Staffing News
Posted by Chris on 10 May 1999, 21:06 GMT

Phil Genera, also known as "ldspartan" on IRC, has joined ticalc.org staff to work primarily on file archives. He's been working behind-the-scenes for the past few weeks, and we're very happy to have him involved. Kirk Meyer, our previous backup file archiver, will no longer be doing file archives now that we have Phil on board.

Ahmed El-Helw, who has been working with us on our Upcoming Programs and Buy & Sell sections, is voluntarily retiring from our staff due to a busy schedule and a desire to devote more of his time to programming. We'd like to thank Ahmed for his commitment and wish him good luck in the future.

In addition, we are looking for at least one more volunteer archiver. Please read the following list of criteria carefully before contacting us.

  • The archiver's duties are to test (where possible) and post new files submitted to ticalc.org, to periodically monitor programmers' web sites for new programs to add, to handle email sent to filearchive@ticalc.org, and to nominate programs for the Program of the Month award.
  • Potential archivers should have about an hour of free online time each day at minimum (more free time is a plus).
  • Familiarity with existing programs and shells is highly suggested.
  • Owning multiple calculators is a plus.
  • Being able to cooperate and work well with others is a necessity!

If you'd like to offer your help, please email us at newstaff@ticalc.org with the following information:

  • Your name, handle (if applicable), and age
  • The amount of time each day, on average, you expect to be able to spend
  • Which TI graphing calculator model(s) you own
  • An overview of any programming experience you have (computers or calculators)
  • Any other relevant information you think we should know

Thanks in advance to anyone interested in helping out. We will do our best to move ahead as quickly as possible, but please be patient if you don't hear back from us immediately.

Re: Staffing News
Nihilist9

will this result in better archiving like more screenshots, description, voting, comments, etc.?
(not that it isn't good now) but I just want to say great site!

It mainly means that, since one person is devoted almost solely to file archiving, that your files will get into the archives faster, and that the quality will hopefully improve. As for screenshots, there will be a lot more of those added. Until recently, 89/92/92+ were the only ones w/ screenshots - now I know that there are some ZShell screenshots available.

Also, we have some plans for the future of screen shots that will definitely make them a unique viewing experience - stay tuned ;)

Well whatever it is I must say it's about time!!! Most every other large ti-site has screen shots now, and i think it's about time you did to!

Oh, you mean those animated screenshots? That's really nothing that new. They look pretty nice, but the problem is that the animations stop and don't loop for eternality.

You can view a few samples, just click on my web page link.

As for the animation, I can help, their are two reasons the animations stop. The main because someone clicked on a link that opens a new window or does nothing.

Other wise they stop cause who ever made them said not to loop it.

If you want to know how to loop it e-mail me, I can help.

Bryan - yes it is new. Just because you COPIED WITHOUT PERMISSION the animated screenshots page doesn't mean that you can some how lead people to believe that _you_ came up with this idea instead of us. You say that they don't loop - if you made these screenshots, then surely you must know how to make them loop?? Of course not, you haven't written any such programs.

The real animated screenshot page can be reached at the link above, for all who are interested. Since it has been brought into the open, would people please email me their opinions on what screen shots are best (yes, we had already decided internally that the screen shots would loop).

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Staffing News

You didn't come up with the idea either. Animated GIFs have been around for years. Please stop your whining.

And what is all this about deciding things "internally"? It's almost like you are trying to describe the staff here as democratic.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Staffing News
ticalc_chris

Bryan, if you continue posting comments that are obvious jabs at ticalc.org and its staff, we will delete them, since they are not constructive or relevant.

Moreover, I don't think anyone can accept your opinion as unbiased as it relates to this site. It also goes without saying that you are in no position to make judgments on our staff affairs, having not been a part of them for the past 2 months.

If anyone ISN'T tired of Bryan's crusade to nitpick our staff and our site for his own personal reasons, please speak up. I think most of us have heard enough, and we can do without the distraction.

If you need to continue this discussion, do so in private email, or any further off-topic flames will be deleted.

I am not tired of his rants, and I do not think that his comments should be deleted. This only makes the ticalc have a bad image.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Staffing News
Fil

Well, this definately shows how selfish the staff at ticalc.org is getting now that Bryan is gone. He stated factual information about the animated images, and you had no right to hash back at him simply becuase you don't like him. I even had the idea a couple of months a go to put screenshots together into an animated image, so stop giving yourself credit.

As for censoring out any Bryan-related comments, that only shows how ignorant you and your fellow staff members are. Comments regarding Bryan and his "dismissal" are perfectly relevant to the TI community, and I couldn't find a better place to discuss them. If you want to have the additude of "...we don't like the way you think, because it isn't the way we think. We're going to boot your comments off of OUR message board..." that's your own problem. But please, if you're going to hold public message boards such as this one, do not refrain people from discussing perfecly relevant topics, just because you don't like them.

