TI-89 Starts Shipping
Posted on 19 August 1998, 17:35 GMT

Texas Instruments began shipping TI-89 units to dealers late last week, and they are expected to hit the shelves sometime next week. They will be available in the U.S. with distribution limited to one major retail outlet. Wider distribution will follow a month later. The TI-89 will also be available in France this month, but we have no information about other countries just yet.

TI-89 in Canada???
Yannai

Has anybody had any luck finding out if the TI-89 is available in Canada, or when it will be available. I am in Calgary, and would like to learn how to use the 89 before school starts.

Just bought a TI-89 from Calculators, Inc.
The company is run out of a couples home here in the Twin Cities. It was $133, it's a really nice calculator with great features. No other place we called had them but this place.

I ordered mine Next day Fedex too. Staples told me the book price was $149, it came out to $155 with next day from calculatorsinc.com, and they actually had them.

Just got it
Blue Raven

UPS just dropped off the TI-89. It was well worth it. Since I never used a 92 before I can't compare it. I have used a 82, 83, 85, and 86 though. The screen is not that bad as people have been saying, it is very easy to read. The menu system is great, and the addition of a text editor is fansastic for keeping notes. According to the book it says it can exhange programs with a 92 plus and 92. So I am going to try to see if I can get any programs to work on it. The 3D graphing is fansastic. Overall well worth the money I paid and it will come in very handy. If you are looking for one, go to www.calculatorsinc.com and give them a call, it is $133 there. Ordered mine yesterday.

I just got mine as well. As a recent new user to TI (from HP land) I own an 86, and now this fantastic TI-89. Like the system fonts on it as well as everything else you said about this unit. I dont know if I should keep my 86 for any reason though...any ideas?

by the way I paid $133 (no tax) and $22 for overnight morning delivery shipping.

So going to calculators.com, I can get a TI89 for about $130 (total price, no shipping and handling), or is there an extra charge?
Also, how much do you thing that the updates of the net will cost each time you want to upgrade the TI89?

Just wait a while after the update comes out and you'll probably be able to get it for free off of a warez site or from a friend.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you download the guide book from TI's web site in acrobat format?

Re: Re: Re: Re: TI-89 Starts Shipping
JR.

I have been there & tried to do just that but they do not have the Ti-85 guide book any more (I never new they had it when they did) they took it off and replaced it with ti ti-86 guide book which is apparently quite similiar to the ti-85 but it also has many functions and features that are not availiable to the ti-85 so it would just mix me up quite a bit.

Thanks for the effort anyways, :)

I can not wait for the TI-89 also, but if you want the guidebook for the TI-85 just download it from the TI website. You will need Adobe reader but you can get that from them also. Hope this helps.

Look, there is no TI-85 handbook on the ti web site. There evidently according to the little astericks(whatever) is a format problem so they didn't publish an electronics version of it.

In my area (chicago) service merchandise, OfficeMax, and Office Depot are all basically guaranteed to get the 89 in stock first.

If you were smart, you would have seen that the FAQ of the TI-89 page says exactly when and where it would be released. So much for research on your part. Better luck next time...hehe

Sorry, when I went there this morning it still said "some time in September". I guess they just updated it, or I didn't reload or something =P

Re: Re: Re: TI-89 Starts Shipping
wait a sec

I keep checking up on it and at http://www.ti.com/calc/docs/faq/89faq010.htm
and all it says is some time in september. If this is the wrong URL what is the right one please.

My browser says, at that url,"The TI-89 is expected to be available in the U.S. beginning the last week of August, 1998. Availability will be limited to Staples, The Office Superstore, as well as some Instructional Dealers and college bookstores. Other outlets will begin to carry the TI-89 about one month later." It will be at stores next week, but the article says that they were shipped last week. Meaning that during those two weeks, they will be in the back room of the Staples store, and they will sell them next week. Any questions?

I have a Staples near me too. Q: Should I wait a bit before buying a TI-89? Let them update some stuff on it, or should I just go out and buy it?

Go ahead & get one!
they have some type of thing on it I hear that lets you download the updates off the internet & load them on to your calc instead of buying a new one to get the latest ROM. :)

id wait a few weeks before buying it, the price will go down.

Normally the price won't go down any untill next summer when Staples will have their next back-to-school sale, plus because the calc is BRAND new, it'll probably have the same price no matter where you go to buy it. One last thing, the ti-89 features a FLASH-upgradable ROM Chip, allowing you to electronically upgrade the ROM, however this is NON-Volatile memory, meaning if you screw up the calc while transfering, taking out the batteries and pressing [ON] won't do any good. I Think.

no, got it backwards. NON-volatile means it WILL be remembered even if you take out the batteries.
(Flash takes little power to write and none to read)

mail order might be cheaper
Tim

When I got my 92, the list price was $250 and I got it for $170 by ordering it from a direct mail place. Might want to check that out. TI has a list of dealers on its site. I don't know when they will start selling 89s, but its worth a check.

Yeah, lucky for you. Has anyone else noticed that Staples also sells TI-Calcs for the most expensive prices? The one near me is still selling the 86 for $120!!! I am excited, but I might wait and buy it cheaper.
