Hey! No automated news! One of the great things about ticalc is that every single news article is written by a real human, and every single one is worth reading. Not just quoting another site, or posting a link (slashdot, I'm thinking of you...). Let's not spoil it, even if that means less news.

That is quite possible.
I remember reading this article in popular science about some university students who wrote a script that generated random technical papers that were almost impossible to tell apart from real ones.
This is how it worked:
-program uses a large database of scientific words and phrases
-database of sentence structures that occur in papers referenced randomly with nouns and adjectives missing
-program fills in the holes, and *OMG* you have a fake paper!

Not that it's a good idea, but it is possible. :^)

You can find many interesting candidates, like this one. Simple but effective. Of course the papers generated are obviously fake, but they are good for a laugh. See link.

I think that the hardest part is synthisizing an artical by reading the discription and/or readme.

hey man, let's cut the sarcasm; I'm sure i'm not the only person who visits ticalc.org (and also the TI-Chess team's page, as someday the TICT-Explorer will support titanium) on a daily basis just to see what's new.

Why don't you use a newsreader program to subscribe to the RSS feed? Then you wouldn't have to manually check every day.

1.) What newsreader program do you suggest? I rarely read news, but if I were to go back to reading slashdot, how can i read news with Opera,Firefox, or Internet explorer?
2.) I like to check and see what new TI89 and 83+ programs are added.
3.) Visiting the TICT site adds to their visitor counter (right?)

This page http://www.ticalc.org/services/ syndication.html (remove the space) explains the available feeds, and how they can be used. One of the feeds lists all the new files that are added to the archives, you wouldn't miss anything.

By using the RSS feeds, they still know you're visiting, but you don't load the server as much, so they don't have to pay as much for bandwidth.

I use NewsFire on Mac OS X for reading RSS feeds. I used Desktop Sidebar's RSS reader plugin on Windows 2000 for a while, but I've since stopped reading RSS feeds on Windows. I'm sure there are some other great Windows news reader programs on Windows that I don't know about.

Google's new "Personalized Home" allows users to read RSS feeds along with a variety of other features (Check Gmail, local weather, quote/word/howtodo/... of the day, etc, etc)... It's pretty useful (Check the link if you're an unenlightened non-Google user ;-) )

Dude, both Firefox and Opera allow you to subscribe to RSS feeds. Just look for the blue RSS icon in the title bar in Opera, or the orange signal icon in the bottom right hand corner of Firefox.

Internet Explorer can't read RSS, because there have not been any significant updates for like 5 years. If you still use it, I encourage you to switch to either Firefox or Opera as your main browser.

hey thanks. Opera has been my primary browser for about a year and I never really took note of that blue RSS icon. Is there a way in which I can view the screenshots that sometimes come with the articles and not see just the text?

Write your own parser that retrieves the screenshots and displays them?
Of course, there's probably a better way.

NEVER USE INTERNET EXPLODER!!!!!!!!! I use firefox and Ii get RSS feed for ticalc.org, it works great, but it won't tell you about the new programs available for download. You will have to ask ticalc.org to make a separate RSS feed for that if you want to view new programs without going to the site.

Oh, in case you didn't know, it's Internet Explorer, not Internet Exploder.

I have this great idea!
Instead of the current system of rss feeds for just the new files and news, what if each program had a feed associated with it?
People could then use the feeds to view information on their files.
Even better, they could use my awesome program (due out within a year!) to view statistics in a user-friendly GUI and lots of other cool features.

Okay, okay, so all I really want to be able to do is actaully have a nice XML structure to parse instead of spending way too much time with Ticalc's sloppy html. I am ashamed. :^(
