And the Winners are...
Posted by Morgan on 31 December 2003, 23:57 GMT

The results to the first annual Program of the Year (POTY) contest are in! Congratulations to the four winning programs and their authors! As before with the POTM winning programs, the programs have been given specialized screen shots and the authors do have ticalc.org's consent to display special graphics on their home page if they do so wish.

We look forward to next year's competition. Hopefully your program will be competing. POTY's are based on the featured program list and if you believe that we missed a program e-mail us at either filearchive@ticalc.org or news@ticalc.org. We will always take a look at your suggestions.

And of course...Happy New Year to all!

Looking at the results, I think that the polls should have been open longer. There wasn't enough votes for such an important award.

Actually the "No opinion" nearly won every time thats adds a god 40 or so votes to all of them.

so, then, there shouldn't have been an option for that. either vote in the poll or don't, just like i did...

Some people would feel obligated to vote, even if they don't have a choice. I dunno... it seems easier just to have a "no opinion" option, to me.

Yes-otherwise people might vote randomly for programs they knew nothing about because they didn't want to NOT vote.

Why isn't there more votes?
Nearly 100 for 68k... Vote!

"Actually the "No opinion" nearly won every time thats adds a god 40 or so votes to all of them."

Most people probably couldn't decide, or maybe they hadn't used all of the programs before to make decision. Anyway, they didn't really have that much time to fit all of the polls in.

It's more likely that an indivudual didn't have the calc for that poll, thus voting "no poinion" would be best suited. I guess there could have been a "don't own that calc...but "no opinion" is more universal.

There were exactly 0 featured TI-82 programs in 2003, so what should there have been in the vote? A "No opinion"-only vote doesn't make much sense. :-)

It was really fun making the screenshot for Phantom Star...got pretty adicting. I would really like someone to make some external levels fo it!

BTW...I have a copy of the original animated screenshot that you uploaded with it if you wanting it.

The new screenshot is fine :) One thing I noticed - the 83 version is featured, while the 83+ version is not. This is the same for the "Dr Mario" game that Joel Seligstein and I wrote (except the 83+ version is featured and the 83 version isn't). Is there a reason for this?

They always put the "featured" icon on only one version of a featured program.

Yep! That's actually done to encourage people to upload their files in groups and request links to the other calc directories that the program will work for. Thus the featured icon will be shown in all the directories.

If anyone wants this done to any of their files, you know what to do...just send me an e-mail at filearchive@ticalc.org

Yeah...I just checked it out!

Sionce the contents of the teo .zip file are the same the stats could be merged into one file, the featured one, and then a link could be added to the other calc's directory. It decreases the number of programs you have but it saves space on the server and is more efficiant if you ever update it because you only have to send in the one file and it will change both.

If anything I'll just put a copy of the POTY image on the 83+ version.

That is correct. Having a poll for "Dodger" or "No opinion" would be kinda pointless.

Technically, since Jigsaw 86 was not featured until 2003 it could have been put into the poll, but since they are both by me, it really does not make a difference (even though I think Jigsaw 86 was better). :)

Too bad Image Studio was not featured, I would have liked to see if it even made a dent against the VTI votes (I doubt anything could beat VTI).

Anyways, thanks to everyone that voted for Dodger! :)

Haha, I'll share the crown if you want :)

Image studios never were a big hit for calculators unlike GB. Graphics Studio floundered immediately when we put it up.

I never understood that either, I found Graphics Studio an immense help. I used it extensively for anything that used tilemaps and did most of my sprites in it since the Assembly Studio sprite editor was hard to use for sprites larger than 16x16 and you could not save the graphics for different export format.

Like I said, it was no big deal but I thought for those that wanted the ability to make calculator images (this includes BASIC programmers) it would be worth mentioning. Plus news was slow (maybe 1 item every 2 weeks?) so it seemed like _something_ that could be interesting when nothing was being posted.

Also, I know it would never beat VTI but a green icon just looks spiffy. :)

I have CalcGS, and it is helpful for sprites and stuff, but the problem is-- if you program for C, then you have to change all the hex to fit the C format (which takes a while). I made a little Javascript program to help me out with that. CalcGS is obviously the better program, but it just needed more output formats.

There are only 2 things I had trouble with:
1) Getting sprites that needed a mask was hard. I made a small program to generate the binary and put a mask for all the non-white parts, but you still have to go through and add the mask bits for white parts you want masked. If it had the option of making a sprite masked it would have been the best when I was making Mega Man 86.
2) The tilemaps associated with a tileset could not be moved, so once you made a tilemap it could not change directory or be moved easily. Made organizing a pain in the butt.

It was still a huge timesaver, though, and better than anything I could have made at the time.

Well it was adapted from our CGB version, but we lost the source to version 1 so that's why we never fixed anything else.

Sounds like what happened to Matt Johnson when I asked him about taking over his Image Studio. He lost the source so I had to start from scratch code-wise.

We started on a verion 2 from scratch for the CGB with .NET way back when it was first released, and so had no real use for the old source and several computer changes later....

Featured Programs Use
ti_is_good_++  Account Info

They use only featured programs because those are supposed to be the best. Non-featured programs can become featured programs if you let the staff know about it. If they agree with you and they missed the program, it becomes featured.
