New search engine
Posted by Magnus on 21 March 2004, 12:28 GMT

Our new search engine, announced back when we migrated to the new server, is now finally up. This means you are no longer sent over to Google for all web searches on our site. It also means that you can once again specify which areas of the site you want to search (using Custom search).

For the technically interested, this search engine is based on the tsearch2 package from postgresql, which provides full text indexing with relevance ranking. Since it's included in the database, it integrates very efficiently with the other database parts of our site.

Now that you're done reading this, go rate some files! (1314 votes on 896 programs so far - get to work!)

Oh yeah! I remember that! The fr00ds were quite a memory, indeed. Heh, anybody remember that I figured out the password to some of their accounts and changed it? Ahh... good times :) We never found out who was doing that, did we?

Yeah, I remember that! It was back before I was really involved in TICalc...I don't think I even had a name registered back then...

Well, judging from your ID number, I think your account was created slightly before or around all the fr00d stuff. :)

Maybe just before, but I wasn't really involved...I don't remember it that well, but I DO remember being really confused when the "no_one guy replied to himself" because I wasn't really that attentive to the numbers... ;)

LOL- yeah... I was the first one to be "fr00ded" too, I think. I tried to search for his s/n (_no_one_2000_` or something like that), but the search engine doesn't take weird characters.

People who made names that were very similar to other names to try to pretend they were them. Example: Jrock7286 and Jrock7286_

Nothing firm, but if you can pick up some 1500-2000 new ratings, I'll increase the priority :-)

I don't know if I've even downloaded 1500-2000 programs... but I'd say 500 might be a good guess.

I didn't meen 1500 *per person*, though that would be cool (if it was till valid ratings) :-)

To tell you the truth, I'd say that if you implemented the ratings, the priority of rating files would be higher, because we would see the result of our "labor." Funny how that works: If we rate more, you'll implement, and if you implement, we'll rate more...oooh the irony of it all...

But an average rating will be meaningless until there are lots of ratings for the file. I think that the average rating should only show up for a particular file when the file has at least five votes. It should also tell how many people rated the file.

Absolutely. Say only one person rates "Vector Space" and thought it sucked, so gives it a 2. Every one else who downloaded it thought it was awesome, but never rated the file. Therefore the rating stays at 2. If the number of votes is listed, it results in a more accurate statistic.

Example:

100% of dentists prefer Aquafresh to Crest in a private survey*

* Survey based upon population of 2 dentists who may or may not have a degree in destistry.
