7th Grade Student Overclocks TI-89 A Bit Too Much
Posted by Nick on 24 September 1999, 23:10 GMT

WALLA WALLA, WA - On Wednesday, a seventh grader attending Lincoln Middle School accidentally overclocked his TI-89 "a bit too much," sources say.

Glowing TI (thanks to DOZIEDO)

The student, named Bryant Kramss, replaced the C9 capacitor with one made of pure radium for reasons unknown. According to family members, Bryant "felt he had an innate need to make his TI-89 three kilohertz faster" by replacing it with the insanely unstable element.

As noticeable in the picture, taken in supposedly total darkness, the 89 has obtained a pale greenish glow. Rumors that the modified 89 does 100! in under a picosecond are unconfirmed.

Bryant was admitted to Holy Family Hospital in Walla Walla on Thursday morning after he happened to notice the growth of a small tumor and an extra arm. He was then given prompt chemotherapy and he is now in serious condition. He is expected to fully recover very soon, as the dosage of radiation was not severe enough to cause any permanent damage.

The 89 is currently under the FBI's custody, which is having tests run on it. The source of the radium is still unknown.

wow ! It may be a fool ! I'm not fool enough to put radium in my calc !
I'd rather add a G4 450Mhz instead !

Hey yeah! Let's try to sound smart by saying words like "programming," and "G4!" Hehehehehehehehehehe............real smart. Anyone with above an 83 in 6th through 9th grade needs to get a few things:
1) A swift kick in the butt.
2) Parents that won't spoil them.
3) A swift kick in the head.
4) Yet another swift kick in the head.
5) A TI 83 and give their good calculator to some one who would actually use it for what it is intended to do.

I got my 85 in seventh grade..... having an 86 in eighth wouldn't hurt either.
Besides, the 83 sucks :)

I am sorry but i must object to your comment. I am a professional burger flipper at my local Mcdonalds restaurant. I make a whole $5.15 an hour. I worked for a whole 3 weeks to buy my 89. I am a high school freshman. Um, so there and stuff.

No, they should get those ultra-kewl slime calculators that they give as premiums in Kids Meals at Burger King. Four-functions rock, man.

Instead of a TI-83, why not give them something a little better suited? Like a TI-73? Cuz aren't those specially made for middle-schoolers?

I'd like to let you know that I paid for my Ti-89 myself. I had to ref about 6 soccer games every Saturday and Sunday for about 3 weeks to get my TI-89 and it has helped me a LOT. I'm glad I got it. Why not get a calculator thats above a TI-83? As long as you use them and know how to do a lot of the stuff the calculators provide why shouldnt you use them? I haven't wasted my TI-89.

All the more power to you. I had to ref soccer games as well to earn my TI-89. I don't regret the work i put in.

Personally, I think that younger people don't need a 83 or above, but if they want to waste their money on a calc that will be oudated and most likely ( middle schoolers aren't too bright you know ) lost, I say go for it. TI could use the extra income to develop better calculators for the people who actually know how to use them.

When writing this, I asked Phil for the name of a total dork that he knew in real life.

For some reason, this name sprung instantly to mind :)
