Attention span: 10/10 Graphics caught my eye. Controls: 9/10 A little slow, faster w/powerup. Implementation: 7/10 It's waaaaay to big!!! Overall: 10/10 Competition for BigDyna.
After the 2 minutes it took to upload to my calculator, I was pleasantly surprised. Don't get me wrong, but the game is by far the biggest thing out there other than Street Fighter (which, by the way, they need to fix for ROM 2.03). I mean it. The 5 files the game requires cannot be archived and they are all huge. Total space requirements add up to almost 110 kb!!! This would only be rediculous if the game sucked, which it doesn't.
The game itself blew me away. The graphics are a tiny bit slower than most games, but it's easy to see why. Every single detail in the game stands out. The game image itself jumps off the screen in an almost 3D fasion. Gameplay itself is great as there are many powerups, enemies, and levels. It even features save game and high scores. This is a truly great bomberman clone.
Well, it seems as if the BigDyna vs BomberBoy battle has come to a steep precipice. The only question is, who's going to fall in. BomberBoy is good, because of it's massive graphics at the cost of A LOT of memory. BigDyna is an all around good game with decent graphics and requires a little bit of space at the cost of minor details such as save game and high scores. |

Attention span: 7/10 It will crash after a while. Controls: 9/10 Just a tad slow, but still great. Implementation: 2/10 Too big, too buggy. Overall: 6/10 Wait for less crash-prone version.
Nice graphics, good gameplay, where can BomberBoy 1.0 go wrong? I'll tell you where. That "1.0" beside it's name...
First off, the graphics are great; they're equal to BigDyna's qualities. The whole setup is professional, with a nice looking title screen, high score, option menu, and many details to the character/enemies/levels/powerups.
The gameplay is nice as well. While the main character moves a little slower than he should, he can still duck out of harms way, which is good enough to make the rest of the gameplay very nice. I never did find any power ups when I played it (more on that later). The game might be huge, but the fact that it has 5 levels and 5 enemies (with AI) kind of gives that reason. It also works on all rom versions currently released, and I've read some say they got it to work on hw2 calcs (I'm guessing without AMS rom version 2.03).
My problem with it? Yes, if you remembered I have a problem with that "1.0" up there. People should be able to expect a game at version 1.0 to not act like a version .1 game. While it probably took a LONG time to make this, and the programmer probably put his heart (and a few brain aneurysms) into this, he should have at least taken out some of the worst bugs in there. Sure, every program should expect SOME bugs, but this one has quite a few that take the cake. I archived BomberBoy and, when I unarchived it later, it told me I had the wrong version of the level libraries. After I tried running it 3 times in a row, it crashed my calculator. It just isn't stable enough to play many times.
While graphics and gameplay can make a game great, bugs like those usually make it take a few steps back from being a game you'd always have on your calculator. |
