July/August 2005 Newsletter
Posted by Michael on 1 September 2005, 05:35 GMT

The July/August 2005 ticalc.org newsletter was published today, SEVERAL HOURS LATE, by our formerly-esteemed newsletter editor Jonathan. Yes, he specifically said not to razz him about his tardiness. Feel free to liberally do so.

If you are not yet subscribed to the newsletter and can no longer stand missing out on prodigal merriment, fanfare, verbiage, and all things ticalc.org, you can find instructions at the mailing lists page.

On the subject of calculator stability, how exactly COULD you crash the thing so hard that it becomes unusable?

Maybe by corrupting the part of Flash ROM that accepts and installs a new operating system, if that's possible. It would probably be difficult since I think I read at some point that that section of ROM is at least fairly well-protected.

That part is indeed well-protected, but you can get it to refuse to boot your calculator by trashing the certificates. This shows TI is more worried about their own $$$ being protected (certificate validity check) than their users' (keeping the calculator working).

They've got all the functionality to release a for-pay OS, but haven't done it. Maybe it's an abandoned idea.

No, the boot code won't let the OS boot.

So is the certificate area just as hard to access as the boot code, or is it in the same section of the memory where programs are stored?

<<So is the certificate area just as hard to access as the boot code>>
The boot code can theoretically not be modified. The certificate memory is protected by a software-driven protection, but this protection can be bypass.

<<is it in the same section of the memory where programs are stored?>>
No.

Designs for a TI related "Alexandrian library" are underway. Web coding, organizing files, etc.. Anyways - it's been a plan attempted before, but never with over 1Gb to work with. Here it is -
Send all tutorials for all languages involved with TI calc's, technical info, upgrades, etc to me via email (seklorean@yahoo.com). They'll appear in a section of the soon-to-be-public rbpx.org called "The Source" We will not be accepting calculator files unless they're documented or represent oncalc tutorials. Anyways, please respond. Also, submit links - i have over 1000 already organized, but don't mind more. Sweet, my tutorial for solar power upgrade is almost finished.