Actually, I've had animated screenshots on my site since March. They're used for the documentation of WinCalc. Also, anyone who says GIFs cannot loop should look at the "GIF Construction Kit" by Next Wave/Alchemy Mindworks Software.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Staffing News
ticalc_chris

Bryan, Fil: Nowhere did I say that comments will be deleted because (a) Bryan posted them or (b) we don't agree with them. I did say, however, that if Bryan's or anyone else's comments disobey our guidelines, they will be removed, whether we agree with them or not. I just removed a comment of Kirk's for bending the guidelines. This applies to everyone.

Kirk has good reason to be upset at Bryan, who copied Kirk's web page with animated screenshots and posted them at a new address without giving him credit. But this isn't the place to discuss that.

"Relevant" does not mean "having something remotely to do with TI graphing calculators or people who use them." Relevant, as far as our guidelines are concerned, means being on-topic with respect to THIS news item. That's why there are separate comments for each news item.

If you have anything constructive and intelligent to say about Phil's joining our staff, Ahmed's leaving, or our call for new file archive staff, post it. But we will not allow every news item to turn into a forum for endless debate about Bryan Rabeler. If others are interested in continuing a discussion about the situation, they're free to set up their own mailing lists or message boards. But after 2 months, it's time to move on, and comments on the subject will be considered clearly off-topic and will be treated accordingly.

Bryan, just_ONCE_I'd like to come to Ti-Calc and read the newspost without having to sort through the irrelevant (IMO) complaints you and your supporters post. Obviously you don't owe me that, but it'd be nice anyway...

In your own way, you take a little shot here and a little shot there, continually pecking at the heels of Ti-Calc. I don't know why you don't just tell yourself 'screw them' and forget about it. Why keep coming back here, when you could just take your talents elsewhere? If it's simply for the attention, so nobody forgets you, start something big of your own to attract people!

Re: Arrrgghhh!
Paul

This is never going to happen unless ticalc (kirk and chris) stop replying to his every post. If they would just ignore him or address him in private, then these constant debates would eventually cease. Look at all of the old threads, this is what always happens. Had kirk not gone off after Bryans post (which might I add essentually verified the upcoming changes), then this entire string of replies never would have existed. If the ticalc staff would learn to ignore Bryan eventually things would calm down, but until then things will remain much the same. If ticalc is confident of there earlier decisions, there trully is no need to address Bryan's complaints everytime. Both are at fault for this IMO.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Staffing News
Fil

Simply because his "intellegent" contributions are a part of it. His discussion of the Bryan Incident are completely relevant, simply because he is in charge of the message boards. Our comments are completely irrelevant, simply because they aren't "on topic".

And I see no reason why anything related to the Bryan Incident is not relevant. As your guidelines say: "Constructive and relevant comments only; no flames. Especially no posts relating to website competition." The comments regarding Bryan are very constructive, and far from simply about "someone who is familiar with TI calcs."

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Staffing News
ticalc_chris

When he posted his first comment (which didn't attribute the screenshots to Kirk), Bryan's copy of the page was just a mirror of Kirk's and didn't have a name on it.

Bryan has since modified the page to give credit to Kirk for constructing the screenshots.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Staffing News
***READ THIS***

This is what you are making this fuss over:

"Oh, you mean those animated screenshots? That's really nothing that new. They look pretty nice, but the problem is that the animations stop and don't loop for eternality.

You can view a few samples, just click on my web page link."

That's it. Everything after that is your fault for replying. Re-read the first line: "Oh, you mean those animated screenshots?" Never in that message did he say that he made them, nor was it a jab at ticalc.org _or_ its staff. "those" was referring to your screenshots, and he provided a link so that people would know what he was talking about. He was just commenting about what you said about the screenshots, so it _was_ on topic, and therefore was not disobeying your guidelines. And, he did give you credit on the web page that has them, which he wouldn't have done if he was "trying to claim them as his". He didn't at first because he didn't know that it would bother you this much? Or maybe he forgot? So shoot him. Face it, you overreacted. His message was on topic. Yours weren’t, as they were a direct attack on him. Stop whining about it. Admit it. You wouldn't have gotten this mad if *anyone* else had posted that message, so just drop it. It isn't worth it.

