3D Game in Development
Posted on 10 September 1998, 03:51 GMT

Adamman is developing a 3D game for the TI-82 called "3D Game" and is looking for a good name for it. The game will feature:

  • Grayscale graphics
  • Non-orthogonal walls (not at 90 degrees of each other)
  • "Constant-Z" texture mapping
Adamman has no plans for porting it to other calculators, however if someone wants to port it after the TI-82 version is released, send him an e-mail. A small demo should be released soon. For more information check out the 3D Game Home Page.

I wonder if they're making an engine for it.
P.S. my website has nothing to do about TI calcs

Why not for the 82? Do you have something against 82's? I have an 82 and a 92. I know Z80 and I don't know 68K.

Let me guess, you're an 86 user? Just wondering.

Yes, I am an 86 user. I just thought that the 82 had less memory and stuff doesn't it? I have never used or seen an 82 in action. I thought that more ppl had 85,86es don't they? It sounds like a killer game and I hope there will be a port so more people can use it. Maybe to ZShell or Useguard or something so it can be emulated with ASE, Rascall or something while being available to 85 users also. I hope I didn't offend any people I was just curious! Thanx!

What about 89s? no one ever makes any cool 3d games for the 89. 82s are cool and all but I think that you should expand a little. Cover a few more calcs.

What kind of greyscale routines did you have in mind? The ones I've seen have all been seriously slow, but if u have some speedy code, couldn't you share it with the rest of the ti82-comunity?

It's not super fast, but it works, and it looks good. I was planning on releasing it with Dr. Mario, but that project fell through. Now it will be released with 3D Game.

Jwaz

Why is it that so many 85/86 owners consider the 82/83 to be so inferior? All of these calcs run with a z80, so the internal speed is the same. When it comes to any particular game, the only real drawback (when programming in ASM) is the relatively slow speed and size of the display. In reality ASM games will run just as well on the 82 as on the 86 (NOT 1/10th the quality, as has been suggested).

Sorry if this sounds like a flame, but the 86 community is for the most part the most egotistical group of people I've ever witnessed. Not all 86'ers, you understand, but a lot of the posts I've seen here are 86 users saying "When will it be ported to the 86", "It will be MUCH better on the 86". How do you justify this?
This has been building up inside me and I HAD to let it out!

I agrre with you. I'm an 86 user but also have an 83. Me and a kid in my class(he has a 82) swap calc's for a while sometimes to play the game for the different one's and I'd have to say some of the 82 games are as good if not better than games on the 86 of the same type. They not all be assembly but there still fun.

Dont start flaming me!!!
Leon Pierre
(Web Page)

Before you started sending flames, you should know that I have access to every linkable TI calc (except the 73 and the 89) and that I know how each of them performs. The 86 version is most likely to be better due to the higher RAM and larger screen size and better optimized code. Not because the 86 is the coolest, but because the programmers can work more freely. I know most of the specs for all of the calcs, and I know what each one can and cannot do. Think about this next time before you start flaming the great Leon!

     11 September 1998, 04:15 GMT

Re: Dont start flaming me!!!
Evil

I don't see how RAM effects how good a game is. There hasn't been a game that requires more than 25K(except on the 92). And where does your better optimized code argument come from! Code comes from the programmer not the calculator. If any shell offered the best optimization methods, I think it would be Usgard 85, which has tons of built-in functions. Besides, do you really expect Adamman to go out and buy and 86 just so you can play it? 86 gamers can wait for Maze 3d.

Re: Re: Dont start flaming me!!!
who cares

all 85s and 86s suck and MOST of the people who own them think everything sshould be for thoes calcs annd none other i have an 83 and i love the 82 games (i wish i could run them like an ase for the 83) i wanted to know when can it be ported to the 83

btw leon you suck more than most

p.s. this is not a flame i was telling my personal thoughts

Re: Dont start flaming me!!!
Jwaz

Man, you're just begging to be flamed. Do you know what you are talking about? Have you ever actually coded in ASM? How can you claim that code on an 86 can be further optimized than on an 82? All the commands are _exactly_ the same, its still just a z80.

     11 September 1998, 15:03 GMT

Re: Re: Dont start flaming me!!!
bla bla bla

hey people i just have to let this out, none of the z80 calculators are better than each other in terms of hardware, man i programmed a game on the 82 then ported it to the 86, and it worked much faster on the 82, i dont know why, but i also hate those people that say one calc will run faster thananother while they both have the same processor, so shutup! yeah

     12 September 1998, 04:04 GMT

Better optimized?
Jason VanFickell

What makes you think that 86 games are better optimized? The 82 version of Ztetris is smaller than any of the other current versions.

Re: Better optimized?
Sam Heald

Hehe, by a 600-200 hundred bytes depending on which 82 version and which 85/86 version you're comparing. I'm sure Mardell could get it even lower if he tried.

OK Children, stop fighting. *LOL*
I am a faithful 82 user, and I have found a renowned interest in my 85 (which i still dislike the interface of) and I think that the 82 is better.
More power to Adamman!
I don't use assembly much, and most of my programming comes in BASIC, but I'll be the first to tell you that the 82 is just as widely used as the 85/86 and demands just as many kickass games as the blackbacks (85's and 86's).
I hope that we all can grow up a bit, and stop flaming each other.
When my graphlink arrives, I shall try out your 3d game, adamman, and, what would be really cool is something like Quake. :) Especially with deathmatch ability.

Please, guys and gals, stop dissing each other's calcs and focus on the topic at hand: This 3d game will kick major butt, and who knows- maybe someone else WILL port it to teh 85. :)

Re: Re: 3D Game in Development
a peeved person

>I cant wait for an 86 version...<

This type of thing gets on my nerves when reading comments. I've seen it in almost every news thing that says a new game is coming out for a calculator.

Why can't you (or anybody who posts things like that) wait until the first version is finished before asking for it to be ported? Who knows, he may not want it ported to other calculators!

Re: Re: 3D Game in Development
Some Jerk

I had an 82 for several years before I bought an 86 simply because the math features are better. I have played games on both calculators, and in my opinion, the only advantage the 86 has over the 82 in terms of gaming is the screen size difference. However, as the 86 is the calculator I use now, I'd like to see an 86 version. Good luck with the game!
