Wizards for the 83/83+
Posted by Michael on 2 October 2005, 05:25 GMT

[Wizards] Wizards for the 83/83+ is a member of an often underrepresented segment of calculator gaming: card games. According to the author, it is similar to Magic: The Gathering. In Wizards you are fighting against other creatures in order to win cards and money so as to progress to the top. I really know absolutely nothing about card games, so if you like card games, just download it.

This game is absolutely coolio in the utmost sense. The only turn-off would be the limited number of cards. Oh, and link play. Needs link play. But other than that, download it now. This should soon become as popular as MirageOS, if not more so.

I hope this is the start of a new craze in calculator gaming. Perhaps the Kevin Ouellet of TCGs will come along someday and blow us all away.

I agree with the above reply. The only thing missing from the game is multiplaye link options (trading and battling) and more cards. When I emailed the author about this, he told me he was working on a trade system, and if you want more cards to send him ideas. I forgot his email but you should know it if you download it. I think I was one of the first to download and play test it, and I knew from the very beginning this game would be big. Although it might not be as popular as Mirage (can't forget that most people want action not strategy) it will be one of the greats. I can't wait for the final release!

I haven't downloaded and tried this game yet, but if its really like Magic: The Gathering (which I have played with real cards) it will be very good. As for, the link option, that will probably come out soon. However, those of you asking for more cards, remember that there's a memory limit. Since I have an TI-83 Plus Silver Edition and a TI-89 Titanium, and I prefer to use my TI-89 Titanium, I hope a 68k version of this game is released sometime, if it hasn't already been released. (tell me if it already has been released)

True, there is a memory limit but I'm sure it could fit a few more cards. It's about 17k on calc. I beat it in about 2 hours, great game.

Why not make it a flash app? That would make it possible for decks and decks of cards :)

Its me. I still cant believe that this game made it to the main page of TiCalc!
Yeah, I think I will make Wizards an APP (in hope of you guys sending me new card ideas!!).
Ah and I dont think Wizards will be available for the 89.
Ah and link game is really memory expensive, maybe (really just maybe) I can include trade and battle option. But then I would have to change all card effect and stuff - that means that it could only be a program of its own. So: Maybe.

well if you make it a flash app, couldnt you have the opportunity to make a link feature? as long as it doesnt take more than 40k memory. this reminds me of bubble bobble. i had the app version (big memory consumer) but then i got it for my mirage and it worked the same. i suppose what im getting at is its better one way or another and its the author and player's choice as to which one will be better. if more cards and link means app, i vote for app. maybe other people should vote...

Well, I think that there is a computer program that will convert z80 programs to 68k, so I will see if that works. If it doesn't, oh well, I guess I'll just have to play it on my TI-83 Plus Silver Edition.

You could always just rewrite the code. RPITA I know, but still worth it. It'll take you awhile, as it took me several months to port Timerize 84+ to the 68k calcs, and that was BASIC! ASM can only be harder. Maybe C...

lol haha, I don't even know how to program in ASM, for z80 or 68k, so I doubt that will happen unless someone else does it.

This is a flaw in this game after I beat everything and have most of the cards my money just keep piling up. And there is no way to spend it. I think You should have some really powerful card with very high price that's only sold in the shop.

There's even more flaws, I already emailed the author about one, but here's another. After playing the ultimate potion when you are poisened and an enemy poisens you the symbol disapears, but you still get damage loss. Then when you use antidote the symbol appears, but no damage.

You don't have to have to make in an app just to get more cards... ASM programs do have access to the files in flash. Just put all the read-only data in a seperate AppVar and keep that in the flash. Whenever you need some of that information, just copy what you need from that appvar back into ram. If you spend enough time looking at how it all works, it is even possible to run code right off of the flash rom without copying it to ram (just be careful when using absolute addressing).

As a former "Magic" player, I can tell you that it is ver y similar. It's also *REALLY* addictive - I've been playing it continuously since I downloaded it.

i find it hard to stay addicted to the same monsters with the same cards and the same creature to play with. i admit i played it continuously after i downloaded, but after a day i got bored playing the same thing. a better thing for the final version would be a random mode. maybe with more cards random modes could be devised for violence, poison, and holy and maybe some new categories could be unholy, burning, freezing, super violent, and beginner/intermediate/expert mode. im throwing ideas around maybe everyone else should so we can end up with a great game!

i think that a program for the computer should come out that allows you to make your own cards, and people can download them onto their calc, so they will appear in the shop when they next play. it'd be sort of like all the mario levels you can make and download.

But I'd make a card that deals 700 damage and costs 50 money and requires 0 Aether, and win handily.

well not all of us can listen to music on the calculator. i dont think we would need to use more memory for the music, better reserved for more cards.

But still it takes up memory.. memory that could be used to put a card in.. the point: You're beaten so give it up.. the game doesn't need music..

Considering he has already said that he is going to make it into an APP, memory is not an issue, especially if you have a TI84SE. Music would be a great improvement, and if you dont believe that the memory is worth it, maybe there could be a non-music game also for you.

I have an 83+SE so memory's not all that big of a deal for me either, but I still say boo to APPS.. I like to have all my games/programs in one spot [MirageOS], and having to get out of it to go to the APPS menu is a hassle.. I'm not saying I wouldn't download the game if it was made into an app, but I would certainly prefer it left as a program.
