*gasp*
1337=leet=elite
It's the special way of writing (13375p34k), replacing numbers (and sometimes symbols, depending on how crazy you are) for letters. It also typically involves misspelling a lot of words and a bunch of exclamation marks.
PH33R M3 F0R 1 \/\/1L| H4X0R J00 N00B W17H M13 1337 5K1LZ!!!!!!1111 J00 H4\/3 /\/0 <H4N$3 70 53RV1V3 M4K3 Y00R 713M!!!!!!!111oneoneeleven
I'm sure you've seen it before ;-)
As an adjective, though, 1337 is mostly used as a positive word to describe something related to hacking, nerds, computers, or anything just overall that's good. (i.e. "I am a 1337 h4x0r", "This program is 1337!", or "Linux is so 1337, it r0x0rz my b0x0rz!", etc.)
It's also quite frequently used in gaming.
Anyway, that was my 00000010b cents. That should clear everything up ;-)
