7th Grade Student Overclocks TI-89 A Bit Too Much
Posted by Nick on 24 September 1999, 23:10 GMT

WALLA WALLA, WA - On Wednesday, a seventh grader attending Lincoln Middle School accidentally overclocked his TI-89 "a bit too much," sources say.

Glowing TI (thanks to DOZIEDO)

The student, named Bryant Kramss, replaced the C9 capacitor with one made of pure radium for reasons unknown. According to family members, Bryant "felt he had an innate need to make his TI-89 three kilohertz faster" by replacing it with the insanely unstable element.

As noticeable in the picture, taken in supposedly total darkness, the 89 has obtained a pale greenish glow. Rumors that the modified 89 does 100! in under a picosecond are unconfirmed.

Bryant was admitted to Holy Family Hospital in Walla Walla on Thursday morning after he happened to notice the growth of a small tumor and an extra arm. He was then given prompt chemotherapy and he is now in serious condition. He is expected to fully recover very soon, as the dosage of radiation was not severe enough to cause any permanent damage.

The 89 is currently under the FBI's custody, which is having tests run on it. The source of the radium is still unknown.

But then I sold it in 11th grade when my Teacher said "This is too advanced, it is not fair to the other students", so I bought a TI-89.

I bet half of you little kiddies don't even know how to code a program.

Actually, if a teacher teaches the math correctly, it would not matter what type of calculator that you(we) have. I am taking calcalus right now. My instructor checkes for method, not answers. One guy in my class made 10 points higher that another and he did not have a single answer right. The 89 is good to check your answers but that is it...(I still would not give it up)

You kiddies also proabably don't even know what a variable is and how to program on a calculator or even a computer.

What do you mean "Why do you need anything more, unless you just can't do the math?" Don't you understand the deep psychological dependancy these calculators have developed with us owners? If we weren't to buy the latest calc every time TI came out with one, they would sit on the shelves like so many orphaned children begging us to pick them up, comfort them by taking them with us everywhere, feed them by filling their memory's with fun games, making them proud when they do beat their casio counterparts at simply polar graphing, and teaching them what calculators not to hang out with...then we would be no better than those people who do calculations by hand! Away with such fiendish thoughts! How could you say that with my brother's TI-83+ and my TI-86 lying so close to the computer?

p.s.
Does any one know if the plans for that TI-89 enhanced with Ra 88 will be released?

Ooooh ... Crappios ... their scientific calculators are okay, but the graphing calculators more-or-less stink ... they're like TI-80s on crack. And the programming language is just way too funky. I asked for a TI-something or other graphing calculator, but my dad had to be a cheapskate and give me the $40 Casio calculator. I had it for a couple months, hated it, opened my backpack and found it missing, was totally relieved and went back to my TI-30x until just recently when I got my TI-82 *cuddles calculator*

Well, there are some high school classes offered where calculus is a prereq, and the teacher(s) would rather have you spend your time figuring out how to solve a given problem than working through the calculus.

Also, remember the TI-89/92/+ are not perfect. There are integration and equations that these calculators cannot solve, and the person using them would have to relieze that the answer the calculator gave them is not the correct one.

Besides, the TI-92/+ is great for programming, since it has the QWERTY keyboard, while the TI-89 is just as powerful but some teachers don't relieze this because it looks just like any other calculator. :)

Everyone in my AP Calculus class has a TI-83. That's pathetic. And none of them know how to use it and when I tell them to read the manual they complain about how big it is. We have to waste time so the teacher can show then how to graph a stupid function and find the limit and help them with their idiotic syntax error caused by leaving out parenthsis and whatnot. This is good casue I can kick back and play Mario-89. This is bad cause I like math and I h8 wasting time like this. Whew! What a rant(and notice the proper punctuation).

They were lending Casios to those who couldn't afford one, but I decided that I would probably need one next year anyway, so I bought a TI89. The difference in power is amazing. The teacher is telling everyone else how to graph a simple function, and I am playing Phoenix, or doing physics problems. I read parts of my manuel, but I mainly figure things out myself. It isn't that hard if your curious and aren't afraid to try things.

I find the best way to get radium is to take the Americum(radioactive material) in smoke alarms and use my particle accelarator. this tends to drain the power at the nuclear power plants though. I also find that a fair amount of nuclear material can be passed through the wire of the power plant right to your home! Love how that works. my dogs 6th leg started growing today.
