TI-84 Plus OS v2.41 Released
Posted by Michael on 7 May 2006, 04:47 GMT

TI has released version 2.41 of the TI-84 Plus operating system. As usual, there is a vague comment that tells us nothing about what changes are new to this version. It appears that the website has not been fully updated yet, as there are references to both 2.40 and 2.41 on the download page. If you are aware of any changes in this version, please post in the comments.

Boycott the new OS until TI informs what it's doing...

It seems that they are updating the Ti-84 plus more is becasue it is more widely owned (especially for younger individuals who do not need a incredibly powerful calc). The Ti-84 may have some bugs that need to be fixed, but there may be many other reasons.

I'm wondering how many people who don't either hang around the TI website or someplace like this a lot even know that 2.40 let alone 2.41 came out. It's not like most people would ever find out for a long time, so I'm not quite sure what the point of updating the OS a lot is unless the new teacher lock thing has a lot of bugs in it.

Well in 2.40, the lock deleted groups. They probably fixed that.

Maybe someone should check to see if the lock in 2.41 deletes groups. By that I mean someone besides me - I really don't feel like checking right now.

I tried, but still all groups vanished, even with the Hide option of GroupTool.

TI Connect will notify you of updates. I'm pretty sure all new 84+ calcs come with TI Connect software. They will know of an OS update. In fact, your reasoning might be why TI is doing this lock down thing. The majority of calculator users aren't serious programmers and are less likely to hang around a website where they will find out about their evil plans.

What I meant was something closer to the average calculator user never uses TI Connect much since they don't care much about their calculator and the only programs they have are games they got from their friend's calculator. Not being an average calculator user I'm not actually sure how much they use TI Connect, but I don't think they'd have much reason to use it that often.

I'm going to try to contact TI tomorrow during their standard operating hours (nobody answers the phones on the weekends) and see what is included in the change. I'll let you guys know if I find anything out.

Well. After talking to "Rachel", I leaned that the update fixes a bug in the computer-to-calculator operating system update routine. It was apparently rare in 2.40, but something bad would happen if upgrading your OS. 2.41 fixes this.

She also said that it increases the amount of available RAM, and something about parts being faster.

Sounds like a worthwhile update all around. Too bad the don't say this rightaway.

Just to make myself clear... what do you mean by "She also said that it increases the amount of available RAM, and something about parts being faster."? And, big (or small) of RAM memory does it make for the TI-84PSE? Just wondering. I still have OS 2.40. Not sure if I should update to 2.41, but it's worth a try.

She did not specify. I gave you what she said, mostly word-for-word, with all given details and no added ones. (The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.)

maybe it means that you can access more than 24K out of 128K of user memory. see link

I don't see any new updates with v 2.41.... There is no memory upgrade...still plain, old 24k... I don't see any point of downloading it right now :o

What it probably is, is that it manages how much ram the os uses. So the os probably uses less ram. But it probably only frees up just a few bytes

In other words, the OS upgrade routine is broken and the fix is to upgrade the OS?! Argh...

hopefully Ti is smarter then to have a simple bug in the OS make upgrading imposible.

I wouldn't put it beyond TI.
Hmm..... We all own and some love their calc's, but we are seemingly tring to come up with as many problems as we can with them. That's just plain creepy. :O

you'd think there would be some sort of firmware base that would be able to force a update regardless of OS damage or other problems

There is, it is called the "boot page." After installing 2.40, I couldn't connect to my computer so I tried sending 2.30 back to the calc. The batteries died halfway through the transfer and my calc went to the "boot page." It says to start a transfer of the OS or turn the calc off, nothing else can be done there.

As for the faster bit, Ive noticed un/archiving is faster, as well as menu scrolling. Other small things like that.
