File archives hit 6,000 files
Posted on 2 November 1998, 03:12 GMT

The file archives have now amassed over 6,000 files and 1,100 screenshots. We are still working getting screenshots made for all the files in the archive. This may require hiring some additional staff in the future, however that decision will be made at a later point in time. Count on us to always have the very latest programs and games!

Wow!! Good work! Heck, I can't even count that high!

Here''s a suggestion for the archive!!!
Rick

How about better descriptions other than the name of the file again! Like for updated programs, why was it upgraded, what was changed that sort of thing.

i think they can leave that to the readme included. i've been getting stuff from this site without ever knowing that there was a description thingie that u could click on.. you dont need it, just download it and find out for yourself

Why waste your time downloading the program just to read the readme file. just make better discriptions. It's not that difficult.

"Waste your time?" What, have you got a 9600 baud modem or something? I got a 56K and can d/l those little 10K zips in less than a second... buy a faster modem.

I have a 56k modem, but it is slow as heck(couldn't say the other word). It's a server thing too. Besides, Better descriptions would be better so you what you are downloading. While most programs are self explanitory (mario, pong, ect.), others may be harder to decypers, requiring you to download it first then doing whatever....oops, my 2 cents are up.... laters

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Here''s a suggestion for the archive!!!

i never read the descriptions before downloading, usually the title will tell you what it is.. if not, then it would take longer to load up the description page and read it than it would to just download the file in the first place

Whatever happended to those neat File_id.diz files that were used on BBSs? Couldn't ticalc implement something like that? By the way, how long can these threads get before the words won't fit on one line?

I'm running a 14.4, it's not so bad to have a 9600 after all.

screen shots are no problem for me... i can get ANY 82/3/5/6 SS, without any problem.

ah... the beauty of emulation... makes it easier to get asm ss's instead of using some cheesy ISR that saves the screen and then one must copy it to the pc/mac/whatever

People willing to help.
Nick M.

ticalc.org, would you consider actually letting other people do screen shots? It seems that there are many people willing to do some for all the other the calcs. Also, since many people could be working on them, a greater quantity of images would definately be produced. If you consider now that you have about 1100 or so screen shots and 6000 programs, much is being left out. And since multiple people would be willing to working on them, there would be less strain on having only one person or two produce the images. With more people that have more time on their hands to do such a task, better pictures would more than likely be produced. If uniformity is an issue to you, you could simply request that all submissions are of a certain size and color depth. You could also require that they be sent with a file explaining what program they are of, and what calc they are for. The original authors of the programs should get involved in this to. They made the program, why shouldnt they find appealing, or otherwise good-looking way to display their product? I propose the idea that the creation of screenshots be opened to all who wish to help. Why refuse the help that is offered? I also would like to see the authors of the programs create screenshots too. Doing something like this would greatly help to boost the look and effectiveness of this site by making it much easier to use.
-thanks. Nick

I agree. There seem to be lots of people willing to help, and ticalc.org should tap into this resource.

good idea!!!

Re: People willing to help.

Gathering screenshots of all of our files is certainly a priority. However, there are a couple of extremes. We decided against letting each author maintain screenshots for their own programs, since many authors don't even submit the latest versions of the programs, let alone pay enough attention to provide something like screenshots along with them. Since we do have specifications we want to keep for image dimensions and colors and file formats, we need to have dedicated person(s) who know the procedure and can do it right the first time. It would be too difficult to handle random submissions from generous visitors -- there's no stopping people from doing duplicate work, there's no guarantee the shots will be in the right format (even if we ask), and it would require too much time to check the validity of each screenshot.

We appreciate everybody's willingness to help, but we're still working out how we plan to take on the task and what it will require. We'll probably make some announcements about this in the coming weeks.

Re: Re: People willing to help.
Hey!

>since many authors don't even submit the latest >versions of the programs

What the f*ck is that supposed to mean? ticalc.org would not exist if not for it's program archives because people wouldn't bother coming here. The program archives wouldn't exist without people submiting their programs. Hell, there wouldn't even be calc games if not for the program authors.
If an author wants to make his program look good on ticalc.org by making screenshots and writing a decent description, then he should be able to do so.
The prog description pages suck and need serious help. Any help that can be given should be excepted. Nuff said.

You heard right. While we encourage and make it very easy for authors to submit their programs with their own descriptions and such, most of new files come from mailing lists, authors' web sites, and other sources (like the TI-Files! ;). You'll have to take my word for this one. We don't just sit back and let the files roll in, I'm afraid.

Speaking of New games. Someone might want to check Don Barne's(sp?) site http://mfti.home.ml.org For his new Mario game for the 92+ and other stuff;-)

Re: Re: Re: People willing to help.

sure they would exist, even if nobody submits their programs to _ticalc_, ticalc would still get them from other sites . . .

Re: Re: Re: Re: People willing to help.
Jason K.

I would submit my program (whenever I have time to finish the thing) directly to 'ticalc.org' for one, because I don't have a website of my own to put it on, and two, because I know this place is visited A LOT (no website rivalry please), _Although_ if it takes 'em as long to Post a program, as it does to reply to a mail (which hasn't happened yet), then I dont know what im going to do at the point when I shall submit my program... =P

YOU ARE ON CRACK if you think ti-files is better than this place. 1st: ticalc.org is much better organized, 2nd: it looks much better. 3rd as was mentioned in a previous comment, the server always works, in ym whole time coming here, there have been only 2 times that i havent been able to get here, whereas with those other guys (ti-files) i stopped going because i couldnt get to their site.

Re: Re: Re: Re: File archives hit 6,000 files

u keep mentioning ti-calc's better organization, but i like ti-files organization (a list of all files) better than ti-calc's (dividing up the files so u have to keep loading new pages)

and in the past year i have visited ti-files almost everyday and i have always gotten through

finally, the fact that i'm on crack is completely irrelavant
