Tezxas - ZX Spectrum Emulator for 89
Posted by Nick on 29 September 1999, 23:24 GMT

Samir Ribic, previously unknown to the TI community, has released an interesting program called Tezxas for the TI-89. This program allows you to emulate ZX Spectrum programs on the 89. It comes with some samples, too. Don't know what the ZX Spectrum is? Click here for more information. It's easy to port these programs to the 89; the documentation in the program helps explain how. This is reminiscent of when the Chip8/SChip8 emulators were released for the 92, the 92 Plus and the 85.

Ok, Why are the games all dark? And where is that program to port our own games?

Thanks

Elliot

The games I supplied (except Urban upstart) are dark simply because they were dark on the original :).

In a few days I will upload MAKESNAP and keyboard remapper (currently I convert it from VCL to Windows API to make it smaller in archive).

Version 1.1 now uploaded to www.void.demon.nl
It contains MAKESNAP and REMAPER.
Also, there is zoom option for watching
hardly visible screen portions, some bugfixes
and screen reverse option.

And hurry up. Codemasters (Dizzi owner) yesterday denied copy permission for their old games, same like Psygnosis two months ago. So, it is possible that Dizzi games will be erased from WOS.

Fortunantelly, about 50 software companies allowed coping, and the most still do not claim.

Will this (or any other emulators forthcoming) work on the TI-92+ ?
I have a vast library of Spectrum, Amstrad and C64 games that I would love to be able to play on my 92+.

I planned to port it to TI92+ too
(classic TI92 has no enough memory).
TI92+ will be even better, due to bigger
screen and better keyboard layout.
However, I have not it at home, only
Rusty's emulator. If you permit me to violate copyright ...

We all do for cross-calc programming -- technically, you're barely even using the TI-written ROM - just the platform - and it's not like you're using TI's products without paying, IMHO.

At the very least, you could make the 89 version run on the 92+ by only changing the key reading routine. I got pokemon running on the 92+ without ever testing it, although it only uses the 89-sized portion of the screen. You could pop out a port in under an hour, and Tom Corvazier (Street Fighter 2) has an 89-on-92+ emulator partially working.

I have realized thet the 89's screen is not fully used. Well, yes, i know that 128x96 is proportionate to the origional screen size, but i just think that why not use all of the screen and instead of having 4 pixels mixed into 1. All that has to be done is to have some reigons have clusters of 4 and some clusters of 2.
(i know this is unnesscery and the image is distorted, so don't bother pointing that out.)

Has any one tried this thing yet. It SUCKS big time. You can't read the word and the graphics a like staring at a pile of dog CRAP. Thats pretty much what it is. If you don't beleive me try it your self.

I noticed this also. I only tried Klore, though. I found it quite humorous; in the manual, it said that the graphics weren good because they hadd to reduce every four pixels to one. Seems like they could have done a bit better...

Have you got an idea how to make it better and
retain acceptable speed?

The only alternative to remapping to scarcer resolution is showing only a part of screen,
making it impossible to play almost all games.

However: if only 15% of Spectrum games would
look nice on TI89 (and I belive that will be more), this means that we will have more than 1000 games
on TI89, which is 10 times more than we have now.

Of course, on TI-92+ will be better situation,
because it has bigger screen and QWERTY keyboard.

Would it be possible to do simple mipmapping (level of grayscale=# of on pixels)?

I converted a screenshot from Dizzy into 128x96 4-gray picture using Photoshop - it looks so much better than just b&w!

I hope that implementing grayscale won't affect speed significantly. Grayscale will make picture look much much better, you'll see! You can also make an option that allows to show a part of original screen and scroll it - this might help in many games.

You just don't realize what this guy have done. I'm a former Spectrum user. Now I can play hundreds of my favorite games on TI89!. The emulator still needs some improvement of course.
