File Rating System
Posted by Magnus on 14 March 2004, 18:25 GMT
The first part of our shiny new file rating system has been finished. This is the part that will collect the rating of the community, and store it in our database. We do not yet create any reports based on the ratings information, but will eventually. As usual, you can only rate each file once.
So, please go ahead and rate a lot of files. That way the initial rankings will contain valid data once they go up. To rate a file, bring up its file information page, and select your vote.
Update (Joey): We didn't forget about Pi Day, but no one around here could come up with enough material for an article. I guess you could go read mine from last year, or even better, Andy's article from four years ago. Happy Pi Day.
Update (Magnus): The forms now show which end of the scale means good and which means bad.

A Thought

Here's a thought, which took time to logically develop: Charge people $.05 or $.10 per file to host it. That would cut down on trash uploaded and give ticalc.org's staff some salary, bringing in lots of dough. With that in mind, featured programs could be exempt, but those files already on the site, if the author can't be contacted, may pose a problem. A solution is to contact all available authors and make payment plans or delete files, and for the staff to pick which problem files to keep (those whose author can't be contacted). I know this is a free site, but I'm sure ALOT of people would actually pay for file hosting, I know I would.

I have an idea. What if there were more than one rating category for controls/UI, stability, graphics, etc. Then if a file got a really bad or good rating you'd have an idea of why.
The problem is that different types of files would probably need different categories. "Graphics" would make sense for games, but wouldn't apply to math programs, for instance.

I just noticed a way that it looks like you ALMOST celebrated pi day...when you vote for a file, look at the html location...just glancing at it, the endl looked like ".pi"...unfortunately, it is just ".pl"...can this be changed, redeeming the ticalc website once again? or if it is changed will it make that page unopenable? Hmmm....I'm going to check a website I know to see if there are any ".pi" extensions.... ;)
