This network would be dedicated to discussion calculators. A network is basically a bunch of servers connected together so people connected to any one server can talk to everybody on any of the servers.

Not just no, but heeeeell no. :-) To limit an IRC network to be dominated by calc gurus is an insane notion. I personally like being able to join #mp3 and get a file occassionally, or #mirchelp to help the mIRC kiddies or occassionally ask a bonehead question of my own. Basically, EFnet, DALnet, and Undernet have established themselves as useful, and any calc-only network would never survive against them.

I now realize that I wrote way too much on such a simple topic, but whatever. I believe I made my point. I'll stick to EFnet ... and Undernet.

In light of the possibility of a network cooperatively run by major sites in the TI community, I see possible unnecessary K-lines and G-lines coming all over the place. Maybe we play nice for the first few months. But when a bad apple appears, we're not just talking taking over a channel (the server could always be rigged to "help" someone's cause) ... well, I'm just saying we should think things out before getting into something we can't all control.

Blah, I'm babbling on and on about nothing in particular. You get my drift.

well. This is the first ive noticed of this poll. It probly came around because of my recent email to ticalc. I run Stratnet which is a IRC network that has 7 servers now. and a limited services setup. The services are there only for channel owners that wish to make absolutly sure there channel is protected. We are still testing out the services and are not sure if we plan to keep them or not. irc.ti-files.org, and irc.tinews.net both have a server setup and running on this network. I dont expect this irc network to be TI calc related only, but i think it would be nice for the ti community to put together and do somthing as a whole. well im done with my rant if anyone wants to email me a question please email me at nricciardi@mindspring.com thank you and have a nice day.

What's the point? A network just fo discussion of calculators wouldn't fulfill it's purpose because the calculator channels on IRC are usua;;y a place for off-topic discussion. Another potential problem is if two competing sites set up servers for the same topic, based on past experiences, it is doubtful that they will co-exist peacefully. Despite the maturity shown recently in the TI community, setting up such a network is just asking for trouble in my opinion. And is such a network necessary? Probably not. Will it be useful to the TI community in general? Probably not. Such a network wouldl probably be used mostly for off-topic discussion in which case, why not stick to EFNet? As for calculator discussion, there's always message boards, mailing lists, and these comment boards.

What's the point? EFnet kicks ass, plus it's nice to have #gbdev open, and other stuff with ease.

I also agree-
It would be much easier to stay on the EFnet - having a calculator-based network would require having connections to multiple servers - a major pain.

EFNet also requires an ident server, which my ISP lacks and is appearently too stubborn to provide.

FYI:
Most IRC servers require identd, but its not something that your ISP is supposed to provide. Your IRC client must provide this information, either enable this function or find a good IRC program that will support identd.

When you say "you" do you mean why does anyone use IRC or why does a specific person use it? Well regardless, IRC is a great way to get advice and help in any area of TI calcs. Live people give you one on one help with instant answers and good assistance (if the person isn't crabby). Anyways IRC seems worth it, but from some of the language and topic matter I have seen, I don't know if I would want to endure the crap to get the answers.

Personally, I think ticalc.org should set up a Hotline server, it could be organized alot better then IRC.

I definatly agree. Having a hotline server gives you great advertizing for the site, it'd be a unique place, and bandwidth shouldn't be too much of a concern considering most of the files are well below 50k. But as far as IRC goes, having a server would bring perks, but would it be as usefull, effective, and informative as a Hotline server?

I agree, a newsgroup would be the first gap to fill in the immediate. The mailling list is, IMHO, painfull to use, because I really don't like to receive all these messages in my mailbox. A newsgroup is very pratical because you can consult it when you want, and it doesn't bother you the rest of the time. Just have a look at the ti-fr forum frequentation, bearing in mind that it's only used by french peoples (hum, it's down right now but...) ! An internationnal forum or newsgroup would be really a great thing !!!
The best would be a web-based forum instead of a usenet one, since lot of peoples can't use usenet.

This was a bit off topic but I think it would be an interresting idea.
