TI-83 Plus BASIC Math Subdirectories
Posted by Michael on 7 February 2006, 05:35 GMT

In order to better organize our archives, we have added some subfolders to the TI-83 Plus BASIC Math Programs directory. We have created algebra, calculus, geometry, and trigonometry folders. There is also now a special folder for those quintessential BASIC programs, quadratic solvers. Please make sure you upload your mathematics programs to the proper folder. General/multipurpose math programs and those in topics not covered by a subfolder will remain in the general math folder.

A couple additional notes:

- If you are uploading an update to an existing file, you always want to upload your update with the SAME EXACT filename that is in the archves. Now, check to see if your file has been moved, and if it has, upload your updates to the correct directory as well. (Note that nothing here has changed; this is mostly a reminder about the instructions given on the file upload page that nobody ever follows.)

- If you have any inbound download links to your .zip files from other websites, it's quite possible that they have been broken. You might wish to check them. Note that if you want to link to a file on ticalc.org, link to it's file info page! (the one that have archives/files/fileinfo in them.) These pages won't change as often, and won't change if we move your file. They also will stay constant if you upload any updates correctly following my previous point.

- Michael and I moved over 1,100 files do reorganize the folder. I can almost assure you that one file either got missed or was moved improperly. If you have any corrections, either e-mail filearch@ticalc.org, or just use the inappropriate file report form. Don't feel bad about using the report form for other purposes; people rarely use it for its intended purpose anyways.

- If you have a bunch of BASIC Math programs, you may wish to check on them to see if we sorted everything appropriately.

(evidently even staff members have length limits...)

- Yes, I'm aware 83+ BASIC Misc. Programs is even a bigger mess than 83+ BASIC Math. I'll be taking a look at how to begin to subdivide it, but if you have any ideas, feel free to e-mail me!

- Hopefully finding files within the new directory structure is relatively intuitive, but if something we did really doesn't make sense to you, e-mail me and maybe we can find a better way of doing it. We want this to make it easier to find files; not to hide them away into all sorts of subdirectories.

- Users of slower computers and dialup users can appreciate the fact that this cuts down on file listing sizes in half. You don't have to recommend that we also add in paging, we're already aware of the idea and feedback from the Poll we had a week or two ago.

- Just because we have a directory for quadratic solvers doesn't mean we are now accepting new ones. :-) Updates to existing ones are always allowed, of course.

And if you didn't get the general hint: feel free to e-mail feedback and ideas!

To clarify: If you come here and don't know much about calculator programming, maybe put out a couple not-so-good programs and occasionally ask a stupid question, that's fine, and no one could care less, as long as you learn from your mistakes. It's only when people do things that even non-programmers realize are stupid, like upload quadratic solvers (even though there are literally hundreds in the archives already) or e-mail authors of programs / post on unrelated message boards asking how to send files to your calculator and similar stuff (when you could easily find out how from the manual, or a google search, or the FAQ right on this site, or...) that it gets really annoying.

Sorry that this is offtopic - I just wanted to make it clear that I'm not insulting all beginners.

Yes, there is a HUGE difference between a newbie and a n00b. Newbies are welcomed into the TI-Calc community. N00bs, though...that's something different. Did you ever stop to think that MAYBE no one needs a BASIC stopwatch or clock, reset program, sleep program, a multiple choice guesser, or poorly made chat programs?? Sorry if I got a little ticked off there, but I do get upset when people don't understand their programs are useless (especially when they say things like "This is the coolest program you'll ever download!" and then write reviews for themselves).

On a better note, any of you aspiring programmers are welcome to seek advice and such from this site, but please don't upload your programs (at least not until they're good). Share them with your friends instead and keep programming!

Last I checked, linking directly to a .zip file dumped you into the directory listing.

On Cemetech we've been having a discussion about this after I noticed the division taking place yesterday, and so far we came up with this for the 83plus/basic/games folder; I think we talked about working on a Misc. breakup scheme next.

I believe card games would be useful (poker, blackjack, etc) as there are a bunch of those.

I would also be tempted to move the files within your proposed /arcade into files directly within /games. I'm not sure I like the idea of there being a "puzzle" and "arcade/puzzle" directory (what's the difference?)

A BIG motivation for any directory structure is to quickly estimate how many files will be going into any particular folder; if you think a folder will only have two or three files in it, see if you can do it differently that will work better.

OK, so with this feedback, let's try this:

Games

+-RPG (obvious)
+-Maze (there are a fair number of these)
+-Puzzle (previously puzzle + arcade/puzzle/)
+-+- Guessing Games (even though ticalc.org no longer accepts these. :D )
+-3D/FPS (anything calling itself an FPS or 3D)
+-Racing (and the many clones and variations thereof)
+-Card (as per the suggestion above)
+-Arcade
+-+-Side-Scrolling
+-+-Top-Down
+-Other (ie, root /games/ dir)

Keep those ideas coming.

Fair enough. How about Arcade just be a catchall for arcade-type games, and everything else be first-level? Thusly:

+-Puzzle (previously puzzle + arcade/puzzle/)
+-Guessing Games (even though ticalc.org no longer accepts these. :D )
+-3D/FPS (anything calling itself an FPS or 3D)

+-Space Shooters (what about this one instead of side-scrollers?)
+-Arcade
+-Sports
+-Other (ie, root /games/ dir)

Better now?.. probably most of the games would fit into the arcade section. That's usually the type games that you find made for calculators..
