Ben Mickle Releases Zip86
Posted by Nick on 10 November 1999, 16:45 GMT

Ben Mickle released a wonderful utility for the 86 recently called Zip86. It's used for compressing both assembly and basic programs on the calculator so you can fit more on. After they're compressed, you can run them like you would run any normal program. For those of you who don't understand the value of this, the 86's large amount of memory is effectively made much, much larger with the use of this program :).

It's interesting that the use of less addictive drugs by individuals who possess the mental capacity and maturity to subject themselves to weak drugs (such as lsd and beer) results in a happy person rather than the frugal disgusting wrech that you would normally associate with drug use. One could even expostulate that a short term use of lsd has more benefits than set-backs. I think that the currency for the dissemination of wisdom and information is often drug use and drug users, as seen in Kerouac, Ginsberg Burroughs, Jim Morrison and even Aldous Huxley (an advocate of lsd). That's my arbitrary thought of the moment, now i must get myself another "cold one" from the fridge.

Bah you fool, why must you put our conversations on ticalc.org? Anyway in Zip86, if you guys need to take the batteries out, i've noticed that it "usually" won't crash. I've noticed a few problems with programs such as asmide... but that's a previous beta which none of you have, and it should be fixed :)

LSD is not a weak drug. Although it is not an addictive drug, it can cause anything from a lifetime of occasional mental incongruity to brain death. It could happen anywhere from the first time you use it, to 30 years later. If you want to stay happy I suggest you stick with natural substances, such as shrooms, peyote, and of course that smelly green shit. Although one could argue that inhalation of any smoke is harmful, THC is perfectly safe. In fact it is the safest therapeutically active drug known to man.

In a related note, current projections put the end of the current hemp prohibition at 5-7 years. That will be followed by the immediate release of Marlboro Blues, the end of national dept, the return of the phrase "make love, not war," and finally world peace.

Why is this so "newswhorty?" The TI-89/92+ have had this function with DoorsOS for a long time now. You know ziplib by Marc TEYSSIER.

Because, Mr. Not-So-Smart, it is for a lowly 86, not a Highly 89.

"Mr. Not-So-Smart" He He :-)

Anyways, I was just windering if compression is such a big deal why didn't ziplib get a news article. Also there has been compression on the 86 before in the use of huffman and bloat compression among others. I just didn't see this beeing so newsworthy as on the 89 there is a program called "ziper" that basically does the same thing and it never got a news article.

A TI-86 in *NOT* Lowly, it is "top-of-the-line" z80 based calc.

I don't know, I guess its because its for the 86 and not the 89/92+.

But its interesting to note, this news item was posted a full 36 hours AFTER the program had been added to the archives.

It is added, even through something like it is out for OTHER CALC because this will help TI-86 USERS, and i bet like no 86 users remember about other one for other calc, i think its gr8 idea, but i only tried once it it locked calc up!! well mb i try it this weekend again to see what all prgms it will workgood for.

It's a very good program, but not truly worth it.
It only saved me 1k of space (including the program size), which is not worth the compression and decompression time. With some enhancements (like compressing ability for strings, I have many 85 progies), it would be excellent.

could it be possible to make it compress then send it to another calc which can decompress it using the same decompressor, just ported to that calc, making a way of filesharing with calcs? is there such a program already out that allows you to share files between calcs that usually dont?

Good idea. But I dont see that happening *anytime soon.* That would be nice though if we could share 86 ASM with 89 ASM and vice versa. Ahh Dreams....

Could the 86 vs. 89 wars be over?
A beautiful thought, however nothing more. It's been stated in the past that it's nearly impossible to do a direct port from TI 73-86 to 89-92 calcs. Although it may be possible to do this with Basic programs.
A side note: does this use LZW compression?

I could be wrong, but I think he meant to ask if it was possible to compress a TI-83 PRGM file and compress it as a TI-86 PRGM on the TI-86, and send it to a TI-83 (it would then be a compressed TI-83 PRGM file).

That would be insanely useful for the TI-86, and even more so for the TI-89. That way people could give programs to others, even though they couldn't use those programs on their calculators, themselves.

yeah, thats a good example, compress an 83 file on the comp as an 86 file, send it to my 86, then use a special program to send that file to an 83, and have the 83 uncompress it and run it

That is what I meant to say. Something like a "backup" if you will. I know this would ne useful because my friends and I share matrices between an 85 and an 89. That "idea" would make a truly newsworthy program, if ever made.

Since the processors are different, it's not easy at all to convert 73-86 code to run on the 89-92. However, this will change soon, as I plan to release a program which will convert programs for Z80 calcs to run on the 68K calcs.
