ticalc.org FAQ Created
Posted by Michael on 7 October 2004, 02:34 GMT

We are overwhelmingly thrilled to announce the addition of the ticalc.org FAQ to our Help section. Morgan has spent hours painstakingly compiling the most frequently asked questions regarding ticalc.org and their answers. If you have a question about an aspect of the site, be sure to check this resource first.

Morgan also wishes to point out this question as something that everyone should read, because it occurs quite frequently. I have specifically not mentioned the topic of that question so that curiosity will force a large number of you to click the link. That answers the frequently asked question of whether the news editor is evil.

Morgan, are you going to "imporve" the quality of the FAQ's? <see Morgan's profile> ;)

I will be updating it as often as it needs. As far as the quality of the archives...lets just put it like this:

If it were up to me I have a list of around 5K programs that I would remove from the site right now, without question. Oh don't you just fear me being an archiver. As of right now, we still don't have nearly enough files rated to go ahead with implementing more stuff related to the rating concept.

Hope mine isn't on the list... lol

I do rate files as I use them/play them. I haven't done so in a while for the fact that I am busily programming a graphical Star Trek game (which there is a beta listed in the impending files...) I might start back up again playing and rating soon though...

I also rate every program I use, and everyone should do the same! I've got one program [Web Page link] which usually gets at least 20 downloads a week, and not even the minimum of 4 people have bothered to rate it!!! >:-(

BTW, it's *NOT* yet another quadratic solver...it factors trinomials too.

Really...My basic Othello gets 10-20 downloads a week and not even four rates yet.

I get more than 800 total downloads a week. I have a program that consistantly gets more than 60 downloads a week. Only one of my files has been rated at least four times, and that was only because it was featured. For the most part, people just don't rate files, even it they're being downloaded a lot. I attribute this to the fact that the majority of people who download stuff from our site are not registered users, and thus cannot rate files.

If you want the rating system to work, the best way to get feedback would be to force it. One such method would be to require signing in to download a program. And to have a cap on how many downloads the user can make such as 10* before they are required to rate every one. Then if the user only rates one every ten downloads you implement a date system where if the oldest download exceeds a week the user is ristricted from downloading until the files are reviewed. Some sort of webpage that lists downloaded files would be needed for the user to refer to so that they can rate them.
I know, it's a harsh system (and a lot of work) but for the quality of content on this site... it may be worth it.

Forced rating

He he, good idea. Or maybe some other way of persuading people to rate the programs, so they don't have to create an account to download. That would probably create more work for the ticalc people, and significantly reduce the downloads on the site. Maybe if you want to upload or update your own files, you have to have a certain amount of rating, or something. Also, why don't you post the list of files to cut? I'm curious to see it.

I thought of that, but its not a good idea. It would force users to register an account with us to download files and that is not good.

Perhaps a download-to-review ratio could be applied to IPs. This might not be affective with dialup users if the cap was more than 3 files, but it would be eventually.

Or the site could just go to a link that you have to rate it whenever you downloaded the program. Like when you download a program, and it says Open, Save, Cancel... when the .zip file opens, it should open a link to the rating site. Then it would ask you to rate the file you just downloaded.

The only problem with rating a file right after downloading is that the person who downloaded it hasn't even had the chance to put it on their calc. Generally, when I download a program, I like to try it BEFORE I rate it. Of course, the only problem with that is that I tend to forget to go back and rate it.

I think some sort of reminder might be effective. Something that tells you what you downloaded the last time you were on the site and asks nicely for you to rate/review them. Something like that could be done with cookies.

Forcing people to rate would probably scare people off. I think most people are like me and simply forget to rate files the next time they come back.

Another problem I have is that about 90% of all files I downloaded from this site were from before the rating system was up, so I would have a lot of work to do to catch up. I also can't remember all of them anymore.

Forced ratings

Yes, I believe something like this might get files more ratings... and cause ticalc.org to lose a very high number of users.

Yup... they added a " after the url... =P

Otherwise, I think it will come in handy for newcomers... most things described there, were already known by those who were long enough around here :)
