Sketchy Released for the 83+
Posted by Michael on 18 March 2004, 03:37 GMT

[Sketchy]The Center for Highly Interactive Computing in Education has been developing several educational applications for TI calculators. Sketchy is an animation studio for the 83+, opening a world of simple, frame-by-frame graphics. Sketchy has all of the basic drawing commands, a clipboard, and the ability to take a series of completed slides and "flip" through them. This app was authored by Jared Hodges and the famous, no-one-can-spell-his-last-name-correctly Dan Englender.

Also, they've written a program so you can spread cooties with your calculator, as if girls weren't bad enough already :)

Update (Joey): Sketchy has now been released for the TI-73. Act accordingly.

What IS the cooties program? I can't find my TI-83+ and VTI doesn't work with Flash apps...

I think you should be able to use the Flash Developer Studio's emulator to run the program, but i havent tried.

Cooties is intended to be used in a classroom setting (read: you need several calculators to make it worthwhile), to simulate the spread of a virus. Basically, each calculator running Cooties is a host, with some pre-configured degree of immunity to the virus. Once Cooties is running, you go "meet" other people and link with them ... if they have the virus, you'll have a chance to catch it, and vice versa.

To make things more interesting, there is also an incubation period, where symptoms won't be exhibited for some period of time after contracting the virus. Then you might continue to meet with others, not yet realizing you had the virus. Unfortunately, the current version of Cooties associates this incubation period with the host, rather than the virus. This will be fixed in future versions...

Hope that explains it well enough. You might also find the documentation for the Palm version helpful... it's linked to as this message's web page.

Yeah, it does sound cool. Now just imagine how you could edit the purpose of this program to be an actual virus. That would be a great way to get rid of ALL the people who constantly ask me "Can you get me mario on my calculator?" :-D

Nah... it would just screw up their calculator a little and maybe leave a message like "DON'T ASK ME TO GET ANY MORE GAMES ON YOUR CALCULATOR EVER AGAIN!" on the screen when you turn it on ;-)

For the TI-73? Does anyone actually own that calculator anymore?

A better question is probably: Did anyone actually own one in the first place? The TI-73 is newer than, say, the TI-86, and nevermind the "TI-73 Explorer" which (while being the exact same thing as the TI-73) is newer than the 83 Plus or 89.
