And the Winners are...
Posted by Morgan on 31 December 2003, 23:57 GMT

The results to the first annual Program of the Year (POTY) contest are in! Congratulations to the four winning programs and their authors! As before with the POTM winning programs, the programs have been given specialized screen shots and the authors do have ticalc.org's consent to display special graphics on their home page if they do so wish.

We look forward to next year's competition. Hopefully your program will be competing. POTY's are based on the featured program list and if you believe that we missed a program e-mail us at either filearchive@ticalc.org or news@ticalc.org. We will always take a look at your suggestions.

And of course...Happy New Year to all!

I missed it, but I think I know what that message said ;-) Anyway, did MegaMan 86 ever receive a POTM? I can't remember.

I wonder what the message said...but I guess it does not really matter. The Mega Man 86 demo won a POTM, but POTM was stopped before the final version came out.

Well, it was a pretty cool program. That doesn't surprise me that it got POTM. Oh, you'd probably remember the message... think back a year or so... it was all he said. :-D At least he was supporting your game. LOL

BTW, his constant "advertising" for the game was actually what prompted me to download it and check it out (I had to use VTI, though). It is pretty cool.

Yeah... it was actually featured originally because of the sweet screenshot, though it probably would have been newsworthy anyway. Asking us to feature your own file actually makes it slightly less likely that we will.

I think the idea is that you would nominate other programmer's work, not your own. Having someone else email ticalc saying your program is good might suggest that it deserves to be featured. Suggesting that your own program is good just wastes their time (would you trust a review of a game written by its own author?).

Exactly-programs nominated by people *other than the author* are more likely to be good.

Yep! Of course something that has been on ticalc.org for some time might be harder to convince us. But I personally think that the standard for making programs featured has been increasing ever since ticalc.org has started featuring programs, almost to the point where it is indimidating to even try. We need to talk about this and see if the "standard" is too high and if it should be lowered.

Actually we are not allowing any more quadratic or guess the number programs in unless they offer something new for the calc they are programmed for. We have 500+ for each and we seriously don't need anymore.

Really? I could've sworn I'd asked in an e-mail or on the comments of when I'd uploaded the original file...speaking of which, is there any way to change the file descriptions? I found some gramatical errors in some that I uploaded and I'm that kinda guy, not wanting to have crappy l33t or anything like that to do with my stuff, ya know? And I don't wanna have to go through adding it to the queue again ¬_¬

Yeah, but in reuploading it that means there's someone who has to do some work on your guys' side to do that updating as well, rather than just me, the author of the program, updating my program's description right then and there without having to wait for anyone to update on the archiver's side...Just wanting to save you people some work is all V_V

I'd assume it would be more work for them to edit it manually. They upload tons of files daily, so it's probably a very quick routine to them, by now.

Now, I have been wondering for quite some time now... does your screen name mean "Mickey Mouse Fan" or "Michael McElroy Fan?" Just wondering.. :)

It takes considerably less time for me to update a program than edit the description myself.

I believe at one point in time the idea of allowiong author's to edit their descriptions was toyed with...but the whole site policies kicked in and the idea of having people change their descriptions without the change being approved by an archiver would be potentially bad.

And if we did have it go through to be checked by the archiver, it would be no different from an update besides the fact that it shows up on the front page.
