TI-OS 2.53 Released for TI-84+ Family
Posted by Nikky on 15 February 2010, 18:30 GMT

MathPrint ScreenshotTexas Instruments has released a significant OS upgrade for the TI-84+ family of calculators. Version 2.53MP was made available for download earlier today at TI's official website, and appears to contain significant changes to the operating system. Also updated were manuals to reflect the OS changes, and Catalog Help was upgraded to version 1.1. A preview version of 2.53MP was allegedly leaked to community members, and multiple sites have reported

Features of 2.53MP include:

  • MathPrint, which provides functionality similar to the PrettyPrint application. TI notes that "With MathPrint, educators and students can input and view math symbols, formulas and stacked fractions exactly as they appear in textbooks."
  • A "two page" MODE menu to access MathPrint options.
  • MathPrint allows the use of basic copy/paste for recalling past calculations by scrolling through the output.
  • Multiple new hooks and 96 additional bcalls.
MathPrint Screenshot WikiTI has been updating a page documenting new features, bugs, and incompatibility issues. Notable highlights include:
  • All programs using the home screen will most likely be broken if MathPrint is enabled.
  • MathPrint cannot handle overly complex equations.
  • Omnicalc and CalcUtil experience significant runtime issues.
  • Users are reporting that many BASIC programs are significantly slower.

As with any significant OS update, users are encouraged to try the new features and to test compatibility with 3rd party software. It is important to restate that many BASIC programs are experiencing major slowdown issues, and casual users may want to refrain from updating at this time if they run BASIC programs. If you do choose to upgrade, please share your experiences!

Update 2 (02/28/2010): Andy Kemp provides a nice writeup of the new features.

If you turn MathPrint OFF this will solve all slowdown issues. However, you will still have display problems with BASIC games that uses inverted text (white on black) and certain ASM libs that deals with hooks such as Omnicalc will have issues

I only recommend upgrading if you absolutely are in need of the new functions. Otherwise, wait, maybe eventually the TI community will fix all these issues by itself

Wow this is awesome looking. The shortcut menu just screams of the later TI versions. I didn't even know there were 2.42-2.52!

They skipped from 2.43 to 2.53. Before this one, the most current version was 2.43.

I have added a link to the TI-BANK article in the original post. You can click on "have" to visit it, and is listed with the other source websites. I neglected to mention them in the original post.

Additionally, new screenshots have been added, courtesy of Randomist.

Bug I found was when I ran a subprogram within a program, after the control is returned back to the calling program, the calculator always throws an ERR:SYNTAX at the end of the line that called the subprogram. I have no idea why this happens. Perhaps someone has a tip?

I downloaded the new user manual. It might be my imagination but I suspect the term mathprint might be trademarked.

They also tried to claim Pretty Print as a trademark, but had little to no success with that and they aren't trying to enforce it to my knowledge. Maybe they're now trying with a new name in the hope of actually having an enforceable trademark.

p.s.

The manual isn't clear, but what would be the sequence of keypresses if you want (5+6)^7 ?

How re-editable are these expressions? Can the previous example be easily changed to (sin(0.5)+6+10)^7 ?

just press those keys with the os installed. To edit it, just use the left and right arrows.

I've used equation writers from the hp49g, the computer and even wrote one for the ti89. They can get rather complicated.

lets say you've typed 5+7, how easy is it to turn that into (5+7)^9 ? On the 49g or ti89 you would highlight the 5+7, then press ^ and then press 9.

A quick search of the US trademark database turns up no registered trademarks with the text "MATH PRINT" or "MATHPRINT".

In the spirit of (hopefully constructive) self-promotion, SourceCoder 2.0 has been updated to understand the new tokens, and Cemetech member player1537 has compiled a quantitative set of benchmarks for the new homescreen's performance:

Now would be a really good time for someone to come out with their own OS that can do better than this now that we have the keys.

I'm significantly miffed that there's such a significant shortage of the word significant and forms thereof in this news article. :/

by the way, you can still get 2.43 from the ti's official site...
idk if that was said or not but everyone was talking about how they didn't want to risk being stuck with 2.53
