM games are a lot faster and can be more action-filled such as phoenix.

Something else:

Nick Disibato (since my name is Nick too): The news item says falldown twice. isn't the second one supposed to be Boulder Dash?

I think that people should pretend that BASIC games and Assembly are written in the same language, then judge them. Of course, assemble games would still probably end up favorites, but there are some 89 basic games (notable Final Fantasy Dimension) that are excellent!
I enjoy FFD more than many ASM games I've played. It's incredible that the author managed to do it in BASIC. I've heard the BASIC version of Zelda is good too, but I've yet to play it,
Yes, I know asm is better, faster, more versatile, etc., but just play the game before you judge it.

i don't know if any of you game-heads know this or not but there are asm programs out there that are NOT games. i repeat, asm programs that are *NOT* games. what are these pieces of magic you ask? excellent programs like periodic tables. yes, that's right. school crap. and you know what? <actually, you might have guessed it already, but i'll verbalize it just in case you didn't> i'm rather pissed that these wonderful marvels of animation and information don't work on my 'better' <HA!> rom v.2.03.b.

Yah, all the BASIC math programs and helpers work on the new ROM I assume. Some of the periodic tables probably work if they are below 8k. My TIPhoneBook89 Program will not work on 2.03 since searching strings and calling up information is completely messed up in ROM 2.03

I believe Basic games are really bad. They are slow and often too boring to play. Except for some which I find quite good. The new AMS v2.03 is really crappy and I won't upgrade to until I get the same ASM functionality on my calculator with all or at least most programs.

How do you know that AMS 2.0x is crappy if you haven't upgraded? I have used AMS 2.0x along with the new Statistics app for about two days now, and am still finding out new stuff to do with it. In addition, in less than a week, some of the best games for the 89 ever made are already running on the new platform. Right now is a perfect time to upgrade.

About your BASIC comment, many BASIC programs are very well made, and do not fit the description your overgeneralizing comment gives them. However, I'm not going to side with the BASMIC campaign because I don't agree with the entire thing. I think its absurd to compare ASM with BASIC. In any case, it's not fair to BASIC programmers to say that everything they make is junk, because you're dead wrong.

You can also get Nibbles for AMS 2.0x with the 0.6 Kernel.

It's on Dim-TI already, and I submitted it to ticalc.or last night.

Sure, the games work, but none of the high score features work. It won't save your name on Tetris or FallDown.

I noticed the same thing. Sometimes during Tetris and some of the other games I could see the screen flickering noticeably. Kinda annoying... but I'm sure these problems will be fixed in the next actual updates of these games. The ones right now are just quick fixes and not much should be expected.

High scores don't work i believe since the VAT system in 2.03 is all messed up. Probably complete changes to the high-score systems will have to be made to make them work.

That's good that all these games are getting updated, but I have a question. Is everyone just working on the 89 right now and ignoring the 92+? I have the 92+ and I'm not able to play games right now. Is there any reason for this, or is it just that there are more 89 programmers then 92+ programmers?

I have noticed that too! Why don't you guys make more games and/or programs that work on both calcs, or get some people to work on the 92+ as well! The original 92 did come out before the 89 calc were ever released. Think about how many people who have a 92 with the +module in them. So get some people to work on the 92+!!! It's stupid to work on just the 89 when the 92+ is the same, exact thing, but bigger.

believe it or not, but not everybody that owns an 89 also owns a 92+. it's kind of hard to program for something you know nothing about. and if the 89 and the 92+ were the same thing, than all programs would work on both systems. but they don't, therefore the two calcutators are not the same.

Yes, I know it can be hard to program for something you don't have. But there must be some 92+ programmers out there. Does anyone know of any games in the works?

Re: Re: Re: Re: More Games for AMS v2.0x

I'm not saying everyone that has an 89 has a 92+. But they both contain the 68K processor. They both have the save software even. The only differences are keys and screens. You could make one program that, when compiled, will generate an 89 program an a 92+ program. Now, I know nothing about ASM, but I read readme files. I have even tried to read some tutorials on ASM. So I know about some of the things I am talking about. It is already possible to tell the compiler which calc it is for, but it can only create one program for a specific calc. Also, a little off topic here, is anyone trying to find ways of making 8x ASM games convertable to other 8x or 92(+) calcs? If you can make 82 and 85 games work with a certain shell on the 86, can't other calc programs be converted to work on some other calc? I still think that ASM 2.03 is better than 1.0x, but I really want to get some better games. The ones I have are all in BASIC!
