USB Direct Cables Supported in TiLP
Posted by Michael on 29 May 2006, 14:18 GMT

The TiLP-II v0.13 beta version has been released for UNIX and Windows, and I am happy to report that it now supports the direct USB cables used by the TI-84 Plus and TI-89 Titanium. Romain Liévin has made TiLP the first and only linking program besides TI Connect to support the direct USB functionality in those newer calculators. As it is a beta version, I'm sure feedback and bug reports involving USB communication would be helpful.

When I run ./configure, it errors out with this:

configure: error: Package requirements (ticables2 >= 0.0.9) were not met.

I have ticables installed, but I don't know what to do about ticables2.

Well, install it. :-) libticables1 and libticables2 are completely separate. Sure, libticables2 is partially derived from libticables1 code, but you can install them both completely separately and programs built for one won't work with the other unless ported.

Does Ti-LPsupport the old-fashioned serial black link?

Yes.

I like the old serial links

I built a adapter that I can more easily carry -- a serial port connected to a female link port

It works great from the plans here -- and works with ti-connect as "black link"

fast, compact, durable, efficient...er...good

I agree, too... Moreover, from a technical point of view, it's easier to use with emulators.

Isn't it sad that COM ports are more universal than "Universal Serial Bus"...

The serial ports have a few advantages for "hardware hacking" as their addressing is easier and that they require no other controllers to operate. However, the serial interface is disappearing on new computers- my 4-year-old laptop is actually one of the newest I know of with a serial port, a parallel port, and an integrated floppy drive.

Oh, and I believe that why the USB SilverLink cable is so slow is that it uses a serial-USB driver in the OS's kernel and that caps speeds. My Palm Tungsten T has the same 115 Kbps limit as it uses a USB-serial kernel module too.

I built a serial link and a parallel link, the parallel link only works on our old 500mhz Win 98 PC and I have not been able to get the serial link (built from the plans here on ticalc.org) to function on any PC. I don't know what to do. I would rather use the USB connection anyways.

make sure the zener diodes are the right way around...and check against these plans (web link)

if that doesn't work you could try taking it apart and rebuilding it. I soldered the resisters directly to a D9 female socket and put the entire thing in a D9 hood with a cordless phone plug at the other end so I just plug in the link.

be patient...it will eventually work, and even with ti's own software as "black link"

oh--and make sure you set the right COM port if needed

I'm using TiLP (Version 1, 6.78) on my laptop running Windows 2000. When I plugged in my serial link after checking it with the schematic, the LED came on when the PC booted, but went off after Windows 2000 loaded. TiLP gives me the error: "Unable to use parallel/serial port: access refused. Cause: Is portTalk installed/started? You may have to install TiLP with administrator privileges. System: GetLastError =8 -> Not enough storage is available to process this command." I get the same message even if the link is not plugged in to the PC.

On my XP desktop, it allows me to check OK and get to the Tilp-II page. It then tells me that a timeout occurred and "System: (2089878321) The Handle is Invalid."

Both of my computers have one parallel and one serial port. My parallel link doesn't work on any of my computers, but works on my parent's old one. What port should I use for my serial link under TiLP II?

If you only have one serial port, it is COM1.

Can you use any Serial-2.5mm link with TI-Graph Link?

I keep getting the error message "Unable to Load TiglUsb Library. Cause: is the LPG SilverLink/DirectLink Driver Installed?". I had TI-Connect's driver installed but wanted to change to TiLP's. I uninstalled the driver under the Device Manager and then pointed to TiglUsb under WinXP/Drivers but it said that the driver did not contain any information about my DirectLink 84+SilverEdition which shows up as TI Educational Device on my PC. How do I install the driver for XP?

I have the same problem. I can't find the tiglusb.sys files for XP. Maybe I should switch back to 98.

The archive I recently upload on ticalc.org (v3.5) has a problem: the driver file is missing (TiglUsb.sys).
Sorry for that!

I have upload again the package in the ticalc.org archives. I have just seen it's available on their homepage. Update and tell me whether your problem is solved...

Thanks! Works great on Windows XP with my TI84+SE. Just wondering, does it support ROM dumping over the USB yet?

Only on the TI-89 Titanium, sorry.

The Z80 ROM dumper hasn't been ported to Direct USB yet. Benjamin Moody and Dan Englender said on the DS forum they are looking into it.
