Tetris Attack ported to TI-86
Posted by Kirk on 11 June 1999, 20:53 GMT

Aaron Curtis has ported Tetris Attack to the TI-86. The game was originally written by Brandon Sterner, and it is a TCPA game. Incidentally, the game just won the 82 and 83 Program of the Month awards for the month of May.

Couldn't the 82 version be played using YAS's emulation before the port?

Well for some reason it won't work on YAS. I'm not sure why. It might be because I used the apd buffer and required interupts to be turned off. I know most games aren't that way. Aaron ported the game because it just would crash the emulator.

I agree with your analysis. For some reason, YAS will randomly crash when running certain programs that make use of the APD buffer. Other examples include my 82 port of BoulderDash and Spaze Invaders.

Tetris Attack did have some rom calls which are not supported in YAS (OP-related). ATM I'm not sure what the deal is with the apd buffer causing crashes, although things that appear randomly like that are usually caused by problems with my interupt routine.

Why is it called "Tetris" Attack? Doesn't "tetris" refer to four? In this game you match blocks of _three_...then, again, I guess only the makers of the GameBoy version would know the answer.

It's called Tetris Attack because Nintendo needed a popular name to market it. They did the same with games like Mario Kart and Mario Paint. Squaresoft also did something similar with their gameboy Final Fantasy games (which are actually games from the Saga and Secret of Mana series).

Me

I see a few minor errors in the 'endless' mode. Since it is a port, I see where these mistakes my happen to come in. I think the cursor moves way to fast. And also the screen slides a bit fast also. One other mistake I see is it takes to long for the blocks to disapear, which makes it a bit hard. The 'endless' mode to me is way to tedious for me. I think this mode is a dissapointment to me. I really enjoy the puzzly mode though.
