More New Features: Featured Programs
Posted by Nick on 30 October 1999, 00:35 GMT

We have yet another exciting feature at ticalc.org! Every time our archiving staff comes across a program of merit, it's added to ticalc.org's Featured Programs. Every month, the featured program list will become the nomination list for the Program of the Month (POTM) and that month's POTM winners will be voted on by our users from the list. Featured programs also have a new color for the fileinfo icon (). As you can probably see in the recent updates list, six programs have been selected by us to be the first featured programs. This month, POTM will be selected the old way, but starting at the end of next month, the POTM will be determined by the method mentioned above. This ensures that no program will be accidentally selected twice for POTM, and it also ensures that TI-BASIC programs will be better represented. If you feel that we missed a program, or you have any questions or comments regarding the featured programs, please email featprog@ticalc.org.

Wrong! Nick and I police the news boards, and neither of us are programmers, so that had nothing to do with it.

I was the one who checked the rankings feature as it was added--but that was the extent of my involvement it in. :)

Just think about how many possible icons possible. File description is one, screenshot is another, animated screenshot is third, new one today. What if it has both screenshot and Animated Screenshot? That is another, if it happens. If a file has been reviewed, they will make a icon for that. Blah, blah. But regardless of how upset I seem, I'm NOT AT ALL. Sorry, but I can't sound happy about talking nonsence. I like Ticalc.org and the point is are you planning on making more Icons anytime soon.

What would be the point of having an animated screenshot and a regular screenshot on the same file? The only thing I have to agree with on you is the icon for files with reviews. It would be nice to include the review of the file at the same time as the description, screenshot, and contents. I don't think the reviews section gets a lot of attention, myself. When I wasn't a reviewer, I never went to the ticalc.org reviews, I went to Dim-TI's, where they have screenshots right next to lengthy descriptions. That's more of the thing I'd like to see on the site, putting all of the information together. Maybe ticalc.org could implement at least a link to the reviews from the file info page, if the particular file has been reviewed.

How many times cane you say "features" in an article or title? It gets annoying after a while.
Of course since everyone can't have an excellent program, you will hear complaints after a while. But, on the other hand, it allows users to immediately identify programs that are the "Cream of the Crop", ones that should definitely be looked at. Slick idea, ticalc.
Now where'd I put my 68k ASM books? Oh well...

I generally don't insult people on in the matter of speech, but today...
I don't know many crops that are creamy... I've heard of crocks before... although I guess you could cream a crop... but that would be cream of a processed crop... oh, well... yet another useless post of mine...
It should be quite some time before I begin uploading programs to be regarded with such esteem. (I don't even post my progs onto my web page, which is undermaintained to say the least... is that even a word?) Um... I'm just takin' up space, aren't I? I should probably stop... I'll learn to deal with registers soon... or maybe not
in any case, yeah... it's great that TiCalc does... good stuff. Maybe if they want to please the teenage crowd with IQs below that of a hairbrush (I hear hairbrushes are pretty smart), they could make a rainbow-colored icon for all programs they consider "gay"... as worthless as that term is... happy programs... funny... an inanimate object has a sexual preference... well... it seems that calculators do... too many linkport and flashrom jokes... um... yeah... I just wanted to talk about creamy crops

Off topic: In 1990 the Guiness World Record for 'World's fastest computer' was a water cooled gigantic thing, it went at 200mhz, and had 32 megs of RAM. Today, even the fruity iMac is *GASP* more powerful than that.

Hey, the iMac's G4s go at 550 MHz and with twice the efficiency as a Pentium at the same speed... the fastest pentium I know is 700 MHz... I don't think you have any right to say "even the fruity iMac is faster" as if that's substandard
just one question... did you learn about apples in public education? That often explains students' hatred towards Apple... as schools aren't intelligent in that respect. Get to know the keyboard shortcuts (like being able to type special characters with the option key instead of remembering a numerical code) and you've got yourself a pretty convenient and FAST computer

Actually, the G4 is only 500Mhz, I think, but it's three times as efficient as the pentium III's. Most people think that apple's are bad because they use the ones in public schools. Try using a 9 year old IBM and see how you like it. The newer macs are hella tight, and they can run all PC software, the compatibility isn't relevant anymore.

Yes, but can the PC emulator run the original Digger? (only 1984 PCs can run it) How about the thousands of DOS games that run perfectly on an old 486DX2/50? I guess the computer is too fast to slow down.

BTW, I really, really, really hate At-Ease. If I have to use a macintrash, at least give me a real OS!

Unreleated and intresting fact: Most mac haters only hate At-Ease.

Windoze 98 sucks! DOS RULES!!!

Like I said, the school's computers are wha tpeople hate. I use a mac at home, but I won't use those 9 year old school computers with at ease or foolproof either. those things stop the computers from working. Also, I agree that the I-mac's are fruity (as are the I-books), but they still work really well. If you want to run old IBM games that don't need a processor, wouldn't you rather be able to use a real OS when your done? New G4's rule, they're faster than the pentium III even when they're running the emulation program. you get the best of mac and all of pc crap too. hmm... wasn't this page supposed to be related to calculator stuff? well, as long as no one cares that I advertise macs on here... I'm not affiliated with Apple by the way, really...

