Sid some people say that this was an early april fools prank? I'm thinking this is a joke on the idiot (former?) slashdot editor.

Why would this be april fools? they announced that they were hiring...so now they did...

I was thinking the same thing... I didn't quite understand his comment.

I was asking if comments where deleted because they where accusations of this being an april fools prank. And if my comment was deleted that would have been a confirmation.

I was a bit suspicious when the new staff member has a user id of 48 thousand + something and had never authored any programs.

I'll assume this is real.

Oh, okay, I gotcha. That makes sense, but I think it's real too. And if it's not, then I'm an April Fool. :)

I've written a bunch of programs for my own personal use on my 89, but I haven't published any, since most of them have either been for solving something in math, computer science, or something else for my own personal use. I also do a lot of programming with PHP and using PHP with mySQL databases (My website is an example, though it's hard to see the mySQL integration since that occurs in the scripting). I've also worked with Perl in modifying the Ikonboard script to create a mock battle-system, similar to a MMORPG, though currently it's down as I'm working on upgrading it to make it better.

And though my user id is relatively high, I have been coming here four about four and a half years, I just didn't have an account. I have downloaded a plethora of programs over the years, and perhaps one day I will submit some of my own.

So what if they anounced they where hiring. That could have been legit but also partly setup.

Michael actually mentioned that in the interview. There is no connection between Jon Katz and JonKatz.

What/who is JonKatz?

I hope that Jon Katz has not had to deal too much with questions based on sharing a name with the slashdot editor.

Yes, he is a former Slashdot editor. He was dismissed during a round of layoffs at VA. I think everyone got annoyed with some of JonKatz's writings, but as far as Slashdot editors go, he was far from the worst.

Anyways, several months ago, CmdrTaco and Hemos held a "forum" to ask questions on Slashnet. While a lot of important questions were skipped and never came up (like about the abuses of moderation on Slashdot), the question about JonKatz was asked and answered. I'm sure the log is available somewhere in Slashdot's archives. Take a look in the interviews section.

Correct that, this is of course not the same JonKatz. But yes, there was a JonKatz who wrote at Slashdot.

All I can't understand is how a staff member can be "qualified" (so to speek), and not have authored any files....I mean, isn't that a requirement? Guess not...Oh well...

Well, we were looking for someone to post/edit reviews. Yes having some general knowledge of calculaotr programming would be handy, but being fluent in English is by far more important. BTW, he does have a very wide range of programming skills.

But for the most part we looked at their English skills.

You know, if you look at the staff pages and bios, you'll find that there are more than a few staff members who dont program (at least for the calc) and some who aren't exactly calc fanatics (at least according to the bios).

Right... we've had great staffers, like Magnus, who have written great programs, like ZShell. We have also had great staffers, like Henrik, who have programmed nothing for calculators, or like nickd, whose greatest programming achievement was Wacky Fun Random Numbar Generator.

LOL! Isn't that the program that "tells you NickD's password?" I remember seeing that in one of his programs, downloading it to view the source, and well... I won't ruin it, but I really didn't think he'd put his password in there ;-)
