ticalc.org Completes IPO
Posted by Michael on 1 April 2004, 00:50 GMT

As many of you know, it costs quite a bit of money to run a website with the astounding level of traffic that we receive. In order to raise enough funds to cover next year's bandwidth expenses, we are pleased (actually, overwhelmingly excited) to announce that ticalc.org has just completed its initial public offering of stock.

We are now traded as a nonprofit corporation on the electronic communications network Archipelago. This allows for 24-hour, real time trades under the ticker symbol CALCS. Our initial public float was 1,000,000 shares at a par value of $0.25 each.

Because of unexpected demand, as of the time of this writing, we expect Isaac to place first in the list of the world's wealthiest people, with a net worth of $76 billion. Magnus is second with a current worth of $43 billion. We have created a stock ticker (quotes delayed 15 minutes) with the current ticalc.org price:

CALCS: $

We thank all of you for investing in us, and hope to continue to serve the community for many more years now!

I don't come here much anymore, but I just knew there would be an April Fools joke today. Interesting one this year.

I know this was a joke. My friend (who claims he's more into this stuff than I am, whatever) said he saw it last night but didn't think it was a joke. Something about not reading the entire article... ;)

Anyway, if you DO go public, I'd buy some shares. :D

This is good...

When I first read it, I thought that non-profit organizations couldn't be in the stock market. Maybe my lack of knowledge of this kind of stuff.

Well anyway, my second though was "Good. There's at least one site I don't have to worry about dissappearing."

Since the jokes about money. Then Ticalc.org apparantly has no money problems, so the second thought still applies.

When I first read it though, my first instinct was that something weird was going on with it. My lack of knowledge probably prevented me from thinking it was more or less real. Isn't ignorance wonderful?

Or, you could just look at the source and do the math. :)

Easier since the properties for the clock are restricted on my computer.

W's right...just set your computer clock ahead, and it will change the amount shown (if you hit reload). The javascript used in the article uses a function that gets the current time on the computer, and adjusts the amount accordingly. I think a smarter way would have been to use Java (not script) and have it get the time from another website. Then it would have been a *little* more believeable...

But then it would have been in an applet and personally, I think the JS looks better. With PHP/PERL they could do it without it...
But you're right, keeping it based on the server's time would make it more believable.
Maybe I'm just anti-Java ever since they took C++ away :)

I think a java applet would have been okay becuase it just would have been displaying text so it wouldn't take very long to load. I think java is cool because you're not just working on the one file all the time. You use so many more different classes and that makes it feel more object oriented.

Ummm...maybe because Java IS object oriented, and JavaScript ISN'T...just a thought....

Oh, I think I realize now what you are talking about. I remember a post a while back saying that your school doesn't teach C++ anymore, and that they teach java instead. Is that it?

They teach Java at our school, too, because they changed the AP test to Java. They still teach C++ before java for us, though.

The most advanced computers course in my school is "Intro to Computers". I still haven't figured out why they call it "intro". All we do in that class is pratice typing on these old MSDOS programs copyrighted in 1993. Rather than typing we spend our time tring to come up with new creative ways to crash the stupid programs. The tech guys can't figure out why the computers in that room are so prone to failure. :)

They can be longer. FSRCE is an example of a five-letter one, as is the closed-end mutual fund VFINX.
