TI-89 Nears Release
Posted on 8 August 1998, 05:17 GMT

[TI-89 Picture] It had been reported earlier that the TI-89 would be released sometime in October 1998. Texas Instruments has just announced in their FAQ that the release period is now September 1998. The TI-89 is expected to cost about $150 in the U.S. As the period of release is only one month away, many TI enthusiasts are expressing excitement as TI is about to release their most powerful calculator yet in a handheld form.

Texas Instruments has released a new picture of the TI-89. The pictures of all the calculators in the Calculators section have been updated.

Stay tuned to ticalc.org for the latest updates on the release of the TI-89. A TI-89 assembly mailing list will be created soon after the official release.

The TI-89 has the same processor as the TI-92 and TI-92 Plus - MC68000 10MHz.

Hey, this is going to be so smooth!!! Im glad they moved up the release of it... I cant tell very well from that picture, but does it have any Function keys like the 92 has?

Yes, it will have the five function keys at the top, and if you press [2nd] then [f1], [f2], or [f3] you will get [f6], [f7], or [f8] respectively. For a larger picture of the TI-89, you can go to http://www.ti.com/calc/docs/89big.htm

Yeah, it seems pretty cool. I hope the LCD has a higher refresh rate, that means less blurry side-scrolling grayscale games. Which, of course, I'll probably be working on once it comes out. It has a lot of potential and also is cool because now games that come out for the 89 will be ported for Fargo II on the 92+ more often.

I believe the TI-89 is going to have the same type of LCD as the other TI-8X's (Like the TI-86). I agree that the TI-92 LCD is pretty bad, which is one of the reasons I think the TI-89 will be better. However, it is impossible to tell for sure how the TI-89 LCD will be.

The TI-86's screen is 128x64 while the TI-89's is 160x100, and I think they are the same size (inches wise), so the TI-89's screen will look nicer since it has a higher resolution.

False : the ti89 is larger as ti86 and ti83, she is more 'plain'. But anyway, the LCD must be better because the contrast is same as 86&83 and not as 92.
And a smaller screen mean a faster refresh.
(sorry for bad english)

The TI-89 is the same size as the TI-83/86:

1.0 x 3.5 x 7.3 (in.)

So the LCD on the 89 can not be very much larger than the 83/86 because there is just no more room.

If you notice on the 86 & 83 there are thick borders on the LCD. Unlike the 89 which has a thin border around the LCD.

The 89 features a higher resolution screen(much like the Ti-92)
I believe that the resolution is 160x100, which is almost double of the Ti-82 or Ti-83. Couple that with the fact that the screen is the same size, only with better resolution... and i would certainly say that the 89 is going to have a Fantastic display controller

Go to www.ti.com/calc/docs/faq/89faq014.htm. If that doesn't convince you then nothing will :P It is possible that the LCD may be bigger on the TI-89, but TI hasn't said anything about that. We know it has higher resolution than the others, but TI says it is the same size (overall).

Mr. Rabeler:

Thank you for your recent e-mail.

The screen of the TI-89 is exactly the same size as the TI-83 and the TI-86. The TI-89 is being designed on the same platform as these calculators.

YEAAAH!... COOL!....
Once again TI have proved they are the best on the calculator market!!!... Will TI release it in september all over the world or just in the US?...
WOAAOOOH! I CAN'T WAIT GIMMIE ONE!

Although nothing (to my knowledge) has been said about shipping outside the US, I'm guessing that it will take a while to get to other countries. Most other calculators were released in other parts of the world 1 or 2 months after it was released in the USA.

TI has tons of projects. Most aren't calcs. It took them around a year just to say thet were going to release the new calculators in six months. (I think).

My guess would be TI may come out with Flash ROM versions of the TI-83 and TI-86 in the future to replace them. They would probably be called the TI-84 and TI-87. Who knows. :)

Programming on the TI-89
moogled

Just a few questions... How will assembly programming on the TI-89 differ from the assembly programming on the TI-83/86? Also, at a fairly high price of $150.00, can we expect many great programmers (such as harper, bill, etc) to just go out and buy it, only to "re-learn" many asm things that they may know from other calculators? The TI-89 will be great, but there may be a lack of experienced programmers to deliver us great programs, games, and now applications. Give your feedback please.

Re: Programming on the TI-89

The TI-83/86 are Z80 calcs while the TI-89 (and TI-9x series) are 68K calcs. So there is a big programming difference. Programs can't simply be ported to the TI-89 from the TI-83/86, they must be reprogrammed from scratch.

Re: Programming on the TI-89
Th.FERNIQUE

The ti89's programs will be similare to the ti92's.
Thanx to think that programmers for 68k don't exist or are too bad for release great game ! Yes ! Somebody else program for ti92 like J.Mårdell...

Re: Re: Programming on the TI-89

Jimmy Mardell is an excellent programmer all around, not just 68k (TI-92). He wrote some great games for the Z80 (TI-85 & TI-86) like Sqrxz and ZTetris. Let's hope more programmers follow in his foot-steps.

Re: Programming on the TI-89
BearSoft

Since I'm a bigger fan of the MC68k series rather than Z80, I can say that it's far easier programming a 68k. If you're a Z80 programmer, I'm sure that you hate the lack of functions. The Z80 has 256 * 2 ops, while the 68k has 64k. I must say that the asm-codes will be easier to understand. The 68k also has 32-bit adressing. FORGET MEM-PAGING! Just wanted to say that there will be a huge numbers of Game-Boy ports since the screen in 160x100, GB = 160x160.

Re: Re: Programming on the TI-89
Lorccan

although the 68k is a much more powerful processor, i find the assembly programming very confusing because it is so different from what i am used to(z80, 80x86, 808x). the 32-bit addressing and (relatively) high screen resolution should result in some interesting games for it, though. there will probably be many ports of fargo programs for it too. i just wonder when ti will release asm info for it (and for the 92+) so we can start writing these programs.

Re: Programming on the TI-89

I don't know about that. The TI-92 runs, on average everywhere I have seen it, $200.00. Yet there are still people out there programming for it. You make the call.
