SimCity Comes to the 83/83+
Posted by Michael on 12 January 2004, 04:04 GMT

[SimCity 83]You've purchased the original, 2000, 3000, and now 4K. You've stared at the screenshots of the 86 version. Now SimCity fanatics, you can finally play SimCity on the 83/83+ in Ion. Xavier LaRue has released SimCity 83. While the game does not yet have all of the features of the original version, it is a promising development. It features the basics: roads, R/C/I zones, police and fire stations, powerplants, et cetera. The user interface is certainly very slick.

There's an 85 version somewhere in the archives as well...

I wanted to make a simcity game for the 89. Then I realized, I don't have the skill, or knowledge to take on a program like this. So then I did not.

Wow. This is the second game that I've downloaded, and seen featured the next day. (The first was fire track). It really looks great-I'll have to play it!!! It's nice to see more 83+ programs featured for a change. Now we just need more featured 86 programs...

Yeah, just like we need more 86 hardware updates. Like that's gonna happen. It's really sad to see the demise of in my opinion (and seemingly a good percentage of the rest of the ticalc community) the best Z80 calculator.

I would keep making games like Dragon Warrior 86 and Chessmaster 86 and such, if it wasn't for the fact that noone wants 86 stuff anymore. The 83+ and 89 have been far more commercially successful (probably due to their expandability, etc.) Do not worry about 83+ featured progs though! Once I come out with TI-Coffee, the java-based language command line compiler to make 83+ apps, you'll all be happy :)

You have produced such great pieces of work that I believe you can make that new language. You are right tho, there isn't enough demand for 86 programs. I think you and Cullen Sauls are the only 86 asm game programmers.

I can't wait for TI-Coffee...sound promising, especially if 83+ usera can get into it. Good Luck!

I made a few 86 games, a Tic Tac Toe with AI, and Dark Forest, but they're complete pieces of junk compared with the work of Thomas Williamson and Cullen Sauls (well, even not compared with anything they're complete pieces of junk....).

Ahh... SimCity... That brings back memories.

It was about nine years ago. I must have been seven years old and my brother five. My dad bought the family a new Macintosh Performa 631CD. It came with a sampler CD that included the SimCity 2000 demo. My brother and I saved played that demo over and over. I think that we had about $20 in savings, and Mom paid us a quarter a day each for doing chores. The game cost $40 at that time, so it took us a little while to come up with the money for it. After ordering it, it took about a week to come in. That was a long week.

My brother and I spent hour after hour playing that game. The first five or so cities that I made where a complete disaster. On the demo, you begin with about $80,000,000,000. On the full version you only get $20,000, making the game much more difficult. I remember that my brother played it so much that he would have a new city with Arcologies every couple of days. A couple of times he asked me to delete about fifty of them because he was having a hard time finding the one he was looking for.

SimCity 2000 ... the best $40 I have ever spent!

Yay! I've never seen two articles in a row featuring programs for the 83/83+. This is a good trend.

I never did get into any Sim games (although I had a short fling with RollerCoaster Tycoon...fun game). Perhaps this will nab me over the the world of Simming.

Um, perhaps I'm missing something (the most likely case), but nothing happens once I build a small city. I got everything I need built, but I sit there and nothing happens. I even followed what the screenshow showed, and still nothing. The readme offers no help. Fooling with delays is not only useless, but confusing. And how does he get to that tax screen on the screenshot? I'm confused. Perhaps it's because I'm using an 83 instead of a plus, or maybe becuase I have no idea of how to play SimCity in the first place.

Hi,

Theoricaly you only have to build a central, at least the equivalent number of residence/commerce/industry and road around at least one side of each aera ( as I've done in the gif ) and you wait and it Sould upgrade. The 83 version is working as well as the 83+.

It doesn't work very well on the silver edition though. Everything happens really fast.

It works perfectly on the SE .. you should only not take a 20x20 if you want to get a game with a normal speed. As I said in the readme: the game is optimised for big map like 60x60 and over

I have an SE and I don't know about 83 or 83+ but on the 83+SE it runs normal (I like the 80X80 best as far as speed) but every once in a while half the screen will "freeze" and I have to go to TI-OS and back to the game and it's fixed. Does enyone else have this problem? It happens most when I hold [X,T,O,n] for "fastest speed" AI. I've only played SimCity once and that was several years ago on a computer. I don't know anything or remember anything though.

Somthing I wish this did have is desasters. That was fun. And moving cars. And train tracks. And trains. Maybe 3D? Just thoughts if anyone else has "wishes".

:)

That happens to me too, everything is squished on the left side of the screen and the right side freezes.

I had the squished screen problem also. I think that a split screen flag or something is being set somewhere in there.
