TI-Graph Link for Linux on Slashdot.org
Posted by Nick on 20 September 1999, 06:26 GMT

Slashdot.org recently posted a news item under their "Ask Slashdot" column asking if software exists to link a TI to a Linux box. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time I've seen something like this brought up outside of the TI community, which I find to be pretty neat. Anyone who wants to email the person who asked the question can click here.

Man how come I never heard of this "news for nerds" site, I must get out too much. Anyway, I saw this first at calc.org, you guys should give them credit.

I don't see it there -- maybe they took it off?

Would people please think before they post, especially if they are from calc.org or wherever most of these silly posts seem to be comming from. I for one would stop by more if some of the noise dissapeared from these newsgroups.

I'm not from calc.org and this is my first post so I'm sorry if I didn't say something profound and meaningfull to satify your thirst for important calculator news. This is a discussion and sometimes the topic does wander.

It tends to wonder quickly into a certain rather boring and repetitive direction...

I'd take a look back at the comment that started this thread.

Even if it were correct it was pretty pointless minutiea.

And it wasn't.

I have had a ton of experience with this particular subject, and I would like to let all the programmers out there know that this sucks!

There are several linking programs around, mostly for the 82/85, but a couple for the 83 as well. But where does the 86 come in?? Its the coolest z80 calc around, but nobody has written a link program for it. I would do it myself, but I have yet to learn how to use the com ports on a linux system. I already have the gui of a PC -> 86 link program in C using the gtk+ widget set.
If anyone is interested in helping me with this project, email me.
If anyone has more information reguarding linking programs, email me about that too.

hmm.. the person who asked may very well be some 12 year old who made up a "Hello World" program in Basic and wants to save it on his computer. lol

It is nice that you guys posted his question, though - i'm sure he'll get the help he needs. BTW, how did you find this, Nick? Just stumble upon it?

Actually I mentioned it to him in passing - just happened to stumble on it. I didn't really expect him to make a big deal about it on ticalc.org, I thought he'd be interested, but not the whole calculator community ;)

Oh .. and here I am all along thinking Nick is doing his job, searching for interesting news to post. And he ends up getting it from Adam. Bah!! :-)

Hehe, part of our job is to post the news people tell us, you know. ;) Actually, I try to stick with posting just news... but um, this item that Nick posted is nice, too. (j/k, Nick.)

Yeah, I was kinda hoping someone would see this and say, "You know, I'm a Linux programmer and I've been thinking the same thing. I'm finally going to start coding this thing." Oh well, so much for that idea. (Still hoping for the kernel module, though, hehe.)

Heh-heh. I still want to see people try to code httpd's for their calculator :) That would be something interesting to try. $100 for a portable http server is something pretty neat imo (just to say your calculator serves up pages at www.bluecalx.com or whatever), but you'd also have to worry about memory constraints.
Just my $50/2,500.

Heh. Heh. You are very funny Nick.

If you want your calculator to run as a web server, you would have to:

1) Be able to use an alternative source of power besides batteries, since it would be on all the time.

2) Be able to hook some kind of T1 into the link port. The TI-Graph Link only transfers at 9600 kbps and homemade links are somewhat faster, but still - no where even near the speed of lets say dual-channeled ISDN.

bluecalx.org is not exactly going to generate 10 gigs of transfer per day here :) You don't need a T1 or anything - nick just said a server to show it could be done, not a reliable one that people would use to host the next slashdot :P

They measure transfer in GIGS now?!

For real sites they do, maybe not this one. :)

LOL, we have been measuring our data transfer in gigabytes (just please don't tell our uplink! hehe). Anyway, many popular sites measure in gigs. Hey, I mean, if /we/ do, just think of what other people must be getting. ;)

From the web stats page:

"Data transferred: 773,601 Mbytes"

You measure in Megabytes. :)

BTW - any site can measure their data transfer in gigabytes. It just depends on what the amount is. :)

What's the point of showing it can be done, if its not useful or anything? :)
