PuzzPack v1.0 Released by TCPA
Posted by Nick on 4 December 1999, 06:54 GMT

PuzzPack v1.0TCPA has released another TI-83 Plus FLASH application today called The TCPA Puzzle Pack. It contains four of the puzzle games created by members of TCPA: Yoshi, Block Dude, Tetris Attack, and Pegs. This application was programmed and organized by Jason Kovacs. "The purpose of creating this flash app," Jason says, "is to collaborate the efforts of the TCPA, allowing the programs to share code and minimize the amount of memory used for them. We wanted to release our games in this more professional form since applications are officially signed by Texas Instruments themselves."

I'd like to note that for TI-83+ users, the version of Pegs works fine within this Application, and you can play the game there. I say this because we have still be getting reports that Pegs v1.1 for the 83+ (ION) has been crashing people's calculators. For some reason, Pegs v1.1 works on the 83 (SOS), the 83 (ION), and within this App that is shell-less, so I still beleive there is a problem that ION has on the 83+ in the way it archives programs. We'll still look into getting that version fixed though... Thanks to everyone who has posted on this Comments Board with all their positive comments about the Puzzle Pack. =)

No, according to TCPA's website, Block dude's only available for ION on the 83/83+. It's also available for the 82 and the 86! Which is cool cause i have an 86! :)

How many Flash apps can the calc hold? Isn't there some kind of limit?

Yes, there is ONE limit, the amount of archive space you have left. When you first get the 83+, it has 160 K of archive memory, so you can get about 8 or 9 apps on it, and then you can get some games because of the extra 20 K of free RAM. So I wouldn't worry about running out of space for apps just yet. With all that archive space, you could get most or all of the ION games made so far onto your calc. HeHeHe... it's great having an 83+.

I still think the 86 is the best z80 calc with its large amount of ram and the menu system it has. Also, it can emulate 82 and 85 games as well :)

It may be better for what you want it to do but some people have their reasons for buying others.

ASM programs can crash. If a Flash ASM program crashes, you take out the bateries and put them back in. As far as I know, the program will still be in the calculators memory. Could some serious damage happen if a FLASH program crashes?

This App will not crash anyone's calc, but in general if a Flash App crashes, the tamporary damage to the calc is no greater than what an ASM program running from RAM can do... Crashes usually occur when writing to locations that arent intended to be written to by the OS. First of all, a Flash App is in Flash ROM, so nothing can be written to it except through TI's special procedures. Another way for causing a crash is setting a system flag or port incorrectly and the system cant handle it. This can occur in Calcsys for sure, and many people have done it, but the calc has always been able to recover. In this App though, the most dangerous thing it does is working with the Appvar for saving level data, but PuzzPack has been thoroughly tested. Don't worry about it...

VTI is my favorite Emulator, but the point is, I hope that it could be possible to play the games using an Emulator. I don't like using the graphlink, because it takes sometime to send the program to the calculator. Plus, if the calculator crashes, you have to do it all over again. But I guess it is not going to be done (open Flash programs with an Emulator)

VTI can't currently load or execute Flash Applications. Im not sure how it even emulates the FlashROM area... The point of VTI is for developers to send their programs to the Emu which is right on their computer, rather than having to resend to the calculator after every change. VTI can be used to play these games, sure, but the point of making these games is to play on the calculator when you are not at your computer. And once youve sent this App to your calculator, it stays in FlashROM after a crash, which makes your last statement false for this topic.

You know...you can get TI's flash simulator for free, which is a TI-83+ emulator which runs applications just fine. Check out www.ti.com/calc/docs/sdk.html.

Looks like they have made some changes too...

This is cool... looks like the TCPA made a few changes and bug fixes while they were at it. Like some of the levels is Pegs are different from the old (buggy) ION version... also they fixed a tiny bug in block dude, the "Secret level Select" menu no longer has that line to the right of the numbers.

I just now noticed that the circles in Pegs look more like circles now. I remember that in the old one, they looked more like diamonds. :)

what "secret level select" menu are you talking about? I have block dude on my 86 and I have never seen that menu. I have beat the game so that can't be why.

Try pressing the alpha key on all the menu's on the title screen... on my 83+, a thing comes up saying "Secret Level Select", there you can pick any level you want to play. :)

well since I have beat the game and have all the passwords I don't really need this anyway. I thought it might be some hidden level but if it's just a warp to all the levels I don't really need it.