I think TICALC is getting better and better.

On the topic of Macs Vs Pcs

just to tell you, the iMac is the worst PC you can buy(THAT IS NEWISH)
I love Pcs, Windows 98 Plus!
I do admit that Windows is VERY unstable and annoying, but they r much better user interface.
Most people I talk to say the reason they like macs is there interface!
every thing the mac does the pc does better, to copy u have to go to the menu at top!
to eject the disk you have to drag it to reclycling bin!
the Finder thing is way to stupid to comprehind, and you can make it where a windows is just in part of the screen, but the thing at top is ALWAYS there unless u close it with the dumb finder!
Macs may be stable and fast, but they have a bad interface, not many games, annoying, and more!
Pcs are user freindly, even more user freindly, like all games are for the PC, well ok, its not the most stable OS ever but who cares!!!! ITS TEN BILLION TIMES BETTER!

On the origanal topic, I am trying to learn learn Asm so i can make a better sound prgm for my TI-86. I am also going to try to make a better Shell(like rascall, which i find not as stable as ashell) that acts like Ashell, never messes uP! not once!
and i am gonna try to make a Maze3D game, unlikly but i might try, unless someone else makes one b4 i start.(shoting)
And for those wackos who dont care about memory, i am gonna try to make an EXPERIMENTAL(NOT FOR REAL USE) Shell that you go to a icon on wall to start prgm, so you can walk around and sit at a table to play a game or run a prgm.
for now these r just ideas but i think they will turn out nicely(the 1st shell and the sound prgm)

The virtual PC, which exactly simulates any PC on a mac, will run windows faster on an I-mac than a real PC with the same speed. To copy something on a mac, press "command C", just like ctrl c in windows. If you meant duplicate, that's command d, or you can just opt. drag to a different window. To eject a disk, command shift 1 or command e or command y or command delete. or you can drag it to the trash. learn about what your dissing before you do, EV9093. I will agree, however, that if you only want to be able to run old pc games and you don't care about your interface, you should probably use a PC :p

Instead of remembering inane commands on a Macintosh, it is much easier to push a button on a PC to eject the disk. It is also much easier to use the right mouse button instead of remembering other commands. Also, the Mac's processor may very well be three times faster than a Pentium !!! at the same MHz but with the operating system's horrible memory management and cooperative multitasking it sucks up and speed you may have gained from the processor. AMD Athlon, anyone?

Oh, sorry, you're wrong: the fastest x86 processor is in fact the _Intel_ Coppermine 733. see the above URL.

Actually.... the fastest _type_ of processor is the Athlon. When comparing the Intel Coppermine 733 and the Athlon 700 the Coppermine wins in overall system performance with 298, but the Athlon 700 got a 297... not very far behind. Also notice that it's a 733 against a 700. If it was a 733 against a 733 the Athlon would win.

I agree that FoolProof sucks.... the cool thing is is that the tech ed. teachers know less about computers than most of the kids in my school (that's sad really) so we all know the foolproof pass so we get access to everything on the mac and I _still_ think that macs suck. Don't say any of that 9 year old macs suck get a G4 crap because we _have_ all G4s... the only good thing about the G4s is the fact that they can emulate windows.

Foolproof is not just for macs, you can get it for Windows systems too (my school has it). I think that Foolproof for Windows is much more annoying than the one for the mac, because on the mac there is not much to do other than schoolwork. The Windows version is very stupid in some ways, like you can't get to volume control from the taskbar (which is stupid in itself), but you CAN get to volume control from the start menu. You also can't even move a simple icon around on the desktop!

The main problem with macs is that there are few good games for them.

AMD Athlons are the best CPUs, especialy when they get faster memory and a better motherboard chipset.

Down with foolproof!
I use (own) a PC (K6-2) with Win 95

Amen to that! I hate At Ease!!! I used to hate Macs but my cousin got a Powerbook G3 333...it's pretty cool looking. Anyway, I like to use the new Macs, they are pretty fast. I hate our schools old PowerPCs though. Our School bought a few G3s and a gazillion Imacs...they just like to jump on the applewagon. Anyway, enough bla bla bla for now...

Yes, I tried Digger on my Pentium 133. You get game over in less than two seconds.

However, is Pentium III 700 faster than this water cooled supercomputer from 1990? I am not sure, because in paralell architectures megahertzes are not the main issue, but it is paralellity grade.

The fastest current computer was build by about 9000 Pentium Pro processors.

BTW, digger was remade, and runs on all PC's. http://www.digger.org/

Also, I think it's software that makes stuff fast. Suppose someone wrote an extremely efficient OS that ran fast on 286's. If it could replace Winblows, apple would stop claiming they're 2x faster.

I agree with that. If someone could write a good OS, similar to the mac's =), I think that it would make the IMB's good. I'm not sure though, I think that MAC's being faster at the same Mhz is something to do with the processor. However, I would probably get a PC with mac os on it, because of compatibility issues (everyoe uses pee cees) windows really does suck.

Most games are writen for Windows, which is why neither other OSs nor MACs are as good. If games were compatible with all systems and OSs, then Less people would use windows, and/or more people would take time to choose what OS they want rather than getting Windows. It also couldn't hurt to advertise OSs besides Windows.
