I know someone who memorized 165 at lunch one day. How hard could it really be to get up to 251?

im with you, who the heck has enough time on their hands to memorize 251+ digits, and if they do have enough time who would want to. Just memorize 10 digits would drive me crazy.

I think that most of those people, but probably not all, are probably just trying to have some fun and to see how many people they can fool. I mean, I admit it.. I can only go out two, because that's all that is required for me in school. I've read about quite a few people that can go out about 100 or 200, but almost never more. I am also pretty sure that the numbers repeat after a certain point, because... never mind. If you want more, jusst e-m me at my handler + @aol.com

the numbers DO NOT repeate, ever. Pi is irrational, so there are no repeats.

But the greatest mathematic minds have only been able to calculate pi to the trillionth place (probably a lot more, though...) and humanity may still find that pi might repeat at a certain point... But I wouldn't hold my breath...

I believe that pi has been proven to be a transcendental number, and therefore an irrational number. If pi did repeat, then...

pi=3.141592653589793... xyz...xyz...xyz... where n digits repeat starting at digit m

10^m*pi=314159... .xyz...xyz...xyz...
10^(m+n)*pi=314159...xyz... .xyz...xyz...xyz...

pi = (314159...xyz... - 314159...) / (10^m)(10^n-1), which is rational

This leads to a contradiction.
Therefore, pi does not repeat.

(in a nutshell: pi is irrational, repeating decimals are rational, therefore pi does not repeat)

Just to be a nit-picker: you put

3.1415926535897932384626433832790

The last digit is a 5, not at 0.

I could memorize over 250 if I wasn't constantly distracted with... well, life. I memorized 50 digits about 6 years ago, and can now recall 85, though I haven't practiced or added any new numbers for several years.

Started with 50 and now he knows 85, without studying. Has his mind been using its idle computing time (like, when he's using the bathroom) to calculate those 35 extra digits?

(Yes yes, I know...he could have added 5 or 10 here and there...)

Me! strangely I can remember numbers that well but I'll forget someones name in 5 minutes. I think I might be good at learning how to program in binary (very hard). Wait I know why I see a sequence and it is always memorized (21 24) someone tell me what that is in hex, I know already.

In an algebra class at my school, you get a homework pass for every 15 digits of pi you can recite. Now they know pi to just about 251 places, or at least they are close.

Wait this is stupid, knowing pi has nothing to do with algebra has it ?

FYI, the world record is supposed to be 243 last time I checked, but it could be more now.