Chris, Chris, Chris...won't you ever learn to keep your foot in your mouth. Everytime Bryan posts a comment, you respond. Don't you realize you are giving Bryan the attention he wants and digging yourselves further into a hole. And this talk of censorship. Come on!!! This just adds fire to the anti-ticalc movement. We are dealing with calculators here. Take a step back and look at the big picture. Let Bryan post. I didn't think his post was off topic, it was related to the file archives. Kirk was the one offtopic. Bryan you are doing an effective job of making the staff look bad IMO, of course it is not hard with Kirk and Chris constantly shooting themselves in the foot. Remember ... Calculators ... in the end is this all really worth it?

ok, im sick and tired of hearing bryans cryign personally. its been 2 months. you were fired, stop the crying. you know you put up the stupid gifs, trying to ruin them from making a big new announcement that the site changed, and i beleive kirk, that you didn't take those screen shots. you jsut wanted to screw ticalc before they had a chance to release it all nice and new. just get over ticalc.org. im thinking maybe if you quit your bitching, and gave them time to realize your better than who they got, if you are, then talk to them civalized in a while, maybe they will be more apt to take you back. but i personally am sick and tired of your incecent ranting and raving saying crap about ticalc.org in the message board, and in the ti-asm lists. get over it. your not the first person in the world who was fired. yeah i feel bad, you liked to do it, but its done.

You are obvoiusly very uninformed about the situation with Bryan Rabeler. Yes, he does like to pick out the problems with ticalc.org and make a big deal out of them. He isn't going back to ticalc.org though. He's made it public that he is starting his own site but he hasn't released many other details. Anyone who regularly goes on EFNet and is a regular in the calculator channels is more informed. I would assume that is why you are so uninformed and don't know the situaton. Don't post without the information.

the "Bryan Incident"? the "anti-ticalc movement"? Some people are getting way too much into this... I didn't know that the "Bryan Incident" was a national disaster...at least not in my world. Why don't you go march in Washington with posters like "down with ticalc!" That would be an "anti-ticalc movement."

I am not tired of hearing the truth from Bryan, nor am I tired of hearing Bryan's opinions. I believe Kirk Meyer flamed him first. Bryan has every right to nitpick the ticalc.org staff and I believe your comment was an attempt to silence the truth about your organization that you don't want told. Does the truth bother ticalc.org?

Exactly. In my opinion Kirk flamed him first. I think Kirk needs to grow up and take it up with Bryan privately, instead of bringing his gripes offtopic to the message board.

You Know, Why don't someone just get the site name in the URL above and put a big message board in it, That way, Bryan and Ticalc.org can flame their heads off and keep it out of the news comment boards. It could also be interactive, With a voting booth on the incident, a chat room with war utils already built in and much more.

Uh o! Hmmm, i'm looking at the calc descriptions and i see pictures of them..the same ones i am seeing on TI's site..does that mean that you too copied TI's shots of the calc's without their permission?!
BTW, you oviously don't know what makes an animated GIF loop if you say that the originals do when they don't -- after all, why would you d/l an GIF to turn off loop and then repost it?

One more thing, the hole staff issue is perfectly relevant, don't have message boards unless you are ready to take some critisism...

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Staffing News

Kirk, would you please quit whining. He has screen shots on his site, big deal. Ticalc continues to go on about Rabler, how they are moving on, but yet you keep responding to his posts. You just can't ignore him can you (Chris and Kirk mainly)? Perhaps this is because you are trying to justify what you did to him. Perhaps not, but anyways, your repeated responses to Bryan's posts do little to back your points and makes ticalc look all the more foolish...you are giving Bryan exactly what he wants.

I will whine all I want when someone else takes something that is mine - that is one of the main functions of government, to uphold personal property and copy rights. It tooks me many days to create the animated screenshot program. I'm not just going to watch as someone else posts them and tries to claim them as theirs. At first, Bryan just copied the screen shots. But now he has modified the web page to say that I created them, and so now I have no problem with it.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Staffing News

Yes, but my point is, discuss this with him in person. Had you not even posted that reply to him, I would never have even went to his site. Your reaction had the effect of varifying what the upcoming changes most likely will be. Please follow your own (Chris's) advice and don't bring your own personal battles with Bryan to the board, it only further increases the tension. It was you Kirk who went offtopic, and look at the posts that spawned from your reply. Discuss it with him in private, otherwise you will only do well to continue stirring the pot.

Well excuse me, but I'd like to say quite a few things here. First of all, animated screenshots for ti-games are NOTHING new, in fact, you can visit my really old site at http://come.to/adbTI and see that I at least have had them for quite a while. Also, my new page does too - http://come.to/tiasm. Please realize that this has been around for some time, and it is nothing new, and the idea itself belongs to NO ONE.

I don't know why, but things like this get me mad. It seems as though things aren't noticed in the "ti-community" until one of the "biggy" sites brings it up. Please realize that I and many others I am sure have already come up with this idea and put it to use.

Thank You.

What on earth does this have to do with ANYTHING? It's totally offtopic and it's a shameless advertisement for your site. They were talking about ANIMATED screenshots, and not even that they'd like to see them - they were arguing about how it wasn't fair for Bryan to post them. Why do you need to advertise for your site when it is totally inappropriate?
