Connect Your TI-83 to the Internet
Posted on 20 September 1998, 01:47 GMT

[Telnet 83 Screenshot]
Justin Karneges has released Telnet 83 v0.96 Beta for the TI-83. This program will allow you to connect to the Internet from your TI-83 and allow you to do IRC, e-mail, or browse the World Wide Web. You need a TI-Graph Link cable, an external 9600 modem, and a cellular phone or wall jack. Telnet 83 goes a step futher than FTerm, RTerm, and ZTerm by featuring an 80x25 scrolling "virtual" screen. This allows you to run programs for Linux such as Pine. For more information check out the Telnet 83 Home Page.

I think that this is a really good idea. Hey, somebody port it for Fargo or Fargo II. Anyways I understand how to hook it up, but I'm confused. It says that you can check your e-mail and something about the internet. Please explain this to me. Thanks. - Chris

Telnet83 is basically a terminal program. It was named telnet because my intent for the project was "internet access." What you do is dial into a unix shell account using the modem. Most unix shell accounts have a text based web browser, ftp, telnet, irc, and email programs. The TI-83 simply acts as a terminal.

For example:
410-494-1199
This phone number will connect you to Baltimore County's Public Library UNIX terminal. You can then get on the 'net using Sailor (an option on the startup menu).

PS: I'm not sure if Sailor works with Telnet 83

Creating Web Pages specially for TI calculators
Philip

When Palm-pilot knock offs starting running windows CE, they had to figure out a way to make the web fit on the small screen. So they made special web pages on the internet to fit the screen size. This can be done with TI calcs too. You could log onto the ticalc.org server or some special server, and view special web pages built for viewing on the ti screen. They could have sprites for graphics and the ability to download stuff right on your calculator. It is possible. Maybe you could make the telnet83 web site a host for special TI-calc web pages.

It boggles the mind what we can do with this calculators. Even though not everyone will use this option but this could lead into other things such as web browsing. (Dream on!! , probably, or?? dont know??) I just wanna say how about the 86.

Is is going one step to far I under stand how it works and have used it before but with a different program and have made a few test pages to veiw. It works!!! But it is just one step to far something that should of never been made. It is only good for the people who don't have a computer and use the calculator but how in the hell do they get the programs in the first place.

This comment is one persons veiw and most likly sevarl others but is not for the intent of everyone. Thankz

The best uses for this program is the same reason someone would own a palm pc. You can have internet access without a computer. I think the best place for people to use this would be at a high school. You could be on irc during class and your teacher would just think you are calculating. #physics might not be a bad place to hang out during the next test. Yes, the cellular phone bill would be insane, but you'd still be the envy of other classmates. =)

I would love to use this on my TI-82, but I can't seem to find any documentation on how to port programs from 83 to 82. My previous attempts to port it have been in vain. Can someone who has had success in doing this e-mail it to me or submit it to the file archives? Many thanks,
Alan

Cool! Now somebody port it to the -92.
Rob Hornick

This has got to be ported to the TI-92! It has a QWERTY keyboard and a larger screen, making things all the more easy. Also -
1. is there any way to connect it through an internal modem?
2. how exactly are you checking e-mail and chatting?

BIOSERRORS

Porting anything to the TI-92 from TI-8x (excluding 89, of course) is near impossible. Other than machine language, Assembly language is the LEAST portable language there is. It's highly unlikely that *anything* will be ported between TI-8x and TI-92

However, isn't there a terminal program already for the 92? I thought that was what FTerm was for, except for direct link for 92<->92 communication? If anyone has made this work, please let me know... my boss has mad a modem work off of a wyse 50 dumb terminal, and it would be cool if I could work one off of my 92!

Seriously rad. Does anyone know how to do this using a digital radio communications system (ax.25 or some other form of packet)? Cells would probably still be too pricey to use with slow modems(Y/N?).

Re: Connect Your TI-83 to the Internet
The Clarifier

Ok.. from what ive seen posted, it seems like a few of you need a clarification on what this does. Too many of you, it seems, are new to the net and have only heard of ppp/windows type connections that are the most popular. But, all this is done with a dial-in unix account available from some isps. These used to be all you could get, but now they have become pretty rare, or at least in my area. Now, i hate to bust a bunch of bubbles, but if you use AOL, MSN, or Prodigy, i am sure that this is if no use to you, unless you have a friend with a unix shell account like i mentioned above. If you use a locally run isp, give them a call to see if they have dial-in shells available. And for those of you who may be wondering if you can ever use your existing account that isnt a unix one with your calc, no, you cant. The PPP/Slip protocols are huge, and they require speed, much more speed than the 300bps that is available with this calculator thing.. So, just to re-state it.. dont get too excited about this unless you know you have a dial-in unix shell with your isp.

Hey, this is really cool. I can't wait to get my 86 connected. I just have one question... would be be possible to use an internal modem, or even better... a modem card, which theoretically could be fit inside the existing case... Think about it. :) It shouldn't be that hard, but then again, I know nothing about the differences between an external and internal modem. Thanks.

Re: Re: Connect Your TI-83 to the Internet
The Clarifier

Nope. Internal modems and modem cards rely on the computer for power, and the calculator isnt going to be able to put out the amount of power it needs from 4 AAA batteries :)

Well, since you'd need a way for the modem to plug into the cell phone of wall jack, you could might as well bypass the power imput normally ued by the card and connet it to an external battery pack or power cord. Very theoretical, but possible. Hey! We can check our e-mail with it, what else CAN'T we do!

Nah. Youd just fry the modem. Remember kids, Static Kills :)

uh... no.
There is a program called ti-modem
http://www.ticalc.org/pub/dos/link/ti92modm.zip

try that out. I got it to work just fine.
I don't have an 83, I just have a 92 and 85, and the 92 worked just fine.

First of all what a great I idea. It is great ideas like these that made Linux a reality. I saw the Ti-85 was not mentioned, so can telnet83 be ported to the TI-85? I see the term.83g is only about 3K.
